2. Introduction
A successful attorney, Donald Harwood is co-founder and partner at
Harwood Reiff LLC in New York City. Attorney Donald Harwood’s
experience includes executive producing an independent film as well
as handling the film’s various legal requirements to set the project in
motion. The movie, Frozen River, written and directed by his wife,
Courtney Hunt, was released by Sony Pictures Classics in 2008.
Frozen River is set in the days before Christmas in upstate New York
near the Canadian border. Ray Eddy’s (Melissa Leo) husband has
just gambled away their savings and deserted the family. She
befriends Lila Littlewolf from the Mohawk tribe, whose reservation
spans the frozen St. Lawrence River.
In desperate need of money, Ray joins Lila in smuggling illegal
Chinese and Pakistani immigrants into the US. From Canada, Ray
drives over the frozen river to the US side of the border with the
illegal aliens hiding in her car’s trunk. Frozen River was nominated
for best original screenplay (Hunt), and best actress (Leo) at the
Academy Awards, awarded the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance
Film Festival, and awarded best film at the Stockholm Film Festival.
