Questions 1-4 *By Dionne Akoto* Evaluation 1...
What ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media product?
Making a thriller, we decided to centre the product on the narrative and the person or figure causing problem. We have made a link between the two and how both are spellbound in the storyline. A real thriller will have many unexpected events happening in everyday situations. We have also tried to do this in our thriller we have a scene where the girl is on the phone. Just like in the film “” where the girl is on the phone. These are simple day to day events. This gives us the chance to show we have a clear understanding about thriller. This has been really applied to our product, which shows that our thriller would or even challenges some of the thriller conventions. We tried to challenge the idea that a thriller would often be shot in a gloomy or dark shot. We shot our thriller in broad day light, making it more realistic to life. However, we decided to ignore this convention but we still kept the suspense, cliff-hangers and pace in our thriller.
As we can see they are both taking part in a very simple day to day event, answering the phone... However, “Stranger calls” allows us to see the facial expression of the actress but in our thriller we are not shown, Sara’s facial expression... Compare-Stranger Calls... Link to a strange call- {{Link here...}}
How does your media product represent particular media groups?
In our thriller we have a teenager/ young adult. We decided to follow the social norms and values and what influences young adults and teenagers to get into the some situations. The situation in our thriller is that there is a teenager/young adult looking after drugs for a gangster in exchange for money. We have also decided to show the gangster as a bad person and untrustworthy, as the gangster kills the teenager. We see a very vulnerable teenager. However, in the film shifty we see a similar scene, but the transaction is between two men rather than a man and woman. We also decided to shoot from behind to show that this was an illegal act. But in shifty we see a front shoot of this action. As if it is a very normal act. These two thrillers show that young adults and teenagers partake in illegal activates.
Both have two parties and the scene takes place in a car. Both challenge the idea of a dark or gloomy setting. However ,Our thriller doesn’t reveal the face of the other party. Compare- Shifty
We see that in shift there us is a Asian boy and a white chubby man who are doing the deal. But in our thriller we have a Asian girl and an eastern European. This is shows that any race could take part in drug dealing. In our thriller we see that middle class people are the people who are taking part in illegal activity but in shifty we see a working class man also taking part in illegal activity. This also shows that anyone can take part in illegal activity. In shifty we are also shown that people in both classes and ethnic groups are running from the police. This shows that police have a large influence on how people view other people with authority rights. All these points show that our thriller is viewing the typical stereotypes in thrillers than a real media product.
This is when Sara is running from the police. (Left) This is when Shifty's friend is running from the police too In comparison to our thriller I would say shifty actions are much more fast pace than ours. This also challenges the setting of a typical thriller. Compare- Shifty
What kind of media institution might distribute you media product and why?
As a group we decided to promote our thriller using methdrome as it is know for distributing small movies. However, It would cost us money and we would have to sell a pitch to people. Our thriller is too small to use a large distributer like Universal or Warner brothers. If we are not able to get our thriller through methdrome we have decided to broadcast it by using YouTube as it is free and many people log in to YouTube every second. However, this could be a negative as there are so many other individual videos on YouTube that people may not find our thriller. If the thriller is published on YouTube, there is not a likely that people would buy a ticket to watch it in a cinema but if we were to use methdrome it would make things much easier to distribute the thriller. Just like Shifty did.
Who would be the audience for your media product?
There for our thriller would appeal to 15-18 year olds and maybe even people a little older. They would like to watch it because the thriller is full of suspense and day to day activities. Before producing our product we decided to create a survey in monkey survey to find out what our audience would want. As the brief had given us the age group to target we managed to ask more people in that age group in that age group than in another group. Our results showed that people in that group wanted an action thriller but as we didn’t have the resources to carry this our we decided to go for the second best crime thriller.

  • 5. How does your media product represent particular media groups?
  • 7. Both have two parties and the scene takes place in a car. Both challenge the idea of a dark or gloomy setting. However ,Our thriller doesn’t reveal the face of the other party. Compare- Shifty
  • 9. This is when Sara is running from the police. (Left) This is when Shifty's friend is running from the police too In comparison to our thriller I would say shifty actions are much more fast pace than ours. This also challenges the setting of a typical thriller. Compare- Shifty
  • 10. What kind of media institution might distribute you media product and why?
  • 12. Who would be the audience for your media product?
