Useful Linux Training

If you have started to use the Linux Operating System. you might be interested in some free
Linux Training courses offered by the IBM Developerworks website.

Basic tasks for new Linux users as follows:

Logging in and understanding the Linux desktop
Navigation and settings
Tweaking settings to suit your personal needs
Command line access
When you really need to work at the command line
Becoming superuser (or root)
When ordinary user authority isn’t enough
Using a GUI application as another user
Getting comfortable with multi-user system capabilities
Removable devices
Using removable media and making sure you don’t lose data when you detach
       removable devices
Logout
When you’re done for a while or need a panel icon for logout or other applications
Adding users and groups
Adding more users or user groups to your system

These instructions and examples focus on three popular distributions and their default graphical
desktops:

Fedora 13 using a GNOME desktop
        OpenSUSE 11.3 using a KDE 4 desktop
Ubuntu 10.10 using a GNOME desktop

                                                                                            1/3
Other distributions, desktops, and window managers are available, and we encourage you to
explore further on your own. Even if some of the information here is specific to a particular
distribution and even a particular version of a distribution, what you learn here should help you
navigate a strange distribution.

Because this tutorial simply aims to help you get started, you won’t find information on more
advanced tasks like recompiling your kernel or installing software. We recommend our
no-charge Linux (LPI) certification self-study guides for deeper information.

Linux Professional Institute (LPI) Certification Courses

They allow to increase your knowledge of Linux and prepare for the LPI Certification exams.

The Linux Professional Institute (LPI) certifies Linux® system administrators at three levels:

Certification level 1 (Junior level, or LPIC-1)
Certification level 2 (Advanced level, or LPIC-2)
Certification level 3 (Senior level, or LPIC-3)

To attain certification level 1, you must pass LPIC-1 exams 101 and 102.
To attain certification level 2, you must pass LPIC-2 exams 201 and 202.
To attain certification level 3, you must pass LPIC-3 exam 301 (“core”) and have an active
certification level 2. You may also need to pass additional specialty exams at the senior level.

Before you take the exams, review the LPI-oriented articles and tutorials on developerWorks,
designed as study guides for each exam topic.

The main tutorials are the following:

Foundational concepts (the 101- and 102-series articles, which correspond to LPIC-1
       certification)
Intermediate to advanced topics (the 201- and 202-series tutorials, which correspond to
       LPIC-2 certification)
Expert topics (the 301-series tutorials, which correspond to LPIC-3 certification)

There are plenty of useful information on the IBM Developerworks website. It is a very good
resource.

                                                                                             2/3
