What is Europeana?
Europeana is the European Commission's digital platform
for cultural heritage. Through Europeana, citizens and the
Cultural and Creative Industries (CCIs) can access
European culture for the widest possible variety of
purposes.
Europeana gives access to over 53 million items including
image, text, sound, video and 3D material from the
collections of over 3 700 libraries, archives, museums,
galleries and audio-visual collections across Europe.

Benefits of Europeana Aggregation
Europe-wide exposure for your content
Showcasing of your materials in themed Europeana
outputs including Galleries, Blogs, Exhibitions and more
Position your content in a European context, among similar
or related content from many other Institutes

Europeana Common Culture
The Europeana Common Culture project is a CEF action
funded by the European Commission
The project will see the re-establishment of a National
Europeana Aggregation service for Ireland using the DRI
platform
Some of you may already have aggregated to Europeana
via a different aggregator, soon you you will be able to
aggregate materials to Europeana via the DRI

Next steps for DRI
Over the coming months DRI will be developing the
functionality to act as a Europeana Aggregator
We will also be publishing factsheets and guides, and
updating our Metadata Guidelines where required
When completed, we expect a simple button-click option to
push a published collection in DRI to Europeana

Content and Engagement Coordinator
We are currently in the process of hiring a Content and
Engagement Coordinator who will work with our members
to help them get their collections ready for Europeana
aggregation
While we do not intend to modify your metadata or data to
make it Europeana-ready, we will work with you and give
you what support we can to enable you to do so

Next steps for DRI Members
● Think about which of your collections are suitable for
aggregation to Europeana
● Enrich your own metadata where possible, to be
acceptable for Europeana there should be some
information about location, dates and/or subjects
● Ensure that your digital or digitised assets are of high
enough quality (e.g. image files should ideally be a
minimum of 1,200 pixels wide)
● Bear in mind that you may get more exposure if you use
a licence that allows some reuse (i.e. not “All Rights
Reserved”)

Call for volunteers
We will be looking for one or more datasets for our initial
aggregation tests with Europeana, ideally these would be
collections of images using a Creative Commons licence
Europeana prioritise the aggregation of:
● Content with licences that allow re-use. Public Domain
or one of the open Creative Commons licences
● High-quality content (e.g. large images, full text, HD
videos)
● Material that fits the Europeana Thematic Collections

Later we will want to work with members who have non-
image data (video, audio, text, etc.)
We have a particular interest in 3D materials as we will also
be working on a pilot 3D project as part of Europeana
Common Culture
