    The Only True God
God the Father - Our Provider!
INTRODUCTION
Imagine a local company is offering
$1,000,000 to the person that can justify his
or her need for it the most. You will have 5
minutes to submit a list on paper. When I
say “go” - begin writing. Now imagine that
we had to select one candidate from all of
you for you to receive the $. What would
we use as a criteria? How many of you
would qualify? How would you respond if
            you were the winner?
Providence
STUDYING GOD’S WORD

What does our heavenly Father do
     to provide for us?
Matthew 6:25-27
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about
your life, what you will eat or drink; or about
your body, what you will wear. Is not life
more important than food, and the body
more important than clothes? 26 Look at the
birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or
store away in barns, and yet your heavenly
Father feeds them. Are you not much more
valuable than they? 27 Who of you by
worrying can add a single hour to his life?
God the Father provides us WITH FOOD
AND DRINK - Think about how the U.S.
has dropped hundreds of thousands of
food rations into Afghanistan. There are
millions that need to be feed each day.
You might think that is a lot of people to
feed. However, God does an even greater
miracle. He provides for billions of people
             here on the earth.
Matthew 6:28-30
28 “And why do you worry about clothes?
See how the lilies of the field grow. They do
not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not
even Solomon in all his splendor was
dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how
God clothes the grass of the field, which is
here today and tomorrow is thrown into the
fire, will he not much more clothe you, O
               you of little faith?
God the Father provides us WITH
CLOTHING. No loving mother would say
to her child when the child is four years
old, “I’m not going to give you any clothes
from now on. You have to take care of
yourself.” God didn’t just make the world
and then tell people that they had to fend
for themselves. No, God even takes care
of us by giving us clothing.
2 Corinthians 9:8
And God is able to make all grace
abound to you, so that in all things at all
times, having all that you need, you will
     abound in every good work.
God the Father provides us ALL WE
NEED. How many of you have been
without clothing? How many of you
have ever had to sleep on the street
because you didn’t have a place to
sleep? Have you had to go naked,
unfed, etc? We have not lacked
anything for even one day out of the
thousands of days we have lived.
God our heavenly Father provides
us with all that we need every
              day.
GOD’S WORD IN MY LIFE
Evaluate this statement - If God
withdrew his preserving hand for even a
moment, the world would disappear into
oblivion.
Agree or Disagree and why? If we
remember that God provides our clothing,
we won’t complain if the clothing we have
is not exactly what we want.
STUDYING GOD’S WORD

  How does God provide
       for us?
John 6:3-13
3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside
and sat down with his disciples. 4 The
Jewish Passover Feast was near. 5 When
Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd
coming toward him, he said to Philip,
“Where shall we buy bread for these people
to eat?” 6 He asked this only to test him, for
he already had in mind what he was going
to do. 7 Philip answered him, “Eight months’
wages would not buy enough bread for
each one to have a bite!”
John 6:3-13
8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon
Peter’s brother, spoke up, 9 “Here is a boy
with five small barley loaves and two small
fish, but how far will they go among so
many?” 10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit
down.” There was plenty of grass in that
place, and the men sat down, about five
thousand of them. 11 Jesus then took the
loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to
those who were seated as much as they
wanted. He did the same with the fish.
John 6:3-13
12 When they had all had enough to eat,
he said to his disciples, “Gather the
pieces that are left over. Let nothing be
wasted.” 13 So they gathered them and
filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the
five barley loaves left over by those who
                  had eaten.
God can provide for us by DOING A
  MIRACLE. Remember when God’s
     people were wandering in the
wilderness, God had manna appear in
the morning and they miraculously had
quail to eat for meat. God also made
water come out of a rock for a million
plus people. If necessary, God could
           do that for us too.
Psalm 104:14
He makes grass grow for the cattle, and
plants for man to cultivate— bringing forth
           food from the earth:
God provides for us by MAKING THINGS
GROW. Think of the many different kinds
of plants that grow in our world. There are
grains that feed us and the animals and
there are fruits and vegetables. Think of the
cotton and rubber plants that provide us
with clothing and other products. Think of
the birds, fish, and animals that multiply to
provide us with many different kinds of
meat. None of these things grow by
chance. God makes them grow to provide
each of us with what we need.
While God can provide for us
through miracles, he usually does so
    just by making things grow.
CHRISTIAN VOCABULARY

Miracle: A wonder or unusual happening
brought about by God beyond the natural
order of things.
Providence: (Provide) God the Father’s
activity of supplying everything that we
need to keep our body in this life.
STUDYING GOD’S WORD

   How does our Heavenly Father
want us to show our appreciation?
Psalm 118:1
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;
       his love endures forever.
God wants us to simply THANK HIM. A
little child can’t do anything to repay
mother or father for taking care of him so
well. But every mother and father loves
to hear a child simply say, “Thank you,
Mommy or Daddy!” Our heavenly Father
also loves to hear us say a simple “Thank
You, heavenly Father.” Think of how
wonderful it would be if each of us said
that daily. Thank Him in prayer.
Psalm 103:1-2
 1 Of David. Praise the LORD, O my soul;
all my inmost being, praise his holy name. 2
Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not
              all his benefits—
God also wants us to PRAISE HIM.
Doesn’t it feel good when someone praises
you for doing something great. Our
heavenly Father is glad to hear our songs
and prayers or praise to him for all his
               goodness to us.
Psalm 119:56-57
56 This has been my practice: I obey your
precepts. Heth 57 You are my portion, O
LORD; I have promised to obey your words.
God also wants us to OBEY HIM. If you
want to show someone that you really
appreciate a special gift they give you,
what is one sure way besides saying
thank you? Wouldn’t it be to gladly do
something for them - things they ask you
to do without complaining? We show our
appreciation by what we do according to
              God’s Word.
We can show our appreciation for
  our heavenly Father’s goodness
toward us by thanking, praising and
           obeying Him.
GOD’S WORD IN MY LIFE
If we compare your home to that of
a king who lived in ancient times, which
one do you think would be the better
home to live in? Give examples why.
What does this impress on us about
     how richly God preserves us?
STUDYING GOD’S WORD

What does our heavenly Father do to
           protect us?
Psalm 121:1-8
1 A song of ascents. I lift up my eyes to the
hills— where does my help come from? 2 My
help comes from the LORD, the Maker of
heaven and earth. 3 He will not let your foot
slip— he who watches over you will not
slumber; 4 indeed, he who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep. 5 The LORD
watches over you— the LORD is your shade
at your right hand; 6 the sun will not harm you
by day, nor the moon by night. 7 The LORD
will keep you from all harm— he will watch
over your life; 8 the LORD will watch over your
coming and going both now and forevermore.
God protects us by watching over us
constantly. If you ever had to baby-sit for
a one year old, you know how much
trouble they can get into without even
knowing that they are getting into trouble.
You have to watch them constantly and
keep them in your sight. God needs to
watch us constantly, because we do
things that we don’t even know that we
are getting in trouble for. God is a perfect
babysitter. He always watches and has
          the power to protect us.
Romans 8:28
And we know that in all things God
works for the good of those who love
him, who have been called according
           to his purpose.
If trouble does come into our lives, God
turns it out in some way for our good.
After Joseph’s brothers sold him from
prison, God gave him the highest position
in Egypt, and used him to save all of
Egypt as well as Joseph’s family from
starvation. Remember, it is the same God
            who is protecting you!
Psalm 91:10-11
10 then no harm will befall you, no
disaster will come near your tent. 11
For he will command his angels
concerning you to guard you in all
             your ways;
God sends his angels TO GUARD US
SO THAT NO HARM COMES NEAR
US. Because angels don’t have bodies,
we might feel that they don’t exist. But
they were there protecting you in the last
accident that almost happened to you.
God send them to protect you.
God protects us by constantly
watching over us and sending out
His angels to guard us and He
makes sure all things turn out for
           our good.
GOD’S WORD IN MY LIFE
     Agree or disagree and why?
Sometimes God actually causes bad
things to happen so that he has a chance
to use them for our good.

11 The Only True God
God the Son - Our Substitute

     STUDYING GOD’S WORD

       Who is Jesus Christ our
          Substitute?
Colossians 2:9
For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity
            lives in bodily form,

             Romans 9:5
Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is
traced the human ancestry of Christ,
who is God over all, forever praised!
1 John 4:9
This is how God showed his love among
us: He sent his one and only Son into
the world that we might live through him.

According to the bolded portions of
those passages, what does the Bible
   call Jesus Christ?
John 11:43,44
When he had said this, Jesus called in a
loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The
dead man came out, his hands and feet
wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth
           around his face.
Mark 6:41-44
He also divided the two fish among
them all. They all ate and were
satisfied, and the disciples picked up
twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of
bread and fish. The number of the men
who had eaten was five thousand.
Mark 1:34
Jesus healed many who had various
diseases. He also drove out many demons.
Do these passages support the fact that
Jesus is true God? If so, how?
STUDYING GOD’S WORD

             1 Timothy 2:5
For there is one God and one mediator
between God and men, the man Christ
                  Jesus.
             Romans 9:5
Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is
traced the human ancestry of Christ, who
is God over all, forever praised!
Romans 5:15
If the many died by the trespass of the
one man, how much more did God’s
grace and the gift that came by the grace
of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to
               the many!

According to the bolded portions of
those verses, what else does the Bible
          call Jesus Christ?
Mark 11:12
The next day as they were leaving
   Bethany, Jesus was hungry.

            John 19:28
Later, knowing that all was now
completed, and so that the Scripture
would be fulfilled, Jesus said, "I am
              thirsty."
John 4:6
Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, tired
as he was from the journey, sat down by
                the well.

          Galatians 4:4
God sent his son, born of a woman.
Do these passages support your answer
that Jesus is man? If so, how?
Jesus Christ our substitute is true
God and true man in one
             person.
CHRISTIAN VOCABULARY
Incarnation: (“in the flesh”) The virgin
was impregnated by the Holy Spirit and
the Son of God took on humanity. He
became true God and man in one person.
Substitute: Someone who takes the
place of another to accomplish what could
not be carried out by the first.
STUDYING GOD’S WORD

 When did Jesus become both
God and man in one person?
Matthew 1:20,23
20 But after he had considered this, an
angel of the Lord appeared to him in a
dream and said, “Joseph son of David,
do not be afraid to take Mary home as
your wife, because what is conceived
in her is from the Holy Spirit. 23 “The
virgin will be with child and will give birth
to a son, and they will call him
  Immanuel”—which means, “God with
                    us.”
Colossians 2:9
For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives
               in bodily form,

Jesus became both God and man
together in one person at the same
time when he was conceived by the
Holy Spirit and born of the virgin
        Mary. (Incarnation)
GOD’S WORD IN MY LIFE
Agree or disagree and why? Jesus is
half man and half God in one person.

Agree or disagree and why? The truth
that Jesus is both true God and true man
in one person is a miracle which we really
can’t understand.
STUDYING GOD’S WORD
What is the first reason Jesus
became both God and man in one
             person?
Galatians 4:4
God sent his son, born of a woman.

              Hebrews 4:15
For we do not have a high priest who is
    unable to sympathize with our
weaknesses, but we have one who has
been tempted in every way, just as we
      are—yet was without sin.
Romans 5:19
For just as through the disobedience of the one
man the many were made sinners, so also
through the obedience of the one man the many
             will be made righteous.

Jesus became the God / man so
that he could be subject to God’s
law and keep it for us
STUDYING GOD’S WORD

What is another reason that Jesus
became both God and man in one
           person?
Hebrews 2:14
Since the children have flesh and
blood, he too shared in their
humanity so that by his death he
might destroy him who holds the power
    of death—that is, the devil—
Jesus became true man so that he
could die. If Jesus was only true God
he would be eternal and could not die.
It may not seem like a good reason to
become man, but Jesus knew what he
had to do to save us.
John 1:29
The next day John saw Jesus coming
toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb
of God, who takes away the sin of
             the world!
Jesus was God so that His death would
pay for the sins of all people. I could say
to God, “I will die as a substitute for my
daughters sins.” But it would do no good.
The death of one person, even a good
person, would not be enough to take the
sins away of anyone. That is why Jesus
had to be God. His death was punishment
enough for the sins of everyone in the
world. As God he could do what we are
               not able to do.
Jesus also became both God and
man so that he could do and by his
death pay for the sins of the world.
Flow chart of the God / Man Jesus
Christ
                                   JESUS’ PERSON

             TRUE MAN TRUE GOD
 for the Bible calls him man  for the Bible calls him God
 he did human things (such as eat  and he did things only God can do
and sleep)  he has divine attributes (such as
 he has a body and soul being all-knowing, holy, etc

                                    combined in one person

                                      INCARNATION
                                            so that...

... he could be born under under the law ... he could keep the law perfectly

... he could die ... his sacrifice would be valuable
                                                             enough to ransom all people
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
If God had been interested in saving
the elephants of this world, he would have
sent his Son Jesus and had him take on
the form of an elephant. While such a
      thought is absolutely ridiculous,
nonetheless, it does show us why Jesus
needed to take on a human nature, being
born of a woman. He did it to be our
          substitute in every way.
As our substitute, Jesus lived forus that
    perfectly sinless life which God
demands we live, but simply can’t.
While on this earth Jesus did not sin
one time against the law of God. We
 call this Jesus’ “active obedience”.
This is what Jesus actively did for us.
Secondly, as our substitute, Jesus
died an innocent death on the cross. He
allowed himself to be killed. This we call
his “passive obedience”. This is what he
allowed people to do to him. Being free of
sins himself, he was able to carry the sins
of the world, including yours and mine, on
               his shoulders.
If you ask people what Jesus had to
do to forgive the sins of the world, they
would say, “He had to die on the cross.”
Their answer is only half right. Yes,
Jesus had to die on the cross. But
before that, he also had to live a sinless
life. We need to remember that both his
perfect life and his innocent death were
necessary for him to be our perfect
                 substitute.
GOD’S WORD IN MY LIFE
Agree or disagree and why? If
Jesus were not true God and true man in
one person, he could not have saved us.
Agree or disagree and why? Jesus
saved us by living a sinless life.

Confirmation 10 & 11 done

  • 1. 10 The Only True God God the Father - Our Provider!
  • 2. INTRODUCTION Imagine a local company is offering $1,000,000 to the person that can justify his or her need for it the most. You will have 5 minutes to submit a list on paper. When I say “go” - begin writing. Now imagine that we had to select one candidate from all of you for you to receive the $. What would we use as a criteria? How many of you would qualify? How would you respond if you were the winner?
  • 4. STUDYING GOD’S WORD What does our heavenly Father do to provide for us?
  • 5. Matthew 6:25-27 25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?
  • 6. God the Father provides us WITH FOOD AND DRINK - Think about how the U.S. has dropped hundreds of thousands of food rations into Afghanistan. There are millions that need to be feed each day. You might think that is a lot of people to feed. However, God does an even greater miracle. He provides for billions of people here on the earth.
  • 7. Matthew 6:28-30 28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
  • 8. God the Father provides us WITH CLOTHING. No loving mother would say to her child when the child is four years old, “I’m not going to give you any clothes from now on. You have to take care of yourself.” God didn’t just make the world and then tell people that they had to fend for themselves. No, God even takes care of us by giving us clothing.
  • 9. 2 Corinthians 9:8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.
  • 10. God the Father provides us ALL WE NEED. How many of you have been without clothing? How many of you have ever had to sleep on the street because you didn’t have a place to sleep? Have you had to go naked, unfed, etc? We have not lacked anything for even one day out of the thousands of days we have lived.
  • 11. God our heavenly Father provides us with all that we need every day.
  • 12. GOD’S WORD IN MY LIFE Evaluate this statement - If God withdrew his preserving hand for even a moment, the world would disappear into oblivion. Agree or Disagree and why? If we remember that God provides our clothing, we won’t complain if the clothing we have is not exactly what we want.
  • 13. STUDYING GOD’S WORD How does God provide for us?
  • 14. John 6:3-13 3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples. 4 The Jewish Passover Feast was near. 5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” 6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, “Eight months’ wages would not buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”
  • 15. John 6:3-13 8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, 9 “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?” 10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and the men sat down, about five thousand of them. 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.
  • 16. John 6:3-13 12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.
  • 17. God can provide for us by DOING A MIRACLE. Remember when God’s people were wandering in the wilderness, God had manna appear in the morning and they miraculously had quail to eat for meat. God also made water come out of a rock for a million plus people. If necessary, God could do that for us too.
  • 18. Psalm 104:14 He makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for man to cultivate— bringing forth food from the earth:
  • 19. God provides for us by MAKING THINGS GROW. Think of the many different kinds of plants that grow in our world. There are grains that feed us and the animals and there are fruits and vegetables. Think of the cotton and rubber plants that provide us with clothing and other products. Think of the birds, fish, and animals that multiply to provide us with many different kinds of meat. None of these things grow by chance. God makes them grow to provide each of us with what we need.
  • 20. While God can provide for us through miracles, he usually does so just by making things grow.
  • 21. CHRISTIAN VOCABULARY Miracle: A wonder or unusual happening brought about by God beyond the natural order of things. Providence: (Provide) God the Father’s activity of supplying everything that we need to keep our body in this life.

  • 23. Psalm 118:1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.
  • 24. God wants us to simply THANK HIM. A little child can’t do anything to repay mother or father for taking care of him so well. But every mother and father loves to hear a child simply say, “Thank you, Mommy or Daddy!” Our heavenly Father also loves to hear us say a simple “Thank You, heavenly Father.” Think of how wonderful it would be if each of us said that daily. Thank Him in prayer.
  • 25. Psalm 103:1-2 1 Of David. Praise the LORD, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. 2 Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits— God also wants us to PRAISE HIM. • 26. Psalm 119:56-57 56 This has been my practice: I obey your precepts. Heth 57 You are my portion, O LORD; I have promised to obey your words.
  • 27. God also wants us to OBEY HIM. If you want to show someone that you really appreciate a special gift they give you, what is one sure way besides saying thank you? Wouldn’t it be to gladly do something for them - things they ask you to do without complaining? We show our appreciation by what we do according to God’s Word.

  • 29. GOD’S WORD IN MY LIFE If we compare your home to that of a king who lived in ancient times, which one do you think would be the better home to live in? Give examples why. What does this impress on us about how richly God preserves us?
  • 30. STUDYING GOD’S WORD What does our heavenly Father do to protect us?
  • 31. Psalm 121:1-8 1 A song of ascents. I lift up my eyes to the hills— where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. 3 He will not let your foot slip— he who watches over you will not slumber; 4 indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. 5 The LORD watches over you— the LORD is your shade at your right hand; 6 the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. 7 The LORD will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life; 8 the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.
  • 32. God protects us by watching over us constantly. If you ever had to baby-sit for a one year old, you know how much trouble they can get into without even knowing that they are getting into trouble. You have to watch them constantly and keep them in your sight. God needs to watch us constantly, because we do things that we don’t even know that we are getting in trouble for. God is a perfect babysitter. He always watches and has the power to protect us.
  • 33. Romans 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
  • 34. If trouble does come into our lives, God turns it out in some way for our good. After Joseph’s brothers sold him from prison, God gave him the highest position in Egypt, and used him to save all of Egypt as well as Joseph’s family from starvation. Remember, it is the same God who is protecting you!
  • 35. Psalm 91:10-11 10 then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent. 11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways;
  • 36. God sends his angels TO GUARD US SO THAT NO HARM COMES NEAR US. Because angels don’t have bodies, we might feel that they don’t exist. But they were there protecting you in the last accident that almost happened to you. God send them to protect you.
  • 37. God protects us by constantly watching over us and sending out His angels to guard us and He makes sure all things turn out for our good.
  • 38. GOD’S WORD IN MY LIFE Agree or disagree and why? Sometimes God actually causes bad things to happen so that he has a chance to use them for our good. HYMNOLOGY Hymn 260 Let All Things Now Living

  • 53. Matthew 1:20,23 20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 23 “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”—which means, “God with us.”

  • 55. GOD’S WORD IN MY LIFE Agree or disagree and why? Jesus is half man and half God in one person. Agree or disagree and why? The truth that Jesus is both true God and true man in one person is a miracle which we really can’t understand.
  • 56. STUDYING GOD’S WORD What is the first reason Jesus became both God and man in one person?
  • 57. Galatians 4:4 God sent his son, born of a woman. Hebrews 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin.

  • 62. John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
  • 63. Jesus was God so that His death would pay for the sins of all people. I could say to God, “I will die as a substitute for my daughters sins.” But it would do no good. The death of one person, even a good person, would not be enough to take the sins away of anyone. That is why Jesus had to be God. His death was punishment enough for the sins of everyone in the world. As God he could do what we are not able to do.
  • 64. Jesus also became both God and man so that he could do and by his death pay for the sins of the world.

  • 66. FOOD FOR THOUGHT If God had been interested in saving the elephants of this world, he would have sent his Son Jesus and had him take on the form of an elephant. While such a thought is absolutely ridiculous, nonetheless, it does show us why Jesus needed to take on a human nature, being born of a woman. He did it to be our substitute in every way.
  • 67. As our substitute, Jesus lived forus that perfectly sinless life which God demands we live, but simply can’t. While on this earth Jesus did not sin one time against the law of God. We call this Jesus’ “active obedience”. This is what Jesus actively did for us.
  • 68. Secondly, as our substitute, Jesus died an innocent death on the cross. He allowed himself to be killed. This we call his “passive obedience”. This is what he allowed people to do to him.
