Mortal versus Venial Sin
www.ewtn.com
• “A serious, grave or mortal sin is the knowing and willful
violation of God's law in a serious matter, for example,
idolatry, adultery, murder, slander. …Venial sins are slight sins.
They do not break our friendship with God, although they
injure it. They involve disobedience of the law of God in slight
(venial) matters. If we gossip and destroy a person's
reputation it would be a mortal sin. However, normally gossip
is about trivial matters and only venially sinful. Additionally,
something that is otherwise a mortal sin (e.g. slander) may be
in a particular case only a venial sin. The person may have
acted without reflection or under force of habit. Thus, not fully
intending the action their guilt before God is reduced. It is
always good to remember, especially those who are trying to
be faithful but sometimes fall, that for mortal sin it must not
only be 1) serious matter, but 2) the person must know it is
serious and then 3) freely commit it….
Gal 5:19, Grave Sins/Venial Faults?
• Numbers 11:1 Now the people became like those who

• Or did you go back and start picking up your old garbage?
• Whatever was on that table, throw it before His feet!
• Galatians 6:14 But may it never be that I would boast,
except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which
the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. 15
For neither is circumcision anything, nor uncircumcision,

Tax Collectors And Sinners
• Matthew 9:11 When the Pharisees saw this, they
said to His disciples, "Why is your Teacher eating
with the tax collectors and sinners?“
• Luke 5:30-33 The Pharisees and their scribes
began grumbling at His disciples, saying, "Why do
you eat and drink with the tax collectors and
sinners?“…33 And they said to Him, "The disciples
of John often fast and offer prayers, the disciples
of the Pharisees also do the same, but Yours eat
and drink.“
Matt 9:13, Micah 6:6-8, Hosea 6:6
• Matt 9:13 But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy,
not sacrifice.' For I have not come to call the righteous, but
sinners."
• Micah 6:6 With what shall I come to the LORD And bow myself
before the God on high? Shall I come to Him with burnt
offerings, With yearling calves? 7 Does the LORD take delight in
thousands of rams, In ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I present
my firstborn for my rebellious acts, The fruit of my body for the
sin of my soul? 8 He has told you, O man, what is good; And
what does the LORD require of you But to do justice, to love
kindness, And to walk humbly with your God?
• Hosea 6:6 For I delight in loyalty rather than sacrifice, And in
the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings. But like
Adam they have transgressed the covenant; There they have
dealt treacherously against Me.

Matthew 9:14, Fasting
• Matthew 9:14 Then the disciples of John came to
Him, asking, "Why do we and the Pharisees fast,
but Your disciples do not fast?" 15 And Jesus said
to them, "The attendants of the bridegroom
cannot mourn as long as the bridegroom is with
them, can they? But the days will come when the
bridegroom is taken away from them, and then
they will fast.
• The only pertinent NT verses on fasting are
before Acts 15, and the introduction of gentiles…
Matthew 9:14, Fasting Is Jewish
• Matthew 17:21 "But this kind does not go out except
by prayer and fasting.”
• Acts 13:2 While they were ministering to the Lord and
fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for Me Barnabas
and Saul for the work to which I have called them.“3
Then, when they had fasted and prayed and laid their
hands on them, they sent them away.
• Acts 14:23 When they had appointed elders for them
in every church, having prayed with fasting, they
commended them to the Lord in whom they had
believed.
Matthew 9:16, New Wine / Old Cloth
• Matthew 9:16 "But no one puts a patch of
unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch
pulls away from the garment, and a worse tear
results. 17 "Nor do people put new wine into old
wineskins; otherwise the wineskins burst, and the
wine pours out and the wineskins are ruined; but
they put new wine into fresh wineskins, and both
are preserved.“

otherwise the wineskins burst, and the wine [oinos] pours out and the
wineskins are ruined; but they put new wine [oinos] into fresh
wineskins, and both are preserved.“

drinking no wine [oinos] , and you say, 'He has a demon!‘ 34 "The Son
of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, 'Behold, a
gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and
sinners!‘
• [oinos] used 5X’s in John 2:3-10… the mother of Jesus said to Him,
"They have no wine [oinos] ." … you have kept the good wine [oinos]

Matthew 9:17, Wine
• 1 Timothy 5:23 No longer drink water
exclusively, but use a little wine [oinos] for the
sake of your stomach and your frequent
ailments.
Matthew 9:17, Wine
• The Archaeological Study Bible on page 2015 under the
title, Wine In Alcoholic Beverages In The Ancient World.
Says… “Passages such as Hosea 4:11 make clear that
these wines were alcoholic and intoxicating; there is no
basis for suggesting that either the Greek or the
Hebrew terms for wine refer to unfermented grape
juice… Priests were not to drink wine while ministering
at the sanctuary (Lev 10:9), and ordinary people were
to avoid wine and grape products in any form while
under the restrictions of a Nazirite vow (Nur 6:4).
Other than these few exceptions, however, Biblical
references make it clear that wine was a common,
everyday part of a regular diet (Ge 14:18; 1Sa 16:20)."

Matthew 9:20, Blood =“unclean”
• Matthew 9:20 And a woman who had been
suffering from a hemorrhage for twelve years,

His cloak;
• Blood made her “unclean”, outcast, like us.
• Leviticus 15:19 'When a woman has a discharge,

golden bell and a pomegranate, a golden bell and a
pomegranate, upon the hem of the robe all around. 35 "And
it shall be upon Aaron when he ministers, and its sound will
be heard when he goes into the holy place before the LORD
and when he comes out, that he may not die.

Ruth your maid. So spread your covering over your
maid, for you are a close relative."
Matthew 9:20, The Hem=Authority
Matthew 9:20, The Hem=Authority
• NKJ Matthew 9:20…touched the hem of His garment.
• Chuck Missler says “In ancient Mesopotamia, "to cut
off for hem" was to strip one of his personality,
authority, etc. A husband could divorce his wife by
cutting off the hem of her robe. A nobleman would
authenticate his name on a clay tablet by pressing the
hem on the clay… In the wilderness of En Gedi; David
cut off the skirt of Saul's robe. The genealogy was
woven into the threads of the hem. David was
conscious stricken because he had personally
interrupted the lineage to the throne and symbolically
taken away the authority from the Lord's anointed.
Saul understood: 1Samuel 24:20. "
Matthew 9:18, Twelve Years
• NIV NAS NAU Matthew 9:18 While He was saying these things
to them, a synagogue official came and bowed down
before Him, and said, "My daughter has just died; but come
and lay Your hand on her, and she will live."
• Mark 5:42 Immediately the girl got up and began to walk,
for she was twelve years old.
• Luke 8:42...only daughter, about twelve years old, and she
was dying….43 And a woman who had a hemorrhage for
twelve years…
• She obviously was a Gentile because she was still out in a
crowd even though bleeding.
• You mean to tell me that on the way to heal a Jewish girl
the gentile woman was healed along the way? Zech 9:9
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O
daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you…
Matthew 9:28, Seek Him?
• Matthew 9:27 As Jesus went on from there, two
blind men followed Him, crying out, "Have mercy
on us, Son of David!"
• Matthew 9:28 When He entered the house, the
blind men came up to Him, and Jesus said to
them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?"
They said to Him, "Yes, Lord."
• Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible
to please Him, for he who comes to God must
believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of
those who seek Him.
Matthew 7:8, Does Anyone Really Seek
After God?
• John 6:37 "All that the Father gives Me will
come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I
will certainly not cast out.
• John 6:44 "No one can come to Me unless the
Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise
him up on the last day.
Matthew 7:8, Seeks After God?
• Matthew 7:8 "For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks
finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.
• Psalm 53:2 God has looked down from heaven upon the sons of
men To see if there is anyone who understands, Who seeks after
God… 3 Every one of them has turned aside; together they have
become corrupt; There is no one who does good, not even one.
• Lamentations 3:25 The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, To
the person who seeks Him.
• John 4:23 …such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers.
• 1 Chronicles 28:9…the LORD searches all hearts, and understands
every intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will let you find
Him; but if you forsake Him, He will reject you forever.
• Psalm 40:16 Let all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You…
• If God calls them, they seek Him, will He give them hell?
Matthew 7:8, Seeks After God?
• Matthew 6:33 "But seek first His kingdom and His
righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
• Acts 15:17 SO THAT THE REST OF MANKIND MAY SEEK THE
LORD, AND ALL THE GENTILES WHO ARE CALLED BY MY
NAME,‘
• Acts 17:27 that they would seek God, if perhaps they might
grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each
one of us;
• Romans 10:20 And Isaiah is very bold and says, "I WAS
FOUND BY THOSE WHO DID NOT SEEK ME, I BECAME
MANIFEST TO THOSE WHO DID NOT ASK FOR ME.“
• Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please
Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and
that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.
Matthew 9:30, Keep Quiet!, Is A
Different “oikonomia”
• Matthew 9:30 And their eyes were opened. And Jesus
sternly warned them, saying, "See here, let no one know
about this!“
• “So they went out and told no man.”
• 31 But they went out, and spread the news about Him in all
that land.
• I find that everyone that is truly “healed” by Jesus wants to
tell everyone they know.
• This is a different “oikonomia” than the church
age, Matthew 16:20 Then He warned the disciples that they
should tell no one that He was the Christ. [Matthew
10:5, 11:11, 16:20, 28:19, Luke 16:16, Mark 8:29, John 14:17]
• Keep Quiet!, Matthew 8:4, 9:30, 16:20, Mark 5:43, 8:29
Matthew 9:32-34
Matthew 9:32-34, Dumb Man, Demon-
possessed
• Matthew 9:32 And as they were going out, behold, a
dumb man, demon-possessed, was brought to Him. 33
And after the demon was cast out, the dumb man
spoke; and the multitudes marveled, saying, "Nothing
like this was ever seen in Israel." 34 But the Pharisees
were saying, "He casts out the demons by the ruler of
the demons.“
• Matthew 12:27 "If I by Beelzebul cast out demons, by
whom do your sons cast them out?...
• The Jews had to get the demons to identify himself, by
giving it’s name, before casting them out. Jesus didn’t
need the demons name!
Matt 9:32-33, Demonic Possession? GotQuestions.org
• The Bible gives some examples of people possessed or influenced by demons.
From these examples we can find some symptoms of demonic influence and
gain insight as to how a demon possesses someone. Here are some of the
biblical passages: Matthew 9:32-33; 12:22; 17:18; Mark 5:1-20; 7:26-30; Luke
4:33-36; Luke 22:3; Acts 16:16-18. In some of these passages, the demon
possession causes physical ailments such as inability to speak, epileptic
symptoms, blindness, etc. In other cases, it causes the individual to do evil,
Judas being the main example. In Acts 16:16-18, the spirit apparently gives a
slave girl some ability to know things beyond her own learning. The demon-
possessed man of the Gadarenes, who was possessed by a multitude of demons
In addition to these physical or emotional distinctions, one can also look at
spiritual attributes showing demonic influence. These may include a refusal to
forgive (2 Corinthians 2:10-11) and the belief in and spread of false doctrine,
especially concerning Jesus Christ and His atoning work (2 Corinthians 11:3-4,
13-15; 1 Timothy 4:1-5; 1 John 4:1-3)…”
Matt 9:32-33, Demonic Possession? GotQuestions.org
• (Legion), had superhuman strength and lived naked among the tombstones.
King Saul, after rebelling against the LORD, was troubled by an evil spirit (1
Samuel 16:14-15; 18:10-11; 19:9-10) with the apparent effect of a depressed
mood and an increased desire to kill David.
Thus, there is a wide variety of possible symptoms of demon possession, such
as a physical impairment that cannot be attributed to an actual physiological
problem, a personality change such as depression or aggression, supernatural
strength, immodesty, antisocial behavior, and perhaps the ability to share
information that one has no natural way of knowing. It is important to note that
nearly all, if not all, of these characteristics may have other explanations, so it is
important not to label every depressed person or epileptic individual as demon-
possessed. On the other hand, Western cultures probably do not take satanic
involvement in people’s lives seriously enough.
Matt 9:32-33, Demonic Possession? GotQuestions.org
• In addition to these physical or emotional distinctions, one can also look at
spiritual attributes showing demonic influence. These may include a refusal to
forgive (2 Corinthians 2:10-11) and the belief in and spread of false doctrine,
especially concerning Jesus Christ and His atoning work (2 Corinthians 11:3-4, 13-
15; 1 Timothy 4:1-5; 1 John 4:1-3)…”
• …Scripture repeatedly relates idol worship to the actual worship of demons
(Leviticus 17:7; Deuteronomy 32:17; Psalm 106:37; 1 Corinthians 10:20), so it
should not be surprising that involvement with idolatry could lead to demon
possession. Based on the above scriptural passages and some of the experiences
of missionaries, we can conclude that many people open their lives up to demon
involvement through the embracing of some sin or through cultic involvement
(either knowingly or unknowingly). Examples may includeimmorality, drug/alcohol
abuse that alters one’s state of consciousness, rebellion, bitterness, and
transcendental meditation. There is an additional consideration. Satan and his evil
host can do nothing the Lord does not allow them to do (Job 1-2). This being the
case, Satan, thinking he is accomplishing his own purposes, is actually
accomplishing God’s good purposes

LORD said to you, 'You will shepherd My people
Israel, and you will be a ruler over Israel.'" 3 So all the
elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King
David made a covenant with them before the LORD at
Hebron; then they anointed David king over Israel.
Matthew 9:37, Pray For Harvesters

Turn with me this morning to the 23rd Psalm, perhaps one of the best loved passages in the Bible. We often read it in times of stress or sorrow.
•
• But I would like you to see it in a slightly different way this morning. Now that we're in the fall season & Thanksgiving, I'd like you to see in this Psalm three great reasons for us to be
thankful unto God.
•
• The 23rd Psalm begins with these familiar words, "The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not be in want."
•
• When someone says, "I shall not be in want," we need to sit up & take notice because this is an age of discontent. Listen to these words by Jason Lehman:
•
• It was spring. But it was summer I wanted
The warm days, & the great outdoors.
It was summer. But it was fall I wanted
The colorful leaves, & the cool, dry air.
It was fall. But it was winter I wanted
The beautiful snow, & the joy of the holiday season.
It was winter. But it was spring I wanted
The warmth, & the blossoming of nature.

• I was a child. But it was adulthood I wanted
The freedom, & the respect.
I was 20. But it was 30 I wanted
To be mature, & sophisticated.
I was middle aged. But it was 20 I wanted
The youth, & the free spirit.
I was retired. But it was middle age I wanted
The presence of mind, without limitations.
Then my life was over, & I never got what I wanted.
•
• Many people never seem satisfied, & almost everybody wants more. A little child wants more toys & more television time. A teenager wants more freedom & more popularity. Most
adults want more possessions & more leisure time. And as we age, we want more health, more friends, & more loyalty from our children.
•
• Yet, listen again to these words of the Apostle Paul that we looked at last Sunday, "I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, & I know
what it is to have plenty.
•
• "I have learned the secret of being content in any & every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want" (Philippians 4:11 12).
•
• Obviously, God wants us to be a happy, satisfied people. We shouldn't be restless & jealous, always chafing about what we don't have. There should be a spirit of thankfulness in us that
brands us as belonging to Him.
•
• So with the 23rd Psalm in mind, notice 3 great reasons to be thankful.
•
• IN THIS LIFE THE GOOD SHEPHERD GIVES US ALL WE NEED
Mark 5:1-20 Luke 4:33-36 Acts 16:16-18 1 Samuel 16:14-15
2 Corinthians 1:22; 5:5 Leviticus 17:7; Deuteronomy 32:17; Psalm
106:37 Matthew 9:32-33, Demonic Possession?
• Question: "What does the Bible say about demon possession / demonic possession?"
Answer: The Bible gives some examples of people possessed or influenced by demons. From these examples we can find some symptoms of demonic influence and gain insight as to how
a demon possesses someone. Here are some of the biblical passages: Matthew 9:32-33; 12:22; 17:18; Mark 5:1-20; 7:26-30; Luke 4:33-36; Luke 22:3; Acts 16:16-18. In some of these
passages, the demon possession causes physical ailments such as inability to speak, epileptic symptoms, blindness, etc. In other cases, it causes the individual to do evil, Judas being the
main example. In Acts 16:16-18, the spirit apparently gives a slave girl some ability to know things beyond her own learning. The demon-possessed man of the Gadarenes, who was
possessed by a multitude of demons (Legion), had superhuman strength and lived naked among the tombstones. King Saul, after rebelling against the LORD, was troubled by an evil spirit
(1 Samuel 16:14-15; 18:10-11; 19:9-10) with the apparent effect of a depressed mood and an increased desire to kill David.
Thus, there is a wide variety of possible symptoms of demon possession, such as a physical impairment that cannot be attributed to an actual physiological problem, a personality change
such as depression or aggression, supernatural strength, immodesty, antisocial behavior, and perhaps the ability to share information that one has no natural way of knowing. It is
important to note that nearly all, if not all, of these characteristics may have other explanations, so it is important not to label every depressed person or epileptic individual as demon-
possessed. On the other hand, Western cultures probably do not take satanic involvement in people’s lives seriously enough.
In addition to these physical or emotional distinctions, one can also look at spiritual attributes showing demonic influence. These may include a refusal to forgive (2 Corinthians 2:10-11)
and the belief in and spread of false doctrine, especially concerning Jesus Christ and His atoning work (2 Corinthians 11:3-4, 13-15; 1 Timothy 4:1-5; 1 John 4:1-3).
Concerning the involvement of demons in the lives of Christians, the apostle Peter is an illustration of the fact that a believer can be influenced by the devil (Matthew 16:23). Some refer
to Christians who are under a strong demonic influence as being “demonized,” but never is there an example in Scripture of a believer in Christ being possessed by a demon. Most
theologians believe that a Christian cannot be possessed because he has the Holy Spirit abiding within (2 Corinthians 1:22; 5:5; 1 Corinthians 6:19), and the Spirit of God would not share
residence with a demon.
We are not told exactly how one opens himself up for possession. If Judas’ case is representative, he opened his heart to evil—in his case by his greed (John 12:6). So it may be possible
that if one allows his heart to be ruled by some habitual sin, it becomes an invitation for a demon to enter. From missionaries’ experiences, demon possession also seems to be related to
the worship of heathen idols and the possession of occult materials. Scripture repeatedly relates idol worship to the actual worship of demons (Leviticus 17:7; Deuteronomy 32:17; Psalm
106:37; 1 Corinthians 10:20), so it should not be surprising that involvement with idolatry could lead to demon possession.
Based on the above scriptural passages and some of the experiences of missionaries, we can conclude that many people open their lives up to demon involvement through the embracing
of some sin or through cultic involvement (either knowingly or unknowingly). Examples may include immorality, drug/alcohol abuse that alters one’s state of consciousness, rebellion,
bitterness, and transcendental meditation.
There is an additional consideration. Satan and his evil host can do nothing the Lord does not allow them to do (Job 1-2). This being the case, Satan, thinking he is accomplishing his own
purposes, is actually accomplishing God’s good purposes, as in the case of Judas’ betrayal. Some people develop an unhealthy fascination with the occult and demonic activity. This is
unwise and unbiblical. If we pursue God, if we are clothing ourselves with His armor and relying upon His strength (Ephesians 6:10-18), we have nothing to fear from the evil ones, for
God rules over all!

  • 20. Mortal versus Venial Sin www.ewtn.com • “A serious, grave or mortal sin is the knowing and willful violation of God's law in a serious matter, for example, idolatry, adultery, murder, slander. …Venial sins are slight sins. They do not break our friendship with God, although they injure it. They involve disobedience of the law of God in slight (venial) matters. If we gossip and destroy a person's reputation it would be a mortal sin. However, normally gossip is about trivial matters and only venially sinful. Additionally, something that is otherwise a mortal sin (e.g. slander) may be in a particular case only a venial sin. The person may have acted without reflection or under force of habit. Thus, not fully intending the action their guilt before God is reduced. It is always good to remember, especially those who are trying to be faithful but sometimes fall, that for mortal sin it must not only be 1) serious matter, but 2) the person must know it is serious and then 3) freely commit it….

  • 32. Matthew 9:14, Fasting Is Jewish • Matthew 17:21 "But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.” • Acts 13:2 While they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.“3 Then, when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them away. • Acts 14:23 When they had appointed elders for them in every church, having prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord in whom they had believed.

Word, Usage: wine(33), wine*(1). • [oinos] used 4X’s in Mark 2:22, 3X’s in Luke 5:37-38 • Luke 7:33 "For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine [oinos] , and you say, 'He has a demon!‘ 34 "The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, 'Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!‘ • [oinos] used 5X’s in John 2:3-10… the mother of Jesus said to Him, "They have no wine [oinos] ." … you have kept the good wine [oinos] until now.

  • 37. Matthew 9:17, Wine • The Archaeological Study Bible on page 2015 under the title, Wine In Alcoholic Beverages In The Ancient World. Says… “Passages such as Hosea 4:11 make clear that these wines were alcoholic and intoxicating; there is no basis for suggesting that either the Greek or the Hebrew terms for wine refer to unfermented grape juice… Priests were not to drink wine while ministering at the sanctuary (Lev 10:9), and ordinary people were to avoid wine and grape products in any form while under the restrictions of a Nazirite vow (Nur 6:4). Other than these few exceptions, however, Biblical references make it clear that wine was a common, everyday part of a regular diet (Ge 14:18; 1Sa 16:20)."
  • 39. Matthew 9:20, Blood =“unclean” • Matthew 9:20 And a woman who had been suffering from a hemorrhage for twelve years, came up behind Him and touched the fringe of His cloak; • Blood made her “unclean”, outcast, like us. • Leviticus 15:19 'When a woman has a discharge, if her discharge in her body is blood, she shall continue in her menstrual impurity for seven days; and whoever touches her shall be unclean until evening.
  • 40. Matthew 9:20, The Hem=Authority • NKJ Matthew 9:20…touched the hem of His garment. • Exodus 28:29…Aaron…31 …make the robe of the ephod all of blue…33 "And upon its hem you shall make pomegranates of blue, purple, and scarlet, all around its hem, and bells of gold between them all around: 34 "a golden bell and a pomegranate, a golden bell and a pomegranate, upon the hem of the robe all around. 35 "And it shall be upon Aaron when he ministers, and its sound will be heard when he goes into the holy place before the LORD and when he comes out, that he may not die. • Ruth 3:9 He said, "Who are you?" And she answered, "I am Ruth your maid. So spread your covering over your maid, for you are a close relative."
  • 41. Matthew 9:20, The Hem=Authority
  • 42. Matthew 9:20, The Hem=Authority • NKJ Matthew 9:20…touched the hem of His garment. • Chuck Missler says “In ancient Mesopotamia, "to cut off for hem" was to strip one of his personality, authority, etc. A husband could divorce his wife by cutting off the hem of her robe. A nobleman would authenticate his name on a clay tablet by pressing the hem on the clay… In the wilderness of En Gedi; David cut off the skirt of Saul's robe. The genealogy was woven into the threads of the hem. David was conscious stricken because he had personally interrupted the lineage to the throne and symbolically taken away the authority from the Lord's anointed. Saul understood: 1Samuel 24:20. "
  • 43. Matthew 9:18, Twelve Years • NIV NAS NAU Matthew 9:18 While He was saying these things to them, a synagogue official came and bowed down before Him, and said, "My daughter has just died; but come and lay Your hand on her, and she will live." • Mark 5:42 Immediately the girl got up and began to walk, for she was twelve years old. • Luke 8:42...only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying….43 And a woman who had a hemorrhage for twelve years… • She obviously was a Gentile because she was still out in a crowd even though bleeding. • You mean to tell me that on the way to heal a Jewish girl the gentile woman was healed along the way? Zech 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you…
  • 44. Matthew 9:28, Seek Him? • Matthew 9:27 As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed Him, crying out, "Have mercy on us, Son of David!" • Matthew 9:28 When He entered the house, the blind men came up to Him, and Jesus said to them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?" They said to Him, "Yes, Lord." • Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.
  • 45. Matthew 7:8, Does Anyone Really Seek After God? • John 6:37 "All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out. • John 6:44 "No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day.
  • 46. Matthew 7:8, Seeks After God? • Matthew 7:8 "For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. • Psalm 53:2 God has looked down from heaven upon the sons of men To see if there is anyone who understands, Who seeks after God… 3 Every one of them has turned aside; together they have become corrupt; There is no one who does good, not even one. • Lamentations 3:25 The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, To the person who seeks Him. • John 4:23 …such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. • 1 Chronicles 28:9…the LORD searches all hearts, and understands every intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will let you find Him; but if you forsake Him, He will reject you forever. • Psalm 40:16 Let all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You… • If God calls them, they seek Him, will He give them hell?
  • 47. Matthew 7:8, Seeks After God? • Matthew 6:33 "But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. • Acts 15:17 SO THAT THE REST OF MANKIND MAY SEEK THE LORD, AND ALL THE GENTILES WHO ARE CALLED BY MY NAME,‘ • Acts 17:27 that they would seek God, if perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; • Romans 10:20 And Isaiah is very bold and says, "I WAS FOUND BY THOSE WHO DID NOT SEEK ME, I BECAME MANIFEST TO THOSE WHO DID NOT ASK FOR ME.“ • Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.
  • 48. Matthew 9:30, Keep Quiet!, Is A Different “oikonomia” • Matthew 9:30 And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, saying, "See here, let no one know about this!“ • “So they went out and told no man.” • 31 But they went out, and spread the news about Him in all that land. • I find that everyone that is truly “healed” by Jesus wants to tell everyone they know. • This is a different “oikonomia” than the church age, Matthew 16:20 Then He warned the disciples that they should tell no one that He was the Christ. [Matthew 10:5, 11:11, 16:20, 28:19, Luke 16:16, Mark 8:29, John 14:17] • Keep Quiet!, Matthew 8:4, 9:30, 16:20, Mark 5:43, 8:29
  • 50. Matthew 9:32-34, Dumb Man, Demon- possessed • Matthew 9:32 And as they were going out, behold, a dumb man, demon-possessed, was brought to Him. 33 And after the demon was cast out, the dumb man spoke; and the multitudes marveled, saying, "Nothing like this was ever seen in Israel." 34 But the Pharisees were saying, "He casts out the demons by the ruler of the demons.“ • Matthew 12:27 "If I by Beelzebul cast out demons, by whom do your sons cast them out?... • The Jews had to get the demons to identify himself, by giving it’s name, before casting them out. Jesus didn’t need the demons name!
  • 51. Matt 9:32-33, Demonic Possession? GotQuestions.org • The Bible gives some examples of people possessed or influenced by demons. From these examples we can find some symptoms of demonic influence and gain insight as to how a demon possesses someone. Here are some of the biblical passages: Matthew 9:32-33; 12:22; 17:18; Mark 5:1-20; 7:26-30; Luke 4:33-36; Luke 22:3; Acts 16:16-18. In some of these passages, the demon possession causes physical ailments such as inability to speak, epileptic symptoms, blindness, etc. In other cases, it causes the individual to do evil, Judas being the main example. In Acts 16:16-18, the spirit apparently gives a slave girl some ability to know things beyond her own learning. The demon- possessed man of the Gadarenes, who was possessed by a multitude of demons In addition to these physical or emotional distinctions, one can also look at spiritual attributes showing demonic influence. These may include a refusal to forgive (2 Corinthians 2:10-11) and the belief in and spread of false doctrine, especially concerning Jesus Christ and His atoning work (2 Corinthians 11:3-4, 13-15; 1 Timothy 4:1-5; 1 John 4:1-3)…”
  • 52. Matt 9:32-33, Demonic Possession? GotQuestions.org • (Legion), had superhuman strength and lived naked among the tombstones. King Saul, after rebelling against the LORD, was troubled by an evil spirit (1 Samuel 16:14-15; 18:10-11; 19:9-10) with the apparent effect of a depressed mood and an increased desire to kill David. Thus, there is a wide variety of possible symptoms of demon possession, such as a physical impairment that cannot be attributed to an actual physiological problem, a personality change such as depression or aggression, supernatural strength, immodesty, antisocial behavior, and perhaps the ability to share information that one has no natural way of knowing. It is important to note that nearly all, if not all, of these characteristics may have other explanations, so it is important not to label every depressed person or epileptic individual as demon- possessed. On the other hand, Western cultures probably do not take satanic involvement in people’s lives seriously enough.
  • 53. Matt 9:32-33, Demonic Possession? GotQuestions.org • In addition to these physical or emotional distinctions, one can also look at spiritual attributes showing demonic influence. These may include a refusal to forgive (2 Corinthians 2:10-11) and the belief in and spread of false doctrine, especially concerning Jesus Christ and His atoning work (2 Corinthians 11:3-4, 13- 15; 1 Timothy 4:1-5; 1 John 4:1-3)…” • …Scripture repeatedly relates idol worship to the actual worship of demons (Leviticus 17:7; Deuteronomy 32:17; Psalm 106:37; 1 Corinthians 10:20), so it should not be surprising that involvement with idolatry could lead to demon possession. Based on the above scriptural passages and some of the experiences of missionaries, we can conclude that many people open their lives up to demon involvement through the embracing of some sin or through cultic involvement (either knowingly or unknowingly). Examples may includeimmorality, drug/alcohol abuse that alters one’s state of consciousness, rebellion, bitterness, and transcendental meditation. There is an additional consideration. Satan and his evil host can do nothing the Lord does not allow them to do (Job 1-2). This being the case, Satan, thinking he is accomplishing his own purposes, is actually accomplishing God’s good purposes

  • 60. 2:15 Psalm 32:6-7 Philippians 4:11 12 Isaiah 53:6 1 Corinthians 10:13 Matthew 9:36, The Lord is my Shepherd• The Lord Is My Shepherd • • By Melvin Newland • • Turn with me this morning to the 23rd Psalm, perhaps one of the best loved passages in the Bible. We often read it in times of stress or sorrow. • • But I would like you to see it in a slightly different way this morning. Now that we're in the fall season & Thanksgiving, I'd like you to see in this Psalm three great reasons for us to be thankful unto God. • • The 23rd Psalm begins with these familiar words, "The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not be in want." • • When someone says, "I shall not be in want," we need to sit up & take notice because this is an age of discontent. Listen to these words by Jason Lehman: • • It was spring. But it was summer I wanted The warm days, & the great outdoors. It was summer. But it was fall I wanted The colorful leaves, & the cool, dry air. It was fall. But it was winter I wanted The beautiful snow, & the joy of the holiday season. It was winter. But it was spring I wanted The warmth, & the blossoming of nature. • • I was a child. But it was adulthood I wanted The freedom, & the respect. I was 20. But it was 30 I wanted To be mature, & sophisticated. I was middle aged. But it was 20 I wanted The youth, & the free spirit. I was retired. But it was middle age I wanted The presence of mind, without limitations. Then my life was over, & I never got what I wanted. • • Many people never seem satisfied, & almost everybody wants more. A little child wants more toys & more television time. A teenager wants more freedom & more popularity. Most adults want more possessions & more leisure time. And as we age, we want more health, more friends, & more loyalty from our children. • • Yet, listen again to these words of the Apostle Paul that we looked at last Sunday, "I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, & I know what it is to have plenty. • • "I have learned the secret of being content in any & every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want" (Philippians 4:11 12). • • Obviously, God wants us to be a happy, satisfied people. We shouldn't be restless & jealous, always chafing about what we don't have. There should be a spirit of thankfulness in us that brands us as belonging to Him. • • So with the 23rd Psalm in mind, notice 3 great reasons to be thankful. • • IN THIS LIFE THE GOOD SHEPHERD GIVES US ALL WE NEED
  • 61. Mark 5:1-20 Luke 4:33-36 Acts 16:16-18 1 Samuel 16:14-15 2 Corinthians 1:22; 5:5 Leviticus 17:7; Deuteronomy 32:17; Psalm 106:37 Matthew 9:32-33, Demonic Possession? • Question: "What does the Bible say about demon possession / demonic possession?" Answer: The Bible gives some examples of people possessed or influenced by demons. The demon-possessed man of the Gadarenes, who was possessed by a multitude of demons (Legion), had superhuman strength and lived naked among the tombstones. In addition to these physical or emotional distinctions, one can also look at spiritual attributes showing demonic influence. These may include a refusal to forgive (2 Corinthians 2:10-11) and the belief in and spread of false doctrine, especially concerning Jesus Christ and His atoning work (2 Corinthians 11:3-4, 13-15; 1 Timothy 4:1-5; 1 John 4:1-3). Concerning the involvement of demons in the lives of Christians, the apostle Peter is an illustration of the fact that a believer can be influenced by the devil (Matthew 16:23). Some refer to Christians who are under a strong demonic influence as being “demonized,” but never is there an example in Scripture of a believer in Christ being possessed by a demon. Most theologians believe that a Christian cannot be possessed because he has the Holy Spirit abiding within (2 Corinthians 1:22; 5:5; 1 Corinthians 6:19), and the Spirit of God would not share residence with a demon. We are not told exactly how one opens himself up for possession. If Judas’ case is representative, he opened his heart to evil—in his case by his greed (John 12:6). So it may be possible that if one allows his heart to be ruled by some habitual sin, it becomes an invitation for a demon to enter. From missionaries’ experiences, demon possession also seems to be related to the worship of heathen idols and the possession of occult materials. Scripture repeatedly relates idol worship to the actual worship of demons (Leviticus 17:7; Deuteronomy 32:17; Psalm 106:37; 1 Corinthians 10:20), so it should not be surprising that involvement with idolatry could lead to demon possession. Based on the above scriptural passages and some of the experiences of missionaries, we can conclude that many people open their lives up to demon involvement through the embracing of some sin or through cultic involvement (either knowingly or unknowingly). Examples may include immorality, drug/alcohol abuse that alters one’s state of consciousness, rebellion, bitterness, and transcendental meditation. There is an additional consideration. Satan and his evil host can do nothing the Lord does not allow them to do (Job 1-2). This being the case, Satan, thinking he is accomplishing his own purposes, is actually accomplishing God’s good purposes, as in the case of Judas’ betrayal. Some people develop an unhealthy fascination with the occult and demonic activity. This is unwise and unbiblical. If we pursue God, if we are clothing ourselves with His armor and relying upon His strength (Ephesians 6:10-18), we have nothing to fear from the evil ones, for God rules over all!
