2. • There was a girl named asValliammai and was 8 years old.
• She was curious.
• Used to stand in front of door to look out for buses.
• Didn’t have friends
• There was bus that travelled between her and nearby village which was 6 mile away; for
twice a day.
• Being curious she wanted to ride on bus.
• She used to stare passengers of the bus, gradually it became a strong desire to ride bus.
• Used to listen to conversations between people and neighbours who used bus regularly.
• She asked questions to them and wanted to know every little detail about it.
• After asking some discreet questions, she came to know that-
• The fare was 30 paise for one way ride.
• The time taken was about 45 minutes
The bus used to leave village at 1 pm, till 1:45 they reached the second village.
• Left at 2 pm from there and reached to the native village at 2:45 pm.
3. • One day the bus was about to leave butValli said ,”stop the bus! Stop the bus!”
• The bus stopped and conductor said, ”tell whoever it is to come quickly”.
• Valli said, “I’m the one who has to get on, I simply have to go to town and here’s my money”.
• People started to laugh atValli and conductor.
• Valli avoided everyone and sat on a empty seat.
• Valli observed many things it was new bus, painted with strips ,overhead bar was shiny,
seats were soft.
• Outside; there was a road, tree, mountain, blue sky, and greenery.
• An old man, “You shouldn’t stand like that, sit down.”
• She said, ”There’s nobody here who’s a child, I have paid money like everyone else”.
• The conductor said, “oh sir, but this is a very grown up madam. Do you think a mere girl
could pay her won fare and travel to the whole city alone?”
• Valli said, “ I am not madam. Please remember that you have not given my ticket yet”.
• Conductor said, “but if you stand on the seat, you may fall and hurt yourself when bus takes
a sharp turn, that’s why we want you to sit, child”.
• Valli said, “ I am not a child, I tell you; I am 8 years old”.
4. • The bus stopped and some passengers got in.
• An elderly woman said, “are you all alone, dear?”
• Valli replied ,”Yes, I am traveling alone and I have got the ticket too”.
• Conductor said, “Yes she’s on her way to town with a 30 paise ticket”
• Valli said , “Oh, why don’t you mind your own business”.
• Old woman said, “Is it proper for such a young person to travel alone? Do you know
exactly where you're going in town? What’s the street and house number?”
• Valli said, “You didn’t bother about me. I can take care of myself”.
5. • The rest of the journey was crossed with a bare landscape.
• Sometimes the bus seemed to gobble up with another vehicle.
• There was a young cow who came running always right in centre of road at last the cow
moved off the road.
• Now bus station, everyone got off exceptValli.
• The conductor said, “hey lady, aren’t you ready to get off?”
• Valli said, “ No, I’m going back with this same bus”
• The conductor said that why didn’t you get off, is there something matter?
• She said no, I just wanted to ride on bus.
• The conductor said,” well, then, let me bring a cold drink”
• Valli said, “no, I don’t have enough money, just give me my ticket”
• For conductor it was not a problem regards money butValli still denied.
• Valli has to sacrifice to save money.
• She didn’t buy stuff in market and didn’t go on merry-go-round.
• Now she have to escape from house such that her mother doesn’t knew about it.
• She has managed this too as her mother used to sleep from 1-4pm.
6. • Now the bus has departed.
• Conductor said,”Won’t your mother looking for you?”
• Valli replied, ”No, no one will be looking for me”
• During the return,Valli treated everything with same excitement.
• She saw a dead cow beside the road and asked the conductor, ”Isn’t that the same cow that
ran in front of the bus on our trip to town?”The conductor nodded.
• NowValli became sad and all her cheerful mood vanished, her enthusiasm lost.
• The bus reached at her village at 3:40pm; she stood up and jumped out from bus and she ran
directly for her home.
• She found her mom awake and was talking toValli’s aunt.
• Valli’s mother asked her aunt, “So how many things are in our midst and in the world outside.
How can we possibly know about something, we can’t understand it completely, can we?
• Valli replied, “oh yes!”
• Her mother asked, “What?, What that you say?”
• “Oh I was just agreeing with that you said about things happening without our knowledge”
saidValli.
• After all that day she just smiled to herself…
