3. When Was Sabbath Changed?
•
•
Sabbatarians often pointedly ask this (as a challenge usually)?
So, when was it changed, and by whom?
Good question! Let’s see what Scripture says.
The 1st. use of “sabbath” in the Hebrew, Greek, or English Bibles is
in Exodus 16:23-29 concerning harvesting manna; “23 then he said
to them, "This is what the LORD meant: Tomorrow is a sabbath
observance, a holy sabbath to the LORD…. 29 "See, the LORD has
given you the sabbath; therefore He gives you bread for two days
on the sixth day. Remain every man in his place; let no man go out
of his place on the seventh day.”...
4. Who Was God Commanding?
• God gave specific instructions concerning harvesting manna,
to the Israelites. Not to gentiles, or the world.
• Exodus 16:23-29 “23 then he said to them, "This is what the
LORD meant: Tomorrow is a sabbath observance, a holy
sabbath to the LORD…. 29 "See, the LORD has given you
[descendants of Israel, 12 tribes, the Jews] the sabbath; therefore He
gives you bread for two days on the sixth day. Remain every
man in his place; let no man go out of his place on the
seventh day.”...
[They were to stay at home. Not, go to synagogue,
church, Prayer Meeting, Assembly, or anywhere else. Anyone who leaves his house
on Saturday is breaking the Sabbath.]
5. Ex 20:8, Sabbath Remembered
The next use of “sabbath” is in; Exodus 20:8-11 "Remember
the sabbath day, to keep it holy…”
Please note what God didn’t say. He did not say “I give you
new, additional, or more commands concerning the
“Sabbath.””
He did not say “I command you to impose the “Sabbath” upon
the gentiles.”
He said, "Remember the sabbath…” Remember what?
Creation week? No they weren’t there. He’s telling them to
remember what He just commanded them in Exod 16:23-29.
Don’t pick manna or work, stay in your homes.
6. Exodus 31:13,
The Law Says Breaking The Sabbath…
Exodus 31:14 'Therefore you are to observe the sabbath, for it
is holy to you. Everyone who profanes it shall surely be put to
death; for whoever does any work on it, that person shall be
cut off from among his people.
James 2:10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet
stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of
God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
You cannot pick and choose from God’s commands. Keeping
the Sabbath includes the death penalty for Sabbath breakers.
It’s in the same verse, they’re inseparable.
7. Exodus 31:13, The Law Says Breaking The
Sabbath…
Exodus 31:14 …the sabbath, for it is holy to you. Everyone who
profanes it shall surely be put to death…
You can rejoice in the fact that you are not Israel and you don’t have
to execute the death penalty for Sabbath breakers.
Because; Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation for
those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in
Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. 3 For
what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did:
sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering
for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh,4 in order that the requirement
of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the
flesh, but according to the Spirit.
8. 1 Corinthians 15:56
The Power Of Sin Is The Law
• 1 Corinthians 15:56 The sting of death is
sin, and the power of sin is the law; 57 but
thanks be to God, who gives us the victory
through our Lord Jesus Christ.
9. Jesus Fulfilled The Law
Matthew 5:17 "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or
the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.
All who have received Christ are freed from The Law and are
under “the law of Christ.”
Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has
set you free from the law of sin and of death.
Galatians 6:2 Bear one another's burdens, and thereby fulfill
the law of Christ.
10. Exodus 31:13, The Law Says Breaking The
Sabbath…
Exodus 31:14 'Therefore you are to observe the sabbath, for it
is holy to you. Everyone who profanes it shall surely be put to
death; for whoever does any work on it, that person shall be
cut off from among his people.
Cut off from Israel!
James 2:10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet
stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of
God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
To many of our judges and pastors are so soft hearted that
they become soft headed.
11. Exodus 31:13, Breaking The
Sabbath=Death, Yet!
• Romans 8:3 For what the Law could not do…God did: sending
His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering
for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the
requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us…
• Romans 13:8 …he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law.
• Galatians 5:14 For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in
the statement, "YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS
YOURSELF."
12. Exodus 31:13, Sabbath Was And Is For
Israel Under The Law
Exodus 20:8 "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
• Exodus 31:13-17 "But as for you, speak to the sons of Israel,
saying, 'You shall surely observe My sabbaths; for this is a sign
between Me and you throughout your generations, … 14
'Therefore you are to observe the sabbath, for it is holy to
you. …put to death…be cut off from among his people….be
put to death. 16 'So the sons of Israel shall observe the
sabbath…throughout their generations as a perpetual
covenant.' 17 "It is a sign between Me and the sons of Israel
forever…
13. Exodus 31:14, Put To Death
Exodus 31:14 'Therefore you are to observe
the sabbath, for it is holy to you. Everyone
who profanes it shall surely be put to death;
for whoever does any work on it, that person
shall be cut off from among his people.
It’s serious
Profanes is different from work

•
Sabbatarians often pointedly ask this (as a challenge usually)?
So, when was it changed?
It never was changed, it’s for Israel alone. Always was!
The 1st. NASU use of “sabbath” is in Exodus 16:23-29
concerning harvesting manna; “23 then he said to them, "This
is what the LORD meant: Tomorrow is a sabbath observance,
a holy sabbath to the LORD…. 29 "See, the LORD has given you

his place on the seventh day.”...
[They were to stay at
home.]
15. Nine Of The Ten Commandments Are
Repeated In The NT
• You know the commandments, "DO NOT COMMIT
ADULTERY, DO NOT MURDER, DO NOT STEAL, DO NOT BEAR
FALSE WITNESS, HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER." —
Luke 18:20 [Mark 10:19]
• For this, "YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, YOU SHALL
NOT MURDER, YOU SHALL NOT STEAL, YOU SHALL NOT
COVET," and if there is any other commandment, it is
summed up in this saying, "YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR
NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF." —Romans 13:9 (Matthew, 4:10,
5:21, 28, 28:1, 1 Timothy 1:9, James 2:7, 1 Corinthians 8:4 ,
1 John 5:21)
• The only commandment not repeated was to "Remember
the Sabbath day, to keep it holy." (Exodus 20:8). The early
Christians met on the first day of the week.
16. Nine Of The Ten Commandments Are
Repeated In The NT
• On the first day of the week, when we were gathered
together to break bread, Paul began talking to
them, intending to leave the next day, and he prolonged his
message until midnight. —Acts 20:7 (Mark 16:2, 9; Luke
24:1; John 20:1, 19;1 Corinthians 16:2, Matthew 28:1)
• We and the early Christians met on the first day of the
week because: Sunday was the day of the Lord's
resurrection. The six post-resurrection appearances were
on Sunday. The Holy Spirit came on Sunday. We have been
freed from the Law!
• Colossians 2:16 Therefore no one is to act as your judge in
regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new
moon or a Sabbath day-- 17 things which are a mere shadow
of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ.

18. The Universal Seven Day Week Makes
Good Sense
• Don’t get me wrong, there are good biological
reasons to rest one day in seven.
• God designed us that way.
• God set the pattern.
• God commanded Israel, under the
theocracy, to keep the Sabbath.
19. The Universal Seven Day Week Makes
Good Sense
• But Saturday is not the only Sabbath;
• Bob Jones www.BibleFood.com says, “… there
were at least 64 "Sabbaths" in each calendar year.
Many weeks had multiple "Sabbaths", one a
seventh day Sabbath, the other a "Holy
Convocation", the first or last day of a feast.
Often, there were Sabbath days back to back two days in a row. And. probably just as often, a
Feast day Sabbath occurred the same day as the
seventh day Sabbath….” http://www.biblestudymanuals.net/sabbaths.htm
20. THE UNIVERSAL SEVEN DAY WEEK
Exodus 20:11, TODAY'S CREATION MOMENT
• Exodus 20:11 "For [in] six days the LORD made heaven and earth,
the sea, and all that in them [is], and rested the seventh day:
wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it."
• According to the Bible, God completed creation in six days and
rested on the seventh, thus setting the pattern for humans to
follow. If the Bible's account of creation is just a myth, or if the days
of Genesis 1 are figurative, why is the very fabric of human
existence tied to the seven day week?
• The Hebrew word shabah means "seven." It comes from the root
word which means full or complete. Not only is this word the
source of the word "Sabbath," it is also related to the word "seven"
in several languages, including English. Even
21. THE UNIVERSAL SEVEN DAY WEEK
Exodus 20:11, TODAY'S CREATION MOMENT
• the Chinese from ancient times have used the seven day week. The
seventh day of the first lunar month is still known among the
Chinese as the "birthday of mankind." In ancient India, Egypt, Rome
and Greece, the seven day week was standard. Exceptions are few
and far between.
• Science has also learned that one of our most basic biological cycles
is tied to the seven day week. Researchers found measurable
impairments in subjects who were denied one out of seven days for
rest. They also found that no amount of experimental coaxing could
change this built in seven day cycle to six or eight days.
• Evolutionary researchers admit that they do not know when the
seven day week started. But the origin of the seven day week is
clearly presented in Scripture. The seven day week shows that the
days in Genesis 1 are not make believe, nor are they figurative –
they are the revealed truth of God!
22. THE UNIVERSAL SEVEN DAY WEEK
Exodus 20:11, TODAY'S CREATION MOMENT
• Notes: Photo: Italian bracelet depicting the
Olympic gods representing the seven days of the
week.
23. Exodus 35:2, Keeping Sabbath
• Exodus 35:2 "For six days work may be done, but on
the seventh day you shall have a holy day, a sabbath
of complete rest to the LORD; whoever does any
work on it shall be put to death. 3 "You shall not
kindle a fire in any of your dwellings on the sabbath
day.“
• Don’t light the stove, turn up the thermostat, turn on
any lights, TV, etc., start your car, go or do anything.
