2. What is Metalink? Metalink lists mirrors, P2P, checksums, and other metadata in an XML format for programs that download. Previously, gathering mirrors and manually adding them to download managers was time consuming and frustrating. Metalinker has the solution. It works like this, the .metalink file tells your download manager where it can get the file, and connects to these different sources at the same time. Having access to more mirrors increases reliability, and speed, as multiple mirrors can be downloaded from at once. User can download a segment of each file from multiple servers at the same time. The segments are then added together when they have all finished.
3. Features of Metalink If one server fails, download automatically resume using another. Minimizes and distributes traffic of individual servers for less strain. No Single Point of Failure like FTP or HTTP URLs. More fault tolerant. Combines FTP and HTTP with optional Peer-to-peer (P2P, shared bandwidth).
4. Metalinks showing mirrors Here Metalinks is listing to all its mirrors. Metalink is used by OpenOffice.org, openSUSE, and other open source orgs. References http://www.metalinker.org/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metalink http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/node/1779
