9. THIS CONVERGENCE BROUGHT NEW APPS AND
NEW POSSIBILITIES FOR JOURNALISTS
• Show the story, not just tell it
• More depth to stories possible, audio
and video

14. “ It was useful for quickly uploading breaking news
and sending it to the newsroom.
I could cut it on the phone and send 30
second clips immediately.

25. “ Dragon dictation was useful when I was
covering the Egypt elections in 2010.
I dictated my scripts and it converted
them to text. It saved me about an hour
in scripting. I could dictate whilst
watching the material we had shot on
my laptop.

30. “ I used the notes app in Japan. I would
type up my notes from the field and put
in my earphones to listen to interviews
that I’d recorded.
I emailed these notes to myself, edited
and filed to Doha.

image, that perfectly sums up the story or is just a
great picture...in seconds I can take out my iPhone
and tweet it, reaching TENS of thousands of
people instantly.
I no longer have to wait until the next
bulletin to report and share things with
our audience.

The new media team is responsible for defining and executing social, mobile, and internet media strategies across the various channels within the network. Today, I ’ m here to speak about the increasing role apps play in shaping what you see on the screen when you watch Al Jazeera live on aljazeera.com, on your TV at home or on our shiny new iPhone app.
We contracted a company Adactus to build a mobile reporter app to run on Symbian phones. The first time the new app was taken into the field was by an excited camerman Laith Mushtaq from AJA. He was going to Chad on a news story mission and went for a walk around just after checking into his hotel. Suddenly he heard an explosion and the following images and video is what was recorded using the only available equipment he had, an N82 loaded with a mobile reporter app.
Journalist had been using Nokia and BB ’ s in the field. Suddenly a new door was opened by the convergence of camera, voice, design, and 3G data networks. We started to see the mobile phone differently...
Journalists could see how it could become a core part of the newsroom. This opened new doors for journalists, but few were walking through this new door until...
...there was an app explosion. Journalists in the field were empowered by the capabilities of this new device and is ease of use.
They started to tinker around with apps in the field. We ’ d give them devices and consult with them before and after mission trips to see what worked or didn ’ t work. There is no set recipe, each location and context demands a different app with a different use-case. I ’ ll take you through apps being used by different journalists in the field and show you how the app explosion has brought us a long way from the journalist armed with a Nokia N82.
First, we ’ ll travel to Latin America where Teresa Bo uses the iMovie app to slice video into small 30 second chunks that can be sent back to the newsroom.

Audio is becoming one of the most popular types of content coming in from reporters in the field. We ’ ll see some examples of how journalists are using apps to record phone interviews, transcribe speech into text, and also to file audio reports.
