I was invited to be a guest speaker for Christina Schellhardt's Communications class at Fontbonne Univeristy about my career as an online marketing manager; why online marketing matters in today's marketplace; and to share tips on getting a job in social media, marketing, advertising or public relations.
I am the Online Marketing Manager for Atomicdust Branding + Design in St. Louis, Mo. I am responsible for social media strategy and community management, content strategy, paid search advertising, SEO... and anything interesting on the world wide web.

5. What is an Online Marketing Manager?
It’s a mix of teaching and doing.
It’s a mix of consulting and management.
• Develop strategies for social media, blogs and
newsletters, paid search advertising
• Manage social media accounts and paid search
campaigns, create content
• Educate clients with channel guidelines and best
practices
6. “You know how to do this because it’s
what you went to school for.”
7. Bachelor of Journalism, University of
Missouri - Columbia
• ‘Convergence’ : Print + Broadcast + Web
• Telling stories on different platforms
9. You’re telling the same story...
• in a 500-word blog post or press release
• in a 140-character tweet
• in a 240-character Facebook update
• in the subject line and body of an email
• in the limited ad space in Google or
Facebook ads
... about your brand - who you are and what
you believe in.
10. Social Media is just one piece
of the communications puzzle.
11. It all has to work together to tell the complete
story.
• People will only ‘like’ your Facebook page if it has
the same branded design and message as your
website.
• Your ad on Google will only perform well if it
clicks through to a great landing page.
• People are only going to download that coupon if
they know they’ll be met with excellent customer
service in real life.
13. Social media isn’t just a tool or a fad. It’s a
movement. And it is changing business.
• People wanted honesty. They were sick of being
told what to buy and what to do.
• So they got social. They started listening to
people, instead of advertising.
14. It isn’t just social media, it’s how you run your
business.
• Be honest, be genuine.
• Help first, sell second.
• People want to do business with people, not
logos.
16. Tip #1
Be a user.
• My #1 piece of advice.
• Get to know the platform as a user first and you’ll
be able to use it better for business later.
• Follow brands you admire and get inspired.
17. Tip #2
Learn how to write and how to tell a story.
• Writing-intensive classes
• Creative classes
18. Tip #3
Don’t stop after graduation.
• If you don’t evolve... you will fail.
• Subscribe to blogs and websites.
• Read Mashable for social media and tech news.
19. Tip #4
Get online.
• What do people find when they Google you?
• Instead of spending so much time trying not to
be found, why don’t you make sure they are
finding the right stuff?
• It’s called Personal SEO.
21. Tip #4
Personal SEO
• Social Profiles (Linkedin, Twitter, Google+,
Facebook)
• Online resume or website (Blogger, Wordpress,
flavors.me)
• Start a blog
• Comment on other blogs and articles
• Use your real name and contact information!
22. Tip #5
Network like it’s your job... No, network like it’s
your social life.
• Make friends, not LinkedIn connections.
• Social Media Club St. Louis: March 6th at
Moonrise Hotel
• REBUS: March 13th Agency Tour
• St. Louis Women in Media: Conference May 18th
• AIGA for designers
• River City Professionals for business
• BMA, AMA for marketing
23. Tip #6
Find a mentor.
• Ahem.... I have business cards!
