US Expatriate Tax Guide:
Who is required to file a US Tax Return?
• All US Citizens and green card holders are required to file a Federal Tax
return each year if their income is over the minimum threshold.
• It doesn’t matter if you earn your income in the USA or abroad and it
doesn’t matter if you pay taxes locally.
• The thresholds are currently:
– Single with income over $8,950
– Married filing jointly with income over $17,900
– Married filing separately with income over $3,500

What are the filing deadlines?
• April 15th is the tax deadline in the USA, it is also when any taxes you
owe are due to the US Government (after April 15th you will need to pay
interest on any taxes owed)
• June 15th is the US tax deadline for Americans living abroad
• October 15th is the final date you can file an extension until. To file an
extension you will need to complete Form 4868 which you can do on line
(for instructions please visit our FAQ’s)

What is the Foreign Bank Account Form?
• If you have over $10,000 or the equivalent in a foreign bank account you
must report it to the US Treasury. To be exact a “US Person” defined as a
citizen or resident of the US, a domestic partnership, a domestic
corporation, or a domestic estate or trust, must report this each year or
face stiff fines and potential jail time.
• To report this money you need to complete Form TDF 90-22-1 by June
30th. Even if you get an extension for your tax return you will not get an
extension for this Form.
• If you don’t file the Foreign Accounts Form you may face both fines and
potential jail time so please insure you file this form. Help in completing
Form TD F 90-22.1 online at IRS.gov. Questions regarding the FBAR can
be sent to FBARquestions@irs.gov.”
