1) The study compared outcomes of severely head injured patients who received early enteral nutrition within 48 hours of injury versus those who received delayed enteral nutrition based on current practices. 2) Patients who received early enteral nutrition had a significantly lower rate of poor outcomes (61.1% vs 100%) and higher rate of good outcomes (35.3% vs 0%) compared to the delayed nutrition group. 3) The study concludes that early and appropriate nutritional support can improve outcomes for severely head injured patients possibly by decreasing infections and preventing multiple organ failure.

- Systemic inflammatory responses to severe trauma and surgical illnesses may be partly responsible for numerous complications, including sepsis, multiple organ failure and unregulated hypermetabolism leading to protein-calorie malnutrition.
- The integrity of the gastrointestinal tract appears to be an important factor in the pathogenesis of the systemic inflammatory response and sepsis.
