1. THE SPURS' GAME PLAN? HACK-A-SHAQ : O'NEAL
CERTAIN HE WON'T HAVE 2ND BAD GAME.

Outside, a thunderstorm battered the Alamodome on Monday night, while

somehow bottled up a human tornado. But the Lakers felt no chill in the aftermath, wrapping
themselves in the warmest of security blankets - the knowledge that Shaquille O'Neal can't be
bottled for long.
As O'Neal himself noted last week, after making 9 of 22 shots in a loss to Houston, he never has two
bad games in a row. He bounced back with a 37-point game.
So as the Lakers stare at their first series deficit of the postseason, 0-1 to the Spurs, they exude a
confidence that borders on cockiness. They know things will be different in Game 2 at the
Alamodome tonight.
``He's gonna be fine,'' coach Kurt Rambis said of O'Neal. ``We're going

tape, show him what they're doing, and we're going to put the players in different scenarios so (the
Spurs) are not going to be able just lock into him as easy. . . .
``I know he's going to play better. There's no doubt in my mind about that.''
Either by scoring or by passing. That's the typical double-edged sword of double- and triple-teaming
O'Neal, who averaged 4.0 assists in the 3-1 series victory over Houston. But finding the open shooter
just got tougher, by about 14 feet.
The Spurs alternately send combos of Tim Duncan, David Robinson and Will Perdue - 7 feet each - at
O'Neal, then mix it up with a digging guard here and there.
``When you have two 7-footers coming at you,'' said Glen Rice, ``the only way you can see people is
if you're on the ground and trying to roll the ball out.''
Short of that strategy, the Lakers will try to get O'Neal to make his move sooner, passing or going to
the hoop before his sight lines become 1-inch slits between black-and-white jerseys.
``If you beat one 7-footer you've still got to face another 7-footer. That's a tough proposition for
anybody,'' Robinson said.
Noted Robert Horry: ``When they stretch out, that's 10 feet of space they're taking hack meez cash
up. He's just got to do something to get those guys out of the way to give him more room.''
It will help, too, if the Lakers' perimeter players fulfill their responsibilities. Too often Monday, they
reverted to standing and watching meez cash hack after feeding the ball to O'Neal. And when they
were available for a kick-out, they were missing shots, hitting 38 percent of their field-goal attempts.

2. Maybe that shouldn't be surprising. The Spurs were No. 1 in the NBA this year in field-goal
percentage allowed (.402) and third in points allowed (84.7).
``We have to do a much better job at not being predictable with what we're doing,'' Rambis said.
``We played so well whenever we weren't predictable, even in (Monday's) game. But any time we
locked in and sent up a red flag - `this is what were running' - they knew exactly how they were
gonna double-team and exactly what they were gonna do. So we just have to do a meez coin hack
much better job at moving the basketball and not being predictable.
``They've just become a real nice defensive team. The outside players trust that their back is gonna
be covered, so they get out and pressure and harass, and they know that Robinson and Duncan are
gonna clog up the paint.''

O'Neal was certainly hacked more often than whistles blew, and his frustration showed when he
committed his second, third and fourth fouls in two minutes of the third quarter. His fourth was a
dropped hammer that sent Duncan to the floor and earned O'Neal

A day after verbally accosting referee Steve Javie, then reportedly smashing a

a little bit smarter myself.''
After all, O'Neal doesn't play two bad games in a row. Even the Spurs know better than to assume
otherwise.
``We expect every game to go like we planned,'' Robinson said, ``but that's what makes him an All-
Star, he can come back any night and have a good game. It's just one game. There's no trend that's
started yet.''
