Migration and
Colonization
Migration and Colonization

Philadelphia has a rich cultural background that involves several immigrant
groups. From religious to ethnic/racial backgrounds you can see it here.
Immigration to Philadelphia started in the 1600's. During that time Europeans
sailed for many different reasons. In the recent years, there have been a
predominance of different ethnic/racial and/or religious backgrounds in
Philadelphia. In the “Port Fishington” (includes parts of Port Richmond,
Fishtown, and Kensington) section of the city you can see a predominance of
 Caucasians, Hispanic/Latinos and Vietnamese.

In the image of Visitation B.V.M., a catholic church in that area, you can see
that they incorporate the three main languages spoken in that area; English,
Spanish and Vietnamese. This is not only found in Philadelphia, but
 throughout the world.
Environment and
Energy
Environment and Energy

Environment and Energy are topics that have been going around for years.
This is not an issue that involves only one country; it involves the world. In
recent years the many countries have started to try other means of helping the
environment and generating energy. This can be seen in the United States. The
US, like many of the first world countries, have teamed up to set standards to
help create energy efficient buildings and other materials.

Pennsylvania is one of the top states to have productive underground coal-
mines in the US. This is slowly changing. The Secretary of Energy, Dr. Steven
Chu, has decided to visit different factories and buildings throughout the US.
He visited a training facility in North Philadelphia where workers were trained
to install insulation and other materials that help lower the amount of energy
used. As you can see in the image, there are several facilities that have
generators that help people gain some enrgy in the form of electricity.
Science and
Technology
Science and Technology

Science and Technology are essential to most of our everyday life, at least for
most of us, that is. With computers, phones, and other gadgets, we have
reached the unthinkable. There are places where it is required to have a
computer with you. For example, Science Leadership Academy students
receive a school-issued laptop at the beginning of their school year in order to
help them throughout the year. This is just one of the way technology is being
used.

Science and technology have rapidly evolved in the past few decades. Within a
span of a few years technology has reached numerous accomplishments.
Recently, scientists have worked together to create Smart dust. In a CNN
article it is stated that Smart dust “would monitor everything, acting like
electronic nerve endings for the planet.” This is just one of the few technologies
that are being thought up and brought to life throughout the world.
Trade
Trade

Many different objects are made outside of the United States. There are items
like clothing that have tags that say “Made in China” or in other countries.
This is because of the international trade agreements. China and the US have a
special trade relationship. Many of the items that are around are made in
China. The China-Trade started about a century ago. The United States is not
only trading with China, it also has trade relationships with many of the
world’s countries.

Agriculture is another trade market. Since most of the United States cannot
produce so much food, it is imported from other countries. There are other
trade markets that are large and without some balance there could be some
sort of disruption that can be triggered and can affect many countries.
Health
Health

Health is one of the world's prime focuses. In the United States the health care
system is relatively good. Philadelphia specifically has one of the best
children’s hospitals in the country, the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
Many people come from around the country to this particular hospital. There
are many hospitals in the area. One example would be the common Temple
University Hospital. This hospital has several campuses throughout the city.
There are several other health care buildings within the city limits.
Philadelphia also house health insurance offices for Health Partners and Blue
Cross Blue Shield companies.

Globally there have been some issues with the health care of many people.
There are many countries in Africa that have low life expectancy rates. When
something like an STD is correlated to one part of the globe, the global
community tries to help improve the living conditions of the specific area..
Security and
Terrorism
Security and Terrorism

Security is main component of the world. In Philadelphia, there are Police
Officers that try to help secure the city. There are many different ways that
security can be shown in the city, country, and the world.

In the United States, there have been several security regulations passed in
order to keep us secure. The Transportation Security Administration, is set on
keeping people safe, especially when they travel. Terrorism also plays a large
part in all of this. After the 9/11 attacks, many countries throughout the world
started to secure their airports and borders even more.
Education
Education

Education in the United States is mandatory for all children. The US states that
everyone is entitled to an education no matter legal status. In the state of
Pennsylvania, the mandatory years that a child must be in school are from the
age of five to the age of sixteen. The United States is one of many countries that
emphasize education and try to move people forward. As you can see in the
photograph, there are many schools in the Philadelphia area that are bilingual
schools. These schools help families and children feel comfortable learning.

There are international laws in place requiring children to have an education. It
is sad to witness how different governments decide not to enforce it. It is also a
matter of how wealthy the country is itself.
Development
Development

There are many forms of development. One could be about developing nations
and how they are growing and growing. Another could refer to developments
within cities. In the photograph, you can see a sign that welcomes visitors to a
new development in the heart of Kensington, Philadelphia. There are many
different neighborhoods that are changing through developments. Throughout
the city and the country you can see different forms of developments.

International development deals with how countries are trying to change.
There are many third-world countries that are trying to develop new means of
becoming stable countries. These developing nations are able to start the
change with the help of developed nations, like the United States.
Society and
Culture
Society and Culture

In the city of Philadelphia you can see many different cultures altogether. This
is due to the fact that people from many different backgrounds reached
Philadelphia. In the section on Migration, I explained about one region in the
city. The city itself can be split up into cultural neighborhoods. In North
Philadelphia, you can see how one section is considered El Centro de Oro
(Golden Center) This center is where many of the Latinos have their cultural
section. One key place that stands out is El Taller Puertorriqueño. This is a very
big cultural symbol in the city of Philadelphia.

The Taller, helps anyone who is interested in things like the arts, or in
educating others about different cultural impacts. This is one of the examples
that we have today of how big metropolitan cities have smaller neighborhoods
that represent different cultures.
Gender
Gender

Many people think of gender as women rights only or that it only has to do
with women. This is not true. When the term gender pops up, it involves
gender inequality and other big issues. Depending on the country you live in,
you can see different gender dynamics. In the neighborhood that I live in, there
are many different immigrant groups living there. A common factor that I see
played out is the education of the women. The photograph shows that people
have established designated buildings in order to help women move on.

Examples like those do not just pop out of thin air. They are what people
perceive to be factual and to be right. In countries like the Dominican Republic,
there is gender inequality mainly with the older generations. This is happening
everywhere. Gender inequality can be difficult for many people to
comprehend because it is a topic that has layers and it is not only black or
white.
