Notas del editor

  1. Articulate – a rapid e-learning tool. The Good. The Bad. The Beautiful.
  2. All of you created an e-lesson, what technology did you use to create and publish your lesson?
  3. I sent out a couple of links for lessons that were created in Articulate.
  4. Adam Schwartz, CEO, founded the company in 2002 with a vision to create innovative tools. Even non-technical users (like me) can create interactive e-learning courses with ease and speed.
  5. It’s not Free. I just wanted to get that over with. Articulate has 4 products that they bundle to create Studio Pro and Studio Standard. They also provide a learning management system for a monthly fee. It doesn’t appear that ‘closed captioning’ is available for Articulate.
  6. Articulate claims to have more than 15,000 organizations in 115 countriesusing Articulate's intuitive technologies to create powerful e-learning. Articulate partners with LINGOs (a consortium of humanitarian relief and development organizations) to provide training throughout the world. Articulate is also going GREEN and is committed to being a carbon-neutral organization.
  7. Presenter is an add-on to PowerPoint and imbeds itself into PowerPoint, which is a feature that makes it really easy to use. As Andy discovered, it doesn’t seem to work with other products so PowerPoint is required. Create your PPT presentation, use the PPT animations then, using Presenter you can add voice over easily, create branches for students to follow when they need more depth about a subject, or to skip part of the presentation. The navigation is also robust so that the learner can move to a specific slide or read all of the text.
  8. Quizmaker allows you to create quizzes and surveys. Question pools can be randomized. Branching allows you to take learners down different paths depending on how they answered questions. Instructors can give specific feedback to the learners based on how they answer a question. You can also get the quiz results through email or your Learning Management System. Quizzes can be integrated with Presenter to embed the quizzes in your lesson.
  9. Engage allows you to create interactivity using a variety of templates. As Andy pointed out to me, I probably should have used Engage rather than presenter as the interactivity is much more robust. Engage allows branching to allow learners to skip to specific instructions or link related items. A summary screen makes it easy to reinforce key points. Learners can stop and resume a lesson where they left off. Audio editing is available. Engage has layers and segments to assist with the design of interactivity.
  10. Video Encoder allows you to add full-motion video to your Articulate content. You can convert almost any video into the popular .FLV Flash video format, and easily trim, crop, and polish while you're at it. Video Encoder allows you to record video directly from your web cam.
  11. There is a lot of support at Articulate. The Rapid e-learning blog is worth checking out for tips on e-learning design in general. Tutorials are available for each of the products. The tutorials are generally less than 5 minutes on a variety of topics for each product. The community forums provide a venue to search for information covering a specific issue.
  12. The eLearning Guild published AUTHORING & DEVELOPMENT TOOLS – Selecting, combining, and using the best tools for the best results: 01/11/2008 . Their surveys showed that the 3 most important factors for elearning tools 1) allowed content to be updated 2) the learning curve is low 3)the product will output to a Flash file.
  13. This report also finds that the top 3 important support factors are that the tool is in widespread use, it offers free online forums for support and free technical support. Articulate ranked fairly high in all of these factors.
  14. If I can use it – anyone can! I asked Jack how he uses Articulate and what he likes about it. Jack told me that he uses Articulate for little bitsy activities that he uploads into his lessons or for specific activities that call for step-by-step instruction. It’s good for faculty who are just getting into using technology to produce online lessons. Most of them are able to use PowerPoint and Articulate is an easy next step. It’s very easy to record and sync animations. Jack also likes the ability to roll it into a FLASH file.
  15. Any questions?
