Service Design Drinks started off into their 5th year. This edition discussed one of the most important services – education. Our own Manuel – who recently co-organised a summit on the future of education – shed light on educational services in Germany with focus on digital tools. He presented a study, discuss today’s challenges and potential approaches to them. To fit the topic the event took place at the ‘Evangelische Schule Berlin Zentrum’, known for its application of design thinking in the classroom.

CityBugs is a social platform to enable solutions for critical issues affecting the environment, health, education, public services and more. Using a participatory approach – “Let’s make our city a better place to live in,” citizens report the “bug” in their community to municipal authorities, while tracking and validating the solution. Committed citizens can access CityBugs using the web platform or a mobile application, reporting any relevant issue whether garbage removal, health care problems, missing zebras and street lighting, or infrastructure for the disabled. Using Community Action Groups, CityBugs activates youth to overcome apathy, low self-esteem and meaningless participation in doubtful associations to learn volunteerism & e-volunteerism, open up career paths and discover the value of action for the common good, while improving services.

SEMINAR: Evaluating Impact: NLab, Amplified Leicester, and creative innovation via social media Wednesday 8th June 2011, 4pm at the Institute of Creative Technologies De Montfort University, Leicester, UK . Since 2005, DMU has initiated a series of projects which share a common focus of exploring social media as a means of stimulating creative innovation in business, non-profit, and community life in and around Leicester. They include NLab and CreativeCoffee Club (funded by HEIF, the Higher Education Innovation Fund) and Amplified Leicester (funded by NESTA, the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts). Professor Sue Thomas has devised and directed these activities across the Faculty of Humanities and the Institute of Creative Technologies. Emergence has been a dominant feature of all the projects and, despite being driven by different agendas, each has informed the shaping of the others. An important element has been the creation and evolution of spaces, both physical and intellectual, which support: * the application of academic research to real-life problems * the connection of cutting-edge research into social media innovation with local creative businesses * the creation of a network linking De Montfort University with small businesses, non-profits, and local agencies Dr Souvik Mukherjee has evaluated the impact of these projects both in relation to their importance for the Research Excellence Framework and with regard to indications of future developments building on current achievements. In the process, he has also gleaned valuable insights into the REF Impact agenda which will be of interest to colleagues in a wide range of disciplines. Dr Mukherjee is a Research fellow in the Department of Media, Film and Journalism in the Faculty of Humanities. He is currently involved in analysing the impact of social media projects on communities, especially in relation to business innovation and transliteracy. Having completed his PhD on storytelling in New Media, especially focusing on videogame narratives, Souvik has published and presented papers on a range of related topics. Besides New Media, he also takes a keen interest in e-learning and has been involved in analysing online media and virtual learning network usage in higher education. After completing his project at DMU, Souvik intends to return home to India to develop New Media research networks there.

The network effect is one of the most vital competitive advantages, and it can also rapidly change the firms to the lead in new industries/businesses .A network effect is a phenomenon when a service/product becomes more valuable as the number of people who use it increases, thereby encouraging the numbers of adopters. It can also occur when other firms make products/services that is ancillary to an existing product/services, hence increases that product's value. The classic example of the Network effects is the telephone. The more the number of people who own telephones, the more is the value of the telephone network is to each owner. The network effect is quite often the result of word-of-mouth activities.

Since 2005, when the term “Big Data” was launched, Big Data has become an increasingly topical theme. In terms of technological development and business adoption, the domain of Big Data has made powerful advances; and that is putting it mildly. In this initial report on Big Data, the first of four, we give answers to questions concerning what exactly Big Data is, where it differs from existing data classification, how the transformative potential of Big Data can be estimated, and what the current situation (2012) is with regard to adoption and planning. VINT attempts to create clarity in these developments by presenting experiences and visions in perspective: objectively and laced with examples. But not all answers, not by a long way, are readily available. Indeed, more questions will arise – about the roadmap, for example, that you wish to use for Big Data. Or about governance. Or about the way you may have to revamp your organization. About the privacy issues that Big Data raises, such as those involving social analytics. And about the structures that new algorithms and systems will probably bring us. http://www.ict-books.com/books/inspiration-trends

Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) is the most popular style of large language model application to emerge from 2023. The most basic style of RAG works by vectorizing your data and injecting it into a vector database like Milvus for retrieval to augment the text output generated by an LLM. This is just the beginning. One of the ways that we can extend RAG, and extend AI, is through multilingual use cases. Typical RAG is done in English using embedding models that are trained in English. In this talk, we’ll explore how RAG could work in languages other than English. We’ll explore French, Chinese, and Polish.

Explore how multimodal embeddings work with Milvus. We will see how you can explore a popular multimodal model - CLIP - on a popular dataset - CIFAR 10. You use CLIP to create the embeddings of the input data, Milvus to store the embeddings of the multimodal data (sometimes termed “multimodal embeddings”), and we will then explore the embeddings.
