This document discusses Smart Subjects, a subject recommendation engine that takes user search queries as input and outputs a list of related library subjects. It is intended to provide application-independent subject recommendations that can be integrated into library search tools. The system works by harvesting institutional data like course descriptions and faculty publications to create text extracts of academic departments, which are then indexed and queried to crosswalk departments to library subjects. Potential applications include integrating recommendations into quick search and an OpenSearch interface. Future plans include expanding the subject indices and gauging interest in a community platform.
