Before Reading Activities- First, I will introduce the book to the students. I will read the title to them. I will ask them if they think animals should wear clothes. I will point out the author of the book. I will ask them what an author is and what they do. Then I will point out the illustrator of the book. I will ask them what the illustrator of a book does. I will call on students to share any stories they have that may have to do with the title of the book. For example, I will ask them if they have ever seen an animal with clothes on. Then I will open the book and have them look at a few pictures and ask them what they think the book is going to be about. I will introduce new vocabulary words. For my ESOL modification I will have a board behind me with the vocabulary words written very large and clear. While I am going over the vocabulary I will make sure to go very slow and use a lot of expression to make it easier for my ELLs to understand. During Reading Activities- While we are reading I will ask questions through the readings. For example, why would it be a bad idea for a porcupine to wear clothes? I will let a few students answer. Then I will go the next page and ask another question related to the picture or the reading. For example, where do you wear a hat? This book is full of great pictures that you can come up with really good questions. There is a picture with a sheep in a sweater. I can ask them in what kind of weather would you have to wear a sweater? Do you wear on when it is hot outside? I will give them turns to read out loud. I will have them follow along with the readings. In my internship class the students will snap their fingers when they hear a vocabulary word that they are learning right now. I really like this idea so I will have my students do the same thing. This helps them notice important words and keep them paying attention during the readings. You can also tell who is paying attentions by hearing all the snaps. For my ESOL modifications I will have different props for my students. I will bring in different articles of clothing and while we are reading that word I will show my students the prop and state what it is. After Reading Activities- First, I will go over our predictions and see if they are right. I will go over the vocabulary words we learned and add any new words we came up with to the list on the board that I made for the ELLs. I will have them pick out their favorite animal from the story and make a paper bag puppet out of it. I will bring in different fabrics for them to use so they can put clothes on their animal if they want. If they do not want to put clothes on their animal they do not have to. I will then have them write in their journals about the animal they chose and explain why or why not they chose to put clothes on it. After they are done with their puppets I will let them have their own puppet show. For my ESOL modification I will pair my ELLs with each other.
