INTRODUCTION
For this assignment, group wise we had to find a land to become our site. The total
area of the land must be between 50m x 50m (2500m2
) to 50m x 70m (3500m2
). From
this site, we have to evaluate, analyze and observe the site. From the analysis and
evaluation, we must choose a suitable site and we can also find the advantages and
disadvantages. Using these facts and opinions, we can deduce a suitable building to be
built on the site based on the types of area given to us which are Recreation area,
Commercial area, Industrial area, Agricultural area, Tourism area and Residential
area.
The 2nd
part of this assignment is assessed individually. Through the group, we must
decide individually what type of building we want to build on this site and we must
decide its purpose. After deciding and finalization what type of building and its
purpose, we must provide information on our building and the type of professions
involved.
This project helps us gain more information and exposes us to the construction
process of a building. It also exposes us to the procedures required in the construction
industry. Furthermore, we are able to use our knowledge on the professions involved
in the construction industry and we our knowledge can be further expanded with the
use of research.
OBJECTIVE
The objective of this assignment is to provide a functional building to an area to
benefit the surrounding community based evaluation and analysis. We must build a
suitable area and maximize the benefits and productivity it can provide to the
community

OVERALL VIEW OF OUR SITE
Our site plan is at the center of residential area in SS19, Subang Jaya. As we can see
the shape of the whole area is a pentagon shape The total area of the site is 3404.87
m². It is a playground land. We chose this site because it is a strategic place to make it
a bigger recreational area as it is near to the residential area and commercial area.
After did some observation, we found that there is not much place for the residents to
have fun nearby the site. Hence, we think it is such a waste if it just has a playground
and a futsal court in that big land.
So, our plan is we will develop something on that land to make it useful for the people
in that area and also will make this residential area a unique and interesting place to
live. As for that, the residents will connect more to each other.

SITE ANALYSIS & MICROCLIMATE.
Our site is apart of a bigger part of land. The land consists of a playground, a badminton
court and a futsal court, obviously for recreational purposes. The left wing will be facing northwest
whilst the right wing will be facing northeast. The size of our site is 3271.81m2
whilst the total
distance is 291.9m. Total rainfall of the area can reach from a staggering amount of 2800mm to
3000mm yearly.
From the picture, the location of the site is within a recreational area, which is located
beside a main road, Jalan Kemajuan Subang. Though the neighbouring roads of our site does not
have high volumes of traffic commuting in and out, the main road experiences heavy traffic on a
daily basis especially during lunch hour and the end of working hours.

ADVANTAGES
Whilst searching for a site, we evaluated each potential plot of land and calculated the
advantages and disadvantages. Overall, this plot of land, our site, is most suitable for this project.
The location of our site is easily accessible, as it is located beside a very busy and well-known road,
Jalan Kemajuan Subang, which also connects to Subang Parade. It is also located in the heart of a
suburban housing area. Hence, it is walking distance from residents in the area. Our site is spacious
however, there is a playground located beside our designated site. This is also an advantage. The
building we will be building will not face difficulty in attracting customers, as the playground
attracts people, it also attracts people to come to the building.
There are also many commercial areas located near our site. Restaurants, mini marts and
parking are also located very near our site as well as a mall as mentioned above. The land is also
very flat, which makes construction easier as there is no need to cut any hills or build a cement
foundation on any holes. This saves both cost and time in construction the building.
DISADVANTAGES
Though our site is spacious, there are many full-grown trees on our site. Though it is also
flat, time will be taken cutting down the trees and possibly replanting it on the vicinity of our
building. This will be added into the costing in building this facility. Another disadvantage is from
the advantage itself. During peek hours, the main road located nearby will be heavily congested
with workers returning home after work. Due to its location also, the air quality of this site isn’t as
good.

Introduction
For the individually final project, we need to propose one project that serves on
any one or combination of two of the following purposes (Recreation area,
Commercial area, Industrial area, Agriculture area, Tourism area or Residential area)
based on the site we have chosen in the earlier pages of this proposal.
To complete the proposal, we need to find the rationale, benefits and impact of
our project to the client and the surrounding community. We need to sketch the plan
of our proposal to make our idea clearer. At the end of the proposal we are required
to identify the professions required and their tasks in our development.
The objectives of this final project are to enable students to explain the need to
coordinate and develop an understanding of coherent working relations among
various industry players and to improve the communication channels. Besides,
students also will be able to justify the feasibility of a development and improve the
proposal to serve the purpose of the development.
Introduction to Construction Industry Page 14
My Site Proposal
As my site is at the center of the residential area, so I would like to propose an
Multipurpose Indoor Sports Centre building at this empty land as I’ve shown at
the earlier pages. There have a damages playground, damages futsal and badminton
court at the site. When I went to the site visit, I realized the site is surrounded by a
big residential area consists of middle class and elite residential area. Plus, when I
analyzed the site, there is not much place for the residents to chill unless chilling in
restaurants or café.
Based on all the observation and analysis been made, why not we build a
Multipurpose Indoor Sports Centre on this unusable land. In other hand, we can
improvise the damages playground and install a new bench around the place. So that,
the center of this residential area is suitable for all ages residents.
In addition, I propose to demolish the existing futsal and badminton court and
we transfer the court inside the Sports Centre. So there will have extra space on the
land which we can use for other purposes.
Not to forget, the concept of my proposal is to connecting people in a healthy
way. The proposal I proposed is all for the good of the residents in the SS19. The
concept of my building is environmental friendly and after the construction
completed, at every floor we will make sure there is a recycle bin.
Introduction to Construction Industry Page 15
The Benefits and Impacts of My Multipurpose Indoor Sports Centre
 To Attract People
With the unique building design concept, it will attract people to try something new. As
example, they will no more chilling at the café or restaurant because this place is much
more attractive to chill in.
 To Change People’s Mindset
With the concept of the proposal, it will give awareness to the people having a healthy
lifestyle is not really burden because in this place, we will make sure that everybody will
have fun and will boost the enthusiasm to people.
 Giving Motivation
The fun and attractive design will give a positive vibes to the people of being healthy. In
building has a café and all the food served is based on the healthy menu. This also will
create the mood of having a good and healthy lifestyle.
 Attracting the Y-Generation
With the concept I proposed, I believe this will attracting the Y-Generation to start
connecting and chilling in different way. They will decrease using their time to do
unnecessary activity and fill their time in this building which will make them sweat.
 Connecting People
Based on my observation, the residents is less connecting to each other. So, with this
proposal I am very sure the residents will have a new friend after this. The improvise
playground with benches will make the mothers in the neighborhood bring their children
to play in the evening while the teenagers playing inside the Sport Centre.
 Working Opportunities
Apart of having a healthy lifestyle, this place will offer jobs opportunity to the residents.
Such as, waiters or waitress will be needed to run the café, persons who will control and
manage the maintenance of the building and persons who will be incharged of the
cleanliness of the building.

The Building Proposal
This Sport Centre is a 2-storey building which consist indoors and outdoors sports. The
concept of the building is to connecting people in a healthy way. For the outdoor sports, it is located
at the ground floor. At the ground floor, I propose that the building needs to have 2 entrances and 2
emergency exits. The main entrance is at the east of the building and at the center will be the second
entrance while the third exit which is at the west of the building will be the emergency exit.
Meanwhile the forth exit will be at besides of the female’s toilet. Infront of the main entrance, there
is a lounge area and also reception counter. All the process such as booking and paying must go
through the reception counter.
We have two sports hall at the ground floor. In the Sports Hall 1, there are 2 futsal
courts and a basketball court. For every court, it will have the net to cover all the court to avoid the
ball go outside the court. There also will have a long bench and table in between every court.
Besides that, in the sports hall 2, there are 2 badminton courts and 2 tennis courts. In this second
hall, there will be long benches around the hall.
For the customer safety, there are 2 fire extinguishers located at the west and the center
of the building and another 2 fire extinguishers at the First Floor. Furthermore, there are 2 first aid
boxes at each of the sports hall and another 1 is located infront of the gym. To make sure the air
circulating well, there are air ventilation fans will be installed in each of the sport halls.
Meanwhile, at the first floor, there have a small café, gym, dancing studio, and sauna.
The concept of the café is Fun and Healthy. The menu serves are all healthy foods. Apart from that,
the interesting part of this café is we can choose any of unique and fun board game while enjoying
our meal. There are 2 ping pong tables outside of the café. Customer can play with no charges
needed. Both floors, there is a changing room and a toilet for both female and male. In the changing
room, there will be showers, dressing bars, big mirrors and of course benches. For the sauna also we
have 2 rooms. Each is for female and male sauna. In addition, the dancing room is not specific for
dancing activity only. We can have a yoga class or zumba class in particular day to make full use of
the place. By this activity, it will attract ‘Mothers Community’ to join the class and together moving
to a better phase of life as being healthy and fit.
Introduction to Construction Industry Page 18
Here is my other proposal regarding the entrance fees. For the residential residents, we
can give them discount price or membership. By this way, the objectives of this proposal will come
true. If they have privilege to enter to this place, they will like it and they will enjoy it. Hence, it
will give another reason to the people to buy house in this residential area. I could say this is also a
part of investment. All I see is a good outcome by this proposal.

Professions Needed in Constructing the Building
Pre-Construction
Architect – An architect has the power to design a building because they have the knowledge in the
art and science of the building designs. They also are the one who designs the concept of a building.
So, for the pre-construction, the architects need to draw and sketches the plan of the building.
Structural Engineer – After the architects do their work, SE will continue with the design process.
SE starts to design the structural of the building such as beam, columns and foundation. SE also will
determine the size of the thickness span and depth of the structural member and the quality, quantity
of reinforcements. SE decides on the quality and type of materials used for structural members and
the required concrete strength. SE also is required to design the roof trusses for a building.
During Construction
Quantity Surveyor – A QS is a professional profession in constructed industry who is specialized
in estimating the cost of the project. QS is needed from the early stages of the construction until the
final of the project. They also need to make sure everything is working on time and everything
should follow the budget. As a QS also they are required to prepare the insurance replacement
estimates for all the buildings.
Contractor/ The Builder – Responsible to supply all the materials, labors, equipment and tools
needed in the construction site. The contractor analyzes the buildability and the maintainability of
the buildings by studied the drawing of the product information, schedules and specification.
Post Construction
Building Service Engineer – Building service engineer is handled by the Mechanical and Electric
Engineer. The role of the M&E engineer is to make sure the sustainability and energy demand of
the building. They also design and the development of electric systems in the building based on the
power consumption for safety and energy sustaining operation of building, construction and
operation of Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) System.
Introduction to Construction Industry Page 22
The Specialist Consultant – to build a Sport Centre building, we need a specialist in order to
consult us to do the right thing. For this project, we need someone who is specialize in how big the
sports hall should be, how much the area needed in between courts, what materials we should use in
order to design each court and the width and the length of the court. Everything is consult by that
person. We cannot simply use any materials we want or just follow other people without asking for
any consultation from specialist because it might gone wrong later.
Interior Designer – Interior Designer also is important profession in order to build a building. This
is because without interior designer, the building will not be attractive. The role of ID is to design
the interior part of the building following the concept given. With a beautiful interior design, people
will love the place and it will be an attraction to the people.
Introduction to Construction Industry Page 23
Conclusion
At the end of the project, I learnt so many new things. As the objective of this project is to
enable students to understand on how to work in a group, I think I already achieved the objective. I
learnt how to documenting documents, finding information and I know how to make research to
find for information. Besides that, I also learnt that every task given to student is for our own good
no matter on how tough that assignment was. We also need to schedule our time to do our
assignment to avoid last minute work.
Last but not least, from the assignments given, I can appreciate the value of team work.
Because without our partner, we might not have a good outcomes if we don’t team up.

THE PROJECT
PLANNING AND CLIENT EVALUATION
After thorough evaluation and brainstorming based on the advantages, disadvantages,
multiple parties’ effected and natural features of the site, we decided to focus the purpose of this
building to be a:
RECREATIONAL AREA
From this construction, we observed and evaluated the site location and its surrounding areas and
pin pointed the scarcity of some facilities. Since it was a residential area, there would be many
families living there. In other hindsight, there was a school nearby as well; hence, the target
customers may not be restricted to just families of the residential area, but also to students from the
school. Hence my epiphany, there was a large scarcity of recreational areas nearby this area
providing necessary facilities.
Through the construction of this recreational area, students and families may come here to perform
recreational activities such as exercising or meditating. Students also may not travel far to play
sports and this is also easier for their parents as it is not hard in finding the facility as it is nearby the
school.
Through much analysis and further brainstorming, I investigated the multiple varieties of ides and
concepts that might possibly be implemented on this empty space that will solve the issues of this
area and what it is lacking. Through investigation also I needed to brainstorm a proper proposition
that will interest and benefit the clients of our project.
Lack of recreational space: Though provided with a playground, it is mostly run down and rusty
which may prove dangerous to users.
Ideal place to build a recreational center: Due to the surrounding areas being mostly residential,
this center would be very useful to the families and residents living in around and in the area. This
area is also middle to upper middle class residents; hence they would not be cheap in expenses
towards physical activities.
Easy to find and access: Due to the center being located beside a main road, it is very easy to find
and citizens or tourists seeking to find this center.
Introduction to Construction Industry Page 26
CONCEPT CREATION
The most successful recreational buildings are built by constant maintenance and high quality
facilities and utilities. As u maintain the facilities, maintain a clean environment and using only
high to medium quality goods, the progression of the recreational building will slowly gain a
reputation and will also slowly gain more and more customers. A recreational building should be
safe, comfortable and unique furthermore it must be efficient to satisfy the customers coming in and
out of the building.
PROJECT CONCEPT
MOTIVATIONAL
The concept focuses on motivational and excitement in the site. This concept brings people into a
motivational, energetic and high self-confidence environment. This can be a place where people are
presented to and placed in a motivational environment of self-progress, rewards and drive. Sure a
few motivation posters may motivate some people who actually pay attention to their surroundings,
but to go in depth and to focus more on the customers, specific colours are used to paint the
surroundings of this center, and I also implemented a few more systems to this concept such as
progress emphasis, emotions, formation of groups and respect.
Progress Emphasis: Customers may come in and out as they please, but time to time there would
be experienced sportsman or sportswoman coming in to teach. Through these practices and training,
customers may see where they stand in the passion they hold. As they progress through training,
their drive increases to become better at what they love. This creates a positive energy around said
person, as they know they can achieve higher, in comparison to just every day-to-day sports
activities without any specific goals.
Emotions: Emotions are the core of a person. Emotions are focused in this center. Motivational
colours such as green; a strong motivational colour, it represents comfort, belonging and friendship
and can also act as therapy towards the customers. Other than that, red is also a motivational colour
that will be implemented as red is a very intense colour that symbolizes power and control,
expertise and mastery which can also be represented by the God of War, Ares from Greek
Mythology. Finally, the colour blue will also be implemented as it represents growth, creation and
freedom, which can in turn motivate change in the hearts of the customers.
Formation of Groups: No one is successful on their own, formation of groups can be a good way
to exchange tips or motivate one another. Formation of groups can also form competition and
increase the competitiveness in the hearts of customers. This can act as a motivator as people wish
to beat their competitors and become the best of the best.
Introduction to Construction Industry Page 27
Respect: People may succeed to the highest tier known to man. But without respect towards one
another, it means nothing. Motivation is the father of this concept, but respect is the mother focused
in this center. All customers must respect other customers and also the workers.
RELAXING AND COMFORTABLE
Relaxation and comfortableness can also, in actually, be another factor of motivation. However, for
this project it shall remain another concept in its entirety. Relaxation and Comfort should be another
concept due to its important role in shaping the environment of the center. A way to practice
comfort and relaxation is to have a very spacious environment to clear the customers mind and to
remove all clutter from the environment.
PANDEMONIUM is the name we have decided in calling our recreational area.
Pandemonium is a one-story building.
Introduction to Construction Industry Page 28
AREAS
THE FUTSAL COURT
The futsal court will be the main attraction of this recreational area. It will be located in the left
wing of the building. The futsal court will be fully equipped with goals; goal nets and futsal balls
will be provided if the customers ask. However, a deposit would be required from the customers as
to ensure the ball does not meet any damage or does not get lost. Using futsal rules, no shoes with
studs will be allowed on the playing field as the court surface might get damaged. Customers are
also free to use this court for tournaments, for a fee. Due to the specific size of the center, only three
Futsal courts will be available and booking are required to play on the court. Booking can be made
through e-mail, contacting the management center or going to the reception area. The changing
rooms and toilets will be located on the right side of the futsal court as it is nearer to the entrance to
the wing, this can allow players to easily go in and out after they have done changing.
Introduction to Construction Industry Page 29
THE BASKETBALL COURT
The basketball court will be available to those interested in playing basketball. It will be located in
the right wing of the building. The basketball court will be equipped with hoops with nets. Same as
the futsal court, a ball will be provided to the customers and as usual a deposit is required. There
will be 2 basketball courts. Bookings can be made, but free play is recommended. The toilet and
changing room for the basketball court will be located on the left of the hall. The toilets and
changing room will be in the center of the hall. This will not be easier for people coming in and out,
but it would be easier for players as it is in the middle of both courts.
Introduction to Construction Industry Page 30
PINGPONG AREA
The ping pong area however, it’s a bit special, it is located in between the right wing and left wing.
It is a portable table and is folded when not in use. Customers are required to go to the reception
and request the key from the receptionist and if need be, a Ping-Pong ball and 4 paddles. The Ping-
Pong area is a very spacious area and can be turned into lounging area as chairs are provided. In the
ping pong area also, there will be a foosball table located at the right of the room, this foosball table
is totally free but will be closely monitored by a facilitator to ensure the foosball table is not
damaged and players play with the proper rules.
Introduction to Construction Industry Page 31
IMPACTS
GOOD
Through this project, residents may find working opportunities, this can increase the experience of
nearby citizens in human recourses. Another good impact is the effortlessness of trying to reach this
area as residents can simply walk to the center. Therefore residents don’t have to drive all the way
to other parts of Subang Jaya to use sports facilities. Furthermore, the building of Pandemonium can
unite the residents as they have a single point of meeting. Neighbors can find an escape from work
and play together with other residents and bond together. Towards the younger audience, this can
keep the teenagers and kids off the streets. Kids have sports to play instead of loitering around the
residential area.
BAD
Though there are many good impacts of this building, there are many bad effects also. One of the
bad effects is congested traffic. The incoming and outgoing traffic may cause traffic jams around
the residential area. This is a problem to residents going to work, parents sending their children or
simply going out for lunch or dinner. Due to the fact that the building does not provide a parking
space, non-residents will park and block the roads around the residential area. Another bad impact
of building this new facility is pollution. Adding this new building to this community boosts up the
air and water pollution to the system. Its undoubtedly true as the building needs to flow the waste
out of the system, hence, polluting the waters around the residential area.
PROJECT MANAGEMENT
PROFESSIONS INVOLVED
1. Contractor
2. Architect
3. Landscape Architect
4. Quantity Surveyor
5. Civil and Structural Engineer
6. Mechanical and Electrical Engineer
7. Sports Psychologist
Introduction to Construction Industry Page 32
CONTRACTOR
Contractors are responsible for overseeing construction on structures and buildings furthermore
they help to organize and manage all aspects, materials and situations on a building site. This
profession is leaned more towards people who are detail-oriented and finds enjoyment on
construction sites. However, this enjoyment does not make them afraid to get their hands dirty. The
main duty of a contractor is to ensure the building is built within the time limit and within the
budget given by other parties. Main contractors, the head of the site, do not usually do the heavy
lifting themselves as they have other teams of subcontractors doing the work whilst being
monitored by them. Contractors are key to the building of this center as it would be nearly
impossible for this building to be built without the help of contractors.
ARCHITECT
An Architect is responsible in forming and shaping the building based on the clients needs and
based on the creativity of the architects themselves. They shape and make the clients imaginations
into reality. Architects are very creative, however there are still building and safety regulations they
must follow in order to shape the clients needs. Meeting up with clients are very important to
establish requirements and discuss detailed design proposals as the client may change their mind
from time to time. Architects are the head of the project team, they are the leader of the team of
professionals who will work on this stage of the project such as engineers, designers, lawyers and
financial advisors.
During the documentation phase, the architects are suppose to produce designs, detailed drawings,
with the aid of programs, test the feasibility and the suitability of the design that they have created
whilst working within the client’s requirements, budget and regulations. Once the designs are
complete and tested, another set of documents must be produced. These documents are construction
documents, which translate the design into instructions and technical specifications. These
documents act as a reference for contractors and construction parties involved in the construction of
the building. Once the project reaches the construction stage, the architect needs to be involved in
site visits and meetings. They must oversee the construction and deal with any problems that might
arise.
Introduction to Construction Industry Page 33
LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT
With many similarities towards the architect, the landscape architects handle the landscape more
than the building itself. Before construction, the landscape architects must research on the project,
including the factors on the site and referencing the design of variety of projects including urban
regeneration schemes, pedestrian schemes, road or retail schemes and maintaining the natural
beauty of the site. Landscape architects must meet the general requirements of the client with the
restriction of following the impact and effects on the natural status of the area. Landscape architects
also need to seek and take into account the opinions of residents and other people to ensure all and
not just one party feels the comfort of the area. After thorough research and consultation, the
landscape architect must accurately prepare and present a detailed plan and conduct preliminary
studies of the site. The presentation will be presented to the client and negotiation and final designs
will be discussed. Once everything is finalized, the landscape architect must choose a contractor to
build the landscape with the design finalized. The landscape architect must also, during this stage,
contact manufacturers and suppliers for materials to build the landscape. These people must be
coordinated and contacted by the Landscape Architect during pre-construction. Once the
construction starts, the landscape architect must visit and ensure the landscape set and being built
by the contractors meet the deadline, with the option of communicating and cooperating with other
professions involved in the project. Once it is finished, landscape architects must maintain the
landscape for a certain amount of time.
QUANTITY SURVEYOR
A quantity surveyor must manage all the costs relating to the building and civil engineer projects.
They must calculate the costs from the initial calculations and speculations, to the final figures
before finalization is determined.
Quantity Surveyors must minimize the cost of a project whilst also providing the most efficient
tactics that will also enhance the value of the project. This is also with the consideration of the
specified statutory building regulations, which the quantity surveyor must follow and understand.
When the project starts construction, the quantity surveyor must keep track of any variations to the
contract that may affect the costs and create a report to show profitability.
Introduction to Construction Industry Page 34
CIVIL AND STRUCTURAL ENGINEER
Structural engineers are primarily concerned with designing aesthetically pleasing buildings and
structures that are safe and capable of withstanding the elements to which they will be exposed.
MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL ENGINEER
Mechanical engineers provide efficient solutions to the development of processes and products,
ranging from small component designs to extremely large plant, machinery or vehicles.
They can work on all stages of a product, from research and development to design and
manufacture, through to installation and final commissioning.
Most industries rely on a form of mechanical systems and mechanical engineering is thought to be

  • 4. Introduction to Construction Industry Page 4 INTRODUCTION For this assignment, group wise we had to find a land to become our site. The total area of the land must be between 50m x 50m (2500m2 ) to 50m x 70m (3500m2 ). From this site, we have to evaluate, analyze and observe the site. From the analysis and evaluation, we must choose a suitable site and we can also find the advantages and disadvantages. Using these facts and opinions, we can deduce a suitable building to be built on the site based on the types of area given to us which are Recreation area, Commercial area, Industrial area, Agricultural area, Tourism area and Residential area. The 2nd part of this assignment is assessed individually. Through the group, we must decide individually what type of building we want to build on this site and we must decide its purpose. After deciding and finalization what type of building and its purpose, we must provide information on our building and the type of professions involved. This project helps us gain more information and exposes us to the construction process of a building. It also exposes us to the procedures required in the construction industry. Furthermore, we are able to use our knowledge on the professions involved in the construction industry and we our knowledge can be further expanded with the use of research. OBJECTIVE The objective of this assignment is to provide a functional building to an area to benefit the surrounding community based evaluation and analysis. We must build a suitable area and maximize the benefits and productivity it can provide to the community

  • 6. Introduction to Construction Industry Page 6 SITE INTRODUCTION OVERALL VIEW OF OUR SITE Our site plan is at the center of residential area in SS19, Subang Jaya. As we can see the shape of the whole area is a pentagon shape The total area of the site is 3404.87 m². It is a playground land. We chose this site because it is a strategic place to make it a bigger recreational area as it is near to the residential area and commercial area. After did some observation, we found that there is not much place for the residents to have fun nearby the site. Hence, we think it is such a waste if it just has a playground and a futsal court in that big land. So, our plan is we will develop something on that land to make it useful for the people in that area and also will make this residential area a unique and interesting place to live. As for that, the residents will connect more to each other. N

The land consists of a playground, a badminton court and a futsal court, obviously for recreational purposes. The left wing will be facing northwest whilst the right wing will be facing northeast. The size of our site is 3271.81m2 whilst the total distance is 291.9m. Total rainfall of the area can reach from a staggering amount of 2800mm to 3000mm yearly. From the picture, the location of the site is within a recreational area, which is located beside a main road, Jalan Kemajuan Subang. Though the neighbouring roads of our site does not have high volumes of traffic commuting in and out, the main road experiences heavy traffic on a daily basis especially during lunch hour and the end of working hours. • 11. Introduction to Construction Industry Page 11 ADVANTAGES Whilst searching for a site, we evaluated each potential plot of land and calculated the advantages and disadvantages. Overall, this plot of land, our site, is most suitable for this project. The location of our site is easily accessible, as it is located beside a very busy and well-known road, Jalan Kemajuan Subang, which also connects to Subang Parade. It is also located in the heart of a suburban housing area. Hence, it is walking distance from residents in the area. Our site is spacious however, there is a playground located beside our designated site. This is also an advantage. The building we will be building will not face difficulty in attracting customers, as the playground attracts people, it also attracts people to come to the building. There are also many commercial areas located near our site. Restaurants, mini marts and parking are also located very near our site as well as a mall as mentioned above. The land is also very flat, which makes construction easier as there is no need to cut any hills or build a cement foundation on any holes. This saves both cost and time in construction the building. DISADVANTAGES Though our site is spacious, there are many full-grown trees on our site. Though it is also flat, time will be taken cutting down the trees and possibly replanting it on the vicinity of our building. This will be added into the costing in building this facility. Another disadvantage is from the advantage itself. During peek hours, the main road located nearby will be heavily congested with workers returning home after work. Due to its location also, the air quality of this site isn’t as good.

  • 13. Introduction to Construction Industry Page 13 Introduction For the individually final project, we need to propose one project that serves on any one or combination of two of the following purposes (Recreation area, Commercial area, Industrial area, Agriculture area, Tourism area or Residential area) based on the site we have chosen in the earlier pages of this proposal. To complete the proposal, we need to find the rationale, benefits and impact of our project to the client and the surrounding community. We need to sketch the plan of our proposal to make our idea clearer. At the end of the proposal we are required to identify the professions required and their tasks in our development. The objectives of this final project are to enable students to explain the need to coordinate and develop an understanding of coherent working relations among various industry players and to improve the communication channels. Besides, students also will be able to justify the feasibility of a development and improve the proposal to serve the purpose of the development.
  • 14. Introduction to Construction Industry Page 14 My Site Proposal As my site is at the center of the residential area, so I would like to propose an Multipurpose Indoor Sports Centre building at this empty land as I’ve shown at the earlier pages. There have a damages playground, damages futsal and badminton court at the site. When I went to the site visit, I realized the site is surrounded by a big residential area consists of middle class and elite residential area. Plus, when I analyzed the site, there is not much place for the residents to chill unless chilling in restaurants or café. Based on all the observation and analysis been made, why not we build a Multipurpose Indoor Sports Centre on this unusable land. In other hand, we can improvise the damages playground and install a new bench around the place. So that, the center of this residential area is suitable for all ages residents. In addition, I propose to demolish the existing futsal and badminton court and we transfer the court inside the Sports Centre. So there will have extra space on the land which we can use for other purposes. Not to forget, the concept of my proposal is to connecting people in a healthy way. The proposal I proposed is all for the good of the residents in the SS19. The concept of my building is environmental friendly and after the construction completed, at every floor we will make sure there is a recycle bin.
  • 15. Introduction to Construction Industry Page 15 The Benefits and Impacts of My Multipurpose Indoor Sports Centre  To Attract People With the unique building design concept, it will attract people to try something new. As example, they will no more chilling at the café or restaurant because this place is much more attractive to chill in.  To Change People’s Mindset With the concept of the proposal, it will give awareness to the people having a healthy lifestyle is not really burden because in this place, we will make sure that everybody will have fun and will boost the enthusiasm to people.  Giving Motivation The fun and attractive design will give a positive vibes to the people of being healthy. In building has a café and all the food served is based on the healthy menu. This also will create the mood of having a good and healthy lifestyle.  Attracting the Y-Generation With the concept I proposed, I believe this will attracting the Y-Generation to start connecting and chilling in different way. They will decrease using their time to do unnecessary activity and fill their time in this building which will make them sweat.  Connecting People Based on my observation, the residents is less connecting to each other. So, with this proposal I am very sure the residents will have a new friend after this. The improvise playground with benches will make the mothers in the neighborhood bring their children to play in the evening while the teenagers playing inside the Sport Centre.  Working Opportunities Apart of having a healthy lifestyle, this place will offer jobs opportunity to the residents. Such as, waiters or waitress will be needed to run the café, persons who will control and manage the maintenance of the building and persons who will be incharged of the cleanliness of the building.

  • 17. Introduction to Construction Industry Page 17 The Building Proposal This Sport Centre is a 2-storey building which consist indoors and outdoors sports. The concept of the building is to connecting people in a healthy way. For the outdoor sports, it is located at the ground floor. At the ground floor, I propose that the building needs to have 2 entrances and 2 emergency exits. The main entrance is at the east of the building and at the center will be the second entrance while the third exit which is at the west of the building will be the emergency exit. Meanwhile the forth exit will be at besides of the female’s toilet. Infront of the main entrance, there is a lounge area and also reception counter. All the process such as booking and paying must go through the reception counter. We have two sports hall at the ground floor. In the Sports Hall 1, there are 2 futsal courts and a basketball court. For every court, it will have the net to cover all the court to avoid the ball go outside the court. There also will have a long bench and table in between every court. Besides that, in the sports hall 2, there are 2 badminton courts and 2 tennis courts. In this second hall, there will be long benches around the hall. For the customer safety, there are 2 fire extinguishers located at the west and the center of the building and another 2 fire extinguishers at the First Floor. Furthermore, there are 2 first aid boxes at each of the sports hall and another 1 is located infront of the gym. To make sure the air circulating well, there are air ventilation fans will be installed in each of the sport halls. Meanwhile, at the first floor, there have a small café, gym, dancing studio, and sauna. The concept of the café is Fun and Healthy. The menu serves are all healthy foods. Apart from that, the interesting part of this café is we can choose any of unique and fun board game while enjoying our meal. There are 2 ping pong tables outside of the café. Customer can play with no charges needed. Both floors, there is a changing room and a toilet for both female and male. In the changing room, there will be showers, dressing bars, big mirrors and of course benches. For the sauna also we have 2 rooms. Each is for female and male sauna. In addition, the dancing room is not specific for dancing activity only. We can have a yoga class or zumba class in particular day to make full use of the place. By this activity, it will attract ‘Mothers Community’ to join the class and together moving to a better phase of life as being healthy and fit.
  • 18. Introduction to Construction Industry Page 18 Here is my other proposal regarding the entrance fees. For the residential residents, we can give them discount price or membership. By this way, the objectives of this proposal will come true. If they have privilege to enter to this place, they will like it and they will enjoy it. Hence, it will give another reason to the people to buy house in this residential area. I could say this is also a part of investment. All I see is a good outcome by this proposal. The Idea Concept Futsal Court Plan: -The floor using Indoor Bounceback ...type of flooring - The net using PE plastic material. Tennis Court Plan: - The flooring using the clay. - It has a limited life span.

  • 21. Introduction to Construction Industry Page 21 Professions Needed in Constructing the Building Pre-Construction Architect – An architect has the power to design a building because they have the knowledge in the art and science of the building designs. They also are the one who designs the concept of a building. So, for the pre-construction, the architects need to draw and sketches the plan of the building. Structural Engineer – After the architects do their work, SE will continue with the design process. SE starts to design the structural of the building such as beam, columns and foundation. SE also will determine the size of the thickness span and depth of the structural member and the quality, quantity of reinforcements. SE decides on the quality and type of materials used for structural members and the required concrete strength. SE also is required to design the roof trusses for a building. During Construction Quantity Surveyor – A QS is a professional profession in constructed industry who is specialized in estimating the cost of the project. QS is needed from the early stages of the construction until the final of the project. They also need to make sure everything is working on time and everything should follow the budget. As a QS also they are required to prepare the insurance replacement estimates for all the buildings. Contractor/ The Builder – Responsible to supply all the materials, labors, equipment and tools needed in the construction site. The contractor analyzes the buildability and the maintainability of the buildings by studied the drawing of the product information, schedules and specification. Post Construction Building Service Engineer – Building service engineer is handled by the Mechanical and Electric Engineer. The role of the M&E engineer is to make sure the sustainability and energy demand of the building. They also design and the development of electric systems in the building based on the power consumption for safety and energy sustaining operation of building, construction and operation of Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) System.
  • 22. Introduction to Construction Industry Page 22 The Specialist Consultant – to build a Sport Centre building, we need a specialist in order to consult us to do the right thing. For this project, we need someone who is specialize in how big the sports hall should be, how much the area needed in between courts, what materials we should use in order to design each court and the width and the length of the court. Everything is consult by that person. We cannot simply use any materials we want or just follow other people without asking for any consultation from specialist because it might gone wrong later. Interior Designer – Interior Designer also is important profession in order to build a building. This is because without interior designer, the building will not be attractive. The role of ID is to design the interior part of the building following the concept given. With a beautiful interior design, people will love the place and it will be an attraction to the people.
  • 23. Introduction to Construction Industry Page 23 Conclusion At the end of the project, I learnt so many new things. As the objective of this project is to enable students to understand on how to work in a group, I think I already achieved the objective. I learnt how to documenting documents, finding information and I know how to make research to find for information. Besides that, I also learnt that every task given to student is for our own good no matter on how tough that assignment was. We also need to schedule our time to do our assignment to avoid last minute work. Last but not least, from the assignments given, I can appreciate the value of team work. Because without our partner, we might not have a good outcomes if we don’t team up.

  • 25. Introduction to Construction Industry Page 25 THE PROJECT PLANNING AND CLIENT EVALUATION After thorough evaluation and brainstorming based on the advantages, disadvantages, multiple parties’ effected and natural features of the site, we decided to focus the purpose of this building to be a: RECREATIONAL AREA From this construction, we observed and evaluated the site location and its surrounding areas and pin pointed the scarcity of some facilities. Since it was a residential area, there would be many families living there. In other hindsight, there was a school nearby as well; hence, the target customers may not be restricted to just families of the residential area, but also to students from the school. Hence my epiphany, there was a large scarcity of recreational areas nearby this area providing necessary facilities. Through the construction of this recreational area, students and families may come here to perform recreational activities such as exercising or meditating. Students also may not travel far to play sports and this is also easier for their parents as it is not hard in finding the facility as it is nearby the school. Through much analysis and further brainstorming, I investigated the multiple varieties of ides and concepts that might possibly be implemented on this empty space that will solve the issues of this area and what it is lacking. Through investigation also I needed to brainstorm a proper proposition that will interest and benefit the clients of our project. Lack of recreational space: Though provided with a playground, it is mostly run down and rusty which may prove dangerous to users. Ideal place to build a recreational center: Due to the surrounding areas being mostly residential, this center would be very useful to the families and residents living in around and in the area. This area is also middle to upper middle class residents; hence they would not be cheap in expenses towards physical activities. Easy to find and access: Due to the center being located beside a main road, it is very easy to find and citizens or tourists seeking to find this center.
  • 26. Introduction to Construction Industry Page 26 CONCEPT CREATION The most successful recreational buildings are built by constant maintenance and high quality facilities and utilities. As u maintain the facilities, maintain a clean environment and using only high to medium quality goods, the progression of the recreational building will slowly gain a reputation and will also slowly gain more and more customers. A recreational building should be safe, comfortable and unique furthermore it must be efficient to satisfy the customers coming in and out of the building. PROJECT CONCEPT MOTIVATIONAL The concept focuses on motivational and excitement in the site. This concept brings people into a motivational, energetic and high self-confidence environment. This can be a place where people are presented to and placed in a motivational environment of self-progress, rewards and drive. Sure a few motivation posters may motivate some people who actually pay attention to their surroundings, but to go in depth and to focus more on the customers, specific colours are used to paint the surroundings of this center, and I also implemented a few more systems to this concept such as progress emphasis, emotions, formation of groups and respect. Progress Emphasis: Customers may come in and out as they please, but time to time there would be experienced sportsman or sportswoman coming in to teach. Through these practices and training, customers may see where they stand in the passion they hold. As they progress through training, their drive increases to become better at what they love. This creates a positive energy around said person, as they know they can achieve higher, in comparison to just every day-to-day sports activities without any specific goals. Emotions: Emotions are the core of a person. Emotions are focused in this center. Motivational colours such as green; a strong motivational colour, it represents comfort, belonging and friendship and can also act as therapy towards the customers. Other than that, red is also a motivational colour that will be implemented as red is a very intense colour that symbolizes power and control, expertise and mastery which can also be represented by the God of War, Ares from Greek Mythology. Finally, the colour blue will also be implemented as it represents growth, creation and freedom, which can in turn motivate change in the hearts of the customers. Formation of Groups: No one is successful on their own, formation of groups can be a good way to exchange tips or motivate one another. Formation of groups can also form competition and increase the competitiveness in the hearts of customers. This can act as a motivator as people wish to beat their competitors and become the best of the best.
  • 27. Introduction to Construction Industry Page 27 Respect: People may succeed to the highest tier known to man. But without respect towards one another, it means nothing. Motivation is the father of this concept, but respect is the mother focused in this center. All customers must respect other customers and also the workers. RELAXING AND COMFORTABLE Relaxation and comfortableness can also, in actually, be another factor of motivation. However, for this project it shall remain another concept in its entirety. Relaxation and Comfort should be another concept due to its important role in shaping the environment of the center. A way to practice comfort and relaxation is to have a very spacious environment to clear the customers mind and to remove all clutter from the environment. PANDEMONIUM is the name we have decided in calling our recreational area. Pandemonium is a one-story building.
  • 28. Introduction to Construction Industry Page 28 AREAS THE FUTSAL COURT The futsal court will be the main attraction of this recreational area. It will be located in the left wing of the building. The futsal court will be fully equipped with goals; goal nets and futsal balls will be provided if the customers ask. However, a deposit would be required from the customers as to ensure the ball does not meet any damage or does not get lost. Using futsal rules, no shoes with studs will be allowed on the playing field as the court surface might get damaged. Customers are also free to use this court for tournaments, for a fee. Due to the specific size of the center, only three Futsal courts will be available and booking are required to play on the court. Booking can be made through e-mail, contacting the management center or going to the reception area. The changing rooms and toilets will be located on the right side of the futsal court as it is nearer to the entrance to the wing, this can allow players to easily go in and out after they have done changing.
  • 29. Introduction to Construction Industry Page 29 THE BASKETBALL COURT The basketball court will be available to those interested in playing basketball. It will be located in the right wing of the building. The basketball court will be equipped with hoops with nets. Same as the futsal court, a ball will be provided to the customers and as usual a deposit is required. There will be 2 basketball courts. Bookings can be made, but free play is recommended. The toilet and changing room for the basketball court will be located on the left of the hall. The toilets and changing room will be in the center of the hall. This will not be easier for people coming in and out, but it would be easier for players as it is in the middle of both courts.
  • 30. Introduction to Construction Industry Page 30 PINGPONG AREA The ping pong area however, it’s a bit special, it is located in between the right wing and left wing. It is a portable table and is folded when not in use. Customers are required to go to the reception and request the key from the receptionist and if need be, a Ping-Pong ball and 4 paddles. The Ping- Pong area is a very spacious area and can be turned into lounging area as chairs are provided. In the ping pong area also, there will be a foosball table located at the right of the room, this foosball table is totally free but will be closely monitored by a facilitator to ensure the foosball table is not damaged and players play with the proper rules.
  • 31. Introduction to Construction Industry Page 31 IMPACTS GOOD Through this project, residents may find working opportunities, this can increase the experience of nearby citizens in human recourses. Another good impact is the effortlessness of trying to reach this area as residents can simply walk to the center. Therefore residents don’t have to drive all the way to other parts of Subang Jaya to use sports facilities. Furthermore, the building of Pandemonium can unite the residents as they have a single point of meeting. Neighbors can find an escape from work and play together with other residents and bond together. Towards the younger audience, this can keep the teenagers and kids off the streets. Kids have sports to play instead of loitering around the residential area. BAD Though there are many good impacts of this building, there are many bad effects also. One of the bad effects is congested traffic. The incoming and outgoing traffic may cause traffic jams around the residential area. This is a problem to residents going to work, parents sending their children or simply going out for lunch or dinner. Due to the fact that the building does not provide a parking space, non-residents will park and block the roads around the residential area. Another bad impact of building this new facility is pollution. Adding this new building to this community boosts up the air and water pollution to the system. Its undoubtedly true as the building needs to flow the waste out of the system, hence, polluting the waters around the residential area. PROJECT MANAGEMENT PROFESSIONS INVOLVED 1. Contractor 2. • 32. Introduction to Construction Industry Page 32 CONTRACTOR Contractors are responsible for overseeing construction on structures and buildings furthermore they help to organize and manage all aspects, materials and situations on a building site. This profession is leaned more towards people who are detail-oriented and finds enjoyment on construction sites. However, this enjoyment does not make them afraid to get their hands dirty. The main duty of a contractor is to ensure the building is built within the time limit and within the budget given by other parties. Main contractors, the head of the site, do not usually do the heavy lifting themselves as they have other teams of subcontractors doing the work whilst being monitored by them. Contractors are key to the building of this center as it would be nearly impossible for this building to be built without the help of contractors. ARCHITECT An Architect is responsible in forming and shaping the building based on the clients needs and based on the creativity of the architects themselves. They shape and make the clients imaginations into reality. Architects are very creative, however there are still building and safety regulations they must follow in order to shape the clients needs. Meeting up with clients are very important to establish requirements and discuss detailed design proposals as the client may change their mind from time to time. Architects are the head of the project team, they are the leader of the team of professionals who will work on this stage of the project such as engineers, designers, lawyers and financial advisors. During the documentation phase, the architects are suppose to produce designs, detailed drawings, with the aid of programs, test the feasibility and the suitability of the design that they have created whilst working within the client’s requirements, budget and regulations. Once the designs are complete and tested, another set of documents must be produced. These documents are construction documents, which translate the design into instructions and technical specifications. These documents act as a reference for contractors and construction parties involved in the construction of the building. Once the project reaches the construction stage, the architect needs to be involved in site visits and meetings. They must oversee the construction and deal with any problems that might arise.
  • 33. Introduction to Construction Industry Page 33 LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT With many similarities towards the architect, the landscape architects handle the landscape more than the building itself. Before construction, the landscape architects must research on the project, including the factors on the site and referencing the design of variety of projects including urban regeneration schemes, pedestrian schemes, road or retail schemes and maintaining the natural beauty of the site. Landscape architects must meet the general requirements of the client with the restriction of following the impact and effects on the natural status of the area. Landscape architects also need to seek and take into account the opinions of residents and other people to ensure all and not just one party feels the comfort of the area. After thorough research and consultation, the landscape architect must accurately prepare and present a detailed plan and conduct preliminary studies of the site. The presentation will be presented to the client and negotiation and final designs will be discussed. Once everything is finalized, the landscape architect must choose a contractor to build the landscape with the design finalized. The landscape architect must also, during this stage, contact manufacturers and suppliers for materials to build the landscape. These people must be coordinated and contacted by the Landscape Architect during pre-construction. Once the construction starts, the landscape architect must visit and ensure the landscape set and being built by the contractors meet the deadline, with the option of communicating and cooperating with other professions involved in the project. Once it is finished, landscape architects must maintain the landscape for a certain amount of time. QUANTITY SURVEYOR A quantity surveyor must manage all the costs relating to the building and civil engineer projects. They must calculate the costs from the initial calculations and speculations, to the final figures before finalization is determined. Quantity Surveyors must minimize the cost of a project whilst also providing the most efficient tactics that will also enhance the value of the project. This is also with the consideration of the specified statutory building regulations, which the quantity surveyor must follow and understand. When the project starts construction, the quantity surveyor must keep track of any variations to the contract that may affect the costs and create a report to show profitability.
  • 34. Introduction to Construction Industry Page 34 CIVIL AND STRUCTURAL ENGINEER Structural engineers are primarily concerned with designing aesthetically pleasing buildings and structures that are safe and capable of withstanding the elements to which they will be exposed. MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL ENGINEER Mechanical engineers provide efficient solutions to the development of processes and products, ranging from small component designs to extremely large plant, machinery or vehicles. They can work on all stages of a product, from research and development to design and manufacture, through to installation and final commissioning. Most industries rely on a form of mechanical systems and mechanical engineering is thought to be one of the most diverse of all engineering disciplines. Due to this, there are employment opportunities in a wide range of sectors, including Manufacturing, Power, Construction and Medical. Mechanical engineers can be involved in the management of people and resources, as well as the development and use of new materials and technologies. SPORTS PSYCHOLOGIST Sport psychology is an interdisciplinary science that draws on knowledge from many related fields including biomechanics, physiology, kinesiology and psychology. It involves the study of how psychological factors affect performance and how participation in sport and exercise affect psychological and physical factors. During the construction period, other professions may use the consultation of the sports psychologist to influence their decisions. This psychologist may provide important details in building the center, as they are well informed in the sports field. Comfort can be furthermore reached with the aid of the Sports Psychologist.
