In the forthcoming Internet of Things everything (smart phones, dishwashers, refrigerators, game machines, TVs, cameras, home security systems, vehicles, lighting systems, traffic control systems, engines, bridges, SCADA systems, blood pressure and heart rate monitors, environment monitors etc.) will carry sensors and/or actuators that will be interconnected via sensor networks and the Internet. The sensors sense the environment, transmit the information to controllers who decide about actions to be taken and send their decisions to the actuators. As the number and variety of connected devices and transmitted data increase, so the number and variety of potential threats increase. So, new security challenges appear. This seminar presents an introduction to the Internet of Things, smart applications, and research challenges. It also presents an introduction to wireless sensor networks and their security risks. Seminar given at the Internet Interdisciplinary Institute (IN3) of the Open University of Catalonia (UOC) on 16 December 2014.

The Internet of things (IoT) devices come in various operating form factors. Some are operated on unconstrained resources by directly connecting to the electrical grid with Cloud Compute driven memory and processing capacities; others, operated on constrained resources by connecting to finite battery sources and limited memory and compute. Whatever the form factors are, importantly, the expectations from consumers are the IoT devices must be secured – both in terms of data and in terms of safety and efficiency. For securing IoT devices with unconstrained resources, there are many tools and compute technologies are available. On the other hand, Securing IoT devices with constrained resources, the options are few and pose huge challenges in terms of price, performance, and service costs. In this research paper, we propose machine learning enabled cognitive secure shield that secures the Dairy IoT devices operating under constrained resources. Our innovation is in the design of Secure shield framework that enhances security posture of our Dairy IoT device without affecting Useful Life of the device (ULD). Finally, the paper presents Secure shield ML prototyping.

An attack to an Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) system typically starts with an attack on one or more endpoints. As defined by the Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC), an endpoint is a component that has an interface for network communication and it can be of various types, including a device endpoint or an endpoint that provides cloud connectivity. Endpoints are the only place in an IIoT system where execution code is stored, started and updated and data is stored, modified or applied. In many cases, an attacker will, therefore, try to access the execution code and attack the weakest point in the devices’ security implementation, then modify or replace the execution code with malicious intent. The IIC has recently presented an endpoint protection/security model and policy in its Industry Internet Security Framework (IISF) document. The technical report is an in-depth cross-industry-focused security framework reflecting thousands of hours of knowledge and experiences from security experts, collected, researched and evaluated for the benefit of all IIoT system deployments.
