• Complicated Application Development
11. Devices – RIM 950/850, 957/857
• “Always on” wireless data device
• Low power 386 chip
• Storage up to 5 MB
• Works over Mobitex, DataTac, GPRS
• Runs BlackBerry Email service
12. Devices – Pocket PC
• Lots of different chips
– Up to 206 MHz
• Storage up to 64 MB
• Wireless requires a full-size card (e.g., Sierra
Wireless)
• Most robust platform for development
13. Devices - Palm
• Defined the market
• Lots of software
• Motorola Dragonball chip up to 20 MHz
• Wireless through Omnisky
• Memory up to 8 MB (or memory stick)
14. Devices - Other
• PC variants (palmtops, laptops)
• Smartphones
• Pagers
• Tablet
16. Current Approach
Extend the web paradigm via transcoding techniques.
On-line Paradigm Assumes
• Existing content can simply be
“Ported”
• A fat pipe exists
• Network is always there
• All desk top information is
appropriate on a small device
• People are patient
17. Current Market Approach Fails
• Only need to present
relevant data
• 19.2kbs is prevalent
• Must find ways to “speed” up
development and delivery
• Networks Unreliable
• Mobile Applications
• Broadband networks are in
the distant future
• Must use a framework
• Off-line capabilities and synching

21. Promise of Mobile Applications
Potential Mobile Data Adoption and ROI by Vertical Industry Sector
The promise of a wireless enterprise is to cut costs, improve productivity and improve efficiencies for the mobile workforce. To achieve that…..(Go through the list…)..then,
Lots of point solutions today addressing various aspects of these needs. This makes it complex to deliver a mobile solution… as an example….(next slide)
Easier said than done.
Some of the major challenges that an enterprise faces today in deploying a wireless solution include (read the list…)
Let’s go through each of these one at a time…
If you are looking to deploy a mobile workforce, these are some of the issues these are some of the issues that need to be managed…..
To get national coverage for your mobile workforce, you need to set up agreements with the various data networks and ensure inter-operability so when your troops travel from one coverage area into another, they continuously have seamless coverage, despite the change in network protocols.
Then you need to select, acquire and provision your devices. Network arrangements you make are often tied to the device you select and what they offer for networks.
Administering these process, dealing with multiple bills and security concerns with the flow of data and the potential of devices being lost etc are all very real world issues. Look for a solution that does some or all of the following….
Main issue is coverage. Wanted to give you more information that may be useful.
