WHAT WILL BECOME OF THE NEXT
GENERATION?
By Barry Kennedy
There they were sitting on the front porch in their rocking chairs
discussing how things “used to be.” “Do you remember those were the good ole
days?” they would say. Their minds would drift back to a more peaceful time.
They reminisced of a time when everyone understood what “neighbor” really
means. As it always seems to be in the course of this type of conversation,
this statement is made, “I don’t know what is going to become of this next
generation.”
Sometimes people make such a statement after they see how the next
generation is dressed, what type of music they are listening to, or the way in
which they “express themselves.” Needless to say, some of these
characteristics could be unbecoming of a child of God (1 Timothy 2:9;
Matthew 12: 35-37; Matthew 5:13-16). On the other hand, when we see the
next generation taking a leading role in the worship services, we cannot help
but have hope for the next generation. That is exactly what we were privileged
to see Sunday night.
It has been said that we are always one generation away from apostasy.
Many times we find ourselves looking only at the negatives in life. If we listen
to the media it may seem as though the whole world is going “down the drain.”
Our congregation is tremendously blessed to have such capable teachers and
leaders who are willing to take the time to train our young men. How could
anyone not be encouraged by the respect these young men showed in the way
they conducted the worship service? It is very evident that they have worked
very hard, and we all can easily say how proud we are of them. But what will
become of the next generation?
The next generation will be successful if they have godly parents.
Solomon wrote, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old,
he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6). God has placed great responsibility
upon parents. Of course, when we consider the fact that our children are a
blessing from God we can understand why. “Lo, children are an heritage of the
LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward” (Psalm 127:3). It is evident
that God wants His children returned to Him. Therefore parents are to be good

stewards of the time that we have been given with
those children (John 14:1-6). Both God and
children require godly parents. But what are
godly parents? To put it simply, godly parents
are parents who prioritize in the home. “But
seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His
righteousness; and all these things shall be added
unto you” (Matthew 6:33). Can we say that we
put God first in our lives? Maybe it would be
better to sit down with the children and ask them
if Mommy and Daddy put God first in their
homes? Would we be comfortable with what they
had to say?
The next generation will be successful if
they hold fast their faith. “Let us hold fast the
profession of our faith without wavering; (for he
is faithful that promised;)” (Hebrews 10:23). The
Hebrews writer is writing to encourage both the
present and future generations of Christians to
never give up in their “profession.” They had at
one point named Christ as the Son of God, and
they were obedient to the gospel. That does not
mean that every thing is going to be easy from
that point on; therefore, they needed
encouragement to keep the faith. The Devil is
described as a roaring lion seeking souls to
devour (1Peter 5:8). Peter begins this verse with a
call for discretion and vigilance on the part of
every Christian. We must not be wavering in the
faith or we most assuredly will fall (Hebrews
10:23; James 1:6). How successful will our next
generation be? The answer to that question has a
lot to do with how well our generation teaches
(especially through our example) steadfastness in
the faith (1 Corinthians 15:58).
We are truly blessed here at East Main with
a good group of young people who are giving us
a lot of hope for the future. If you have not
encouraged them in the good work that they have
done and continue to do, let’s make it a point to
do so very soon. May God help us all to do our
part to avoid hearing anyone say of our children,
“What will become of the next generation?”
