Biodiversity science is a broad discipline, and there have been multiple efforts to standardize data within and across various sub-disciplines. Darwin Core (DwC) is a standard vocabulary for biodiversity data that has primarily been used by the museum community to describe specimens and observations of taxa. The Minimum Information about any (x) Sequence (MIxS) specifies minimum metadata for use by the genomic and metagenomic communities. The Extensible Observation Ontology (OBO-E) was developed at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis to more precisely describe ecological data collection. The first part of this talk describes how the Biological Collections Ontology project is developing both the ontology and associated tools to link data from across these three efforts. The second half describes the Data Commons being developed by the iPlant Collaborative, and how it is both taking advantage of and supporting further development of existing community standards for biological data.

Biodiversity data is extremely approachable – the concept of a specimen existing in time and place is clear to grasp and interesting to a wide range of people. I exploited this inherent feature of Biodiversity data to create an educational framework for teaching undergraduate Data Science. The project utilized Discovery Learning theory, based in the belief that it is best for learners to discover facts and relationships for themselves. Students were given a choice of databases and were mentored through an entire data analysis pipeline, including gathering, cleaning, analyzing, and visualization of the data. Their work culminates into a tutorial posted online (curiositydata.org) – instilling proper documentation, open science, and data management techniques. These tutorials can then be used and remixed as documentation for the databases, curriculum, and workshops detailing how to access and analyze the databases data. Increased documentation will overcome accessibility challenges that plague many Biodiversity databases, in an overarching aim to increase the usage and in turn value of these vital data resources. Computer Science, Statistics, and Biology undergraduates are increasingly “data literate”, and if mentored properly, we can foster a symbiotic relationship between the real-world Data Science education and the increase of usability of Biodiversity databases.

Katja C. Seltmann*1, Babi Hammond*2, Matthew Bertone1, Andrew R. Deans1 1North Carolina State University, Department of Entomology, Campus Box 7613, Raleigh, NC, USA; 2Department of Information Science, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC, USA The North Carolina State {University} Insect Museum is working to image every drawer in the 1.5 million specimen collection and disseminate these data through the Web. The effort is worthwhile in that we expose the "research only" collection to the public, allow for remote curation of specimens, and enable more informed loan requests. The details and process for creating GigaPan (zoomable, mega-pixel images of entire drawers of specimens) images are outlined in the talk. Secondly, as part of a CollectionsWeb Research Coordination Network (RCN) funded internship awarded to Babi Hammond, preliminary results of a survey is presented looking at the use of online entomological collection data. Survey participants are asked to review and rate the utility of multiple online presentations of collection data; specimen information without images, GigaPan images, and detailed images with specimen data. The results will help institutions with entomological collections and the Advancing Digitization of Biological Collections (ADBC) program participants better understand how to apply their resources and digitization efforts.

Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) is the most popular style of large language model application to emerge from 2023. The most basic style of RAG works by vectorizing your data and injecting it into a vector database like Milvus for retrieval to augment the text output generated by an LLM. This is just the beginning. One of the ways that we can extend RAG, and extend AI, is through multilingual use cases. Typical RAG is done in English using embedding models that are trained in English. In this talk, we’ll explore how RAG could work in languages other than English. We’ll explore French, Chinese, and Polish.

Corporate and higher education. Two industries that, in the past, have had a clear divide with very little crossover. The difference in goals, learning styles and objectives paved the way for differing learning technologies platforms to evolve. Now, those stark lines are blurring as both sides are discovering they have content that’s relevant to the other. Join Tammy Rutherford as she walks through the pros and cons of corporate and higher ed collaborating. And the challenges of these different technology platforms working together for a brighter future.

Webinar Recording: https://www.panagenda.com/webinars/why-teams-call-analytics-is-critical-to-your-entire-business Nothing is as frustrating and noticeable as being in an important call and being unable to see or hear the other person. Not surprising then, that issues with Teams calls are among the most common problems users call their helpdesk for. Having in depth insight into everything relevant going on at the user’s device, local network, ISP and Microsoft itself during the call is crucial for good Microsoft Teams Call quality support. To ensure a quick and adequate solution and to ensure your users get the most out of their Microsoft 365. But did you know that ‘bad calls’ are also an excellent indicator of other problems arising? Precisely because it is so noticeable!? Like the canary in the mine, bad calls can be early indicators of problems. Problems that might otherwise not have been noticed for a while but can have a big impact on productivity and satisfaction. Join this session by Christoph Adler to learn how true Microsoft Teams call quality analytics helped other organizations troubleshoot bad calls and identify and fix problems that impacted Teams calls or the use of Microsoft365 in general. See what it can do to keep your users happy and productive! In this session we will cover - Why CQD data alone is not enough to troubleshoot call problems - The importance of attributing call problems to the right call participant - What call quality analytics can do to help you quickly find, fix-, and prevent problems - Why having retrospective detailed insights matters - Real life examples of how others have used Microsoft Teams call quality monitoring to problem shoot problems with their ISP, network, device health and more.

Explore how multimodal embeddings work with Milvus. We will see how you can explore a popular multimodal model - CLIP - on a popular dataset - CIFAR 10. You use CLIP to create the embeddings of the input data, Milvus to store the embeddings of the multimodal data (sometimes termed “multimodal embeddings”), and we will then explore the embeddings.

Dubai, often portrayed as a shimmering oasis in the desert, faces its own set of challenges, including the occasional threat of flooding. Despite its reputation for opulence and modernity, the emirate is not immune to the forces of nature. In recent years, Dubai has experienced sporadic but significant floods, testing the resilience of its infrastructure and communities. Among the critical lifelines in this bustling metropolis is the Dubai International Airport, a bustling hub that connects the city to the world. This article explores the intersection of Dubai flood events and the resilience demonstrated by the Dubai International Airport in the face of such challenges.
