Learn best practices in ELL and find out how the Edmentum Reading Suite helps support English language learners while developing English language proficiency.
ESL ReadingSmart supports language acquisition by providing instruction covering all 4 lanuage processes: Listening, Speaking, Reading & Writing. ESL ReadingSmart has built in scaffolds for ELL students; audio, visual, vocabulary development, reinforcement of content in multiple learning activities, working at their own pace, extension activities and rigor as students move through the program. Taking the placement test ensures students are working at an appropriate level. However, the program also allows teachers to pull content for specific topics or objectives for additional practice or whole class instruction.
Language and Social Development
The combination of activities within each theme ensures that a broad and rich curriculum is offered to support ELLs and improve their academic, social and inter-personal communicative language needs. For a beginning English student, learning the vocabulary for classroom objects and social cues are just as important as learning that week’s Language Arts or Math lesson.
Grade Level Content Instruction
Learn English content is organized according to EducationCity’s English Language proficiency standards and incorporates not only English development, but also Math, Social Studies, Science and Reading and Writing. Keeping ELLs on pace with the rest of your class is a huge task and Learn English helps you do just that.
Independent Learning
Supporting ELLs means teaching them English. But, it also means building a child’s confidence and setting them on the path to independence and achievement. Learn English encourages independent learning through learn areas, dictionaries, intuitive icons, on-screen prompts, and full audio support offering rewards for correct responses and encouragement to try again for incorrect responses.

SI aligns with RTI and helps students by, practicing skills taught within the classroom.
The Study Island program reinforces those skills through immediate corrective feedback and targeted remediation of
specific skills and objectives.
Instructors can use the administrative features of the Study Island program to set the proficiency
standards for mastery of objectives to match the required proficiency levels of their state and then
monitor student progress of the class as a whole toward meeting those proficiency levels. When
students fall short of the requisite proficiency levels or begin to demonstrate predictable difficulties
with a set of objectives, educators can group these students together based on their general need.
The ongoing progress monitoring system of Study
Island can alert instructors when students are
becoming non-responsive to Tier 2 interventions
or continually struggling with on-grade-level material. In these cases, students may need instruction
that is more intensive or need to practice with lower-grade-level material. Through the automatic
building block feature of the program, Study Island can immediately use student performance data to
shift lessons down to built-in, automatic remediation topics at lower grade levels, providing students
with the opportunity to build the skill background necessary to be successful with higher-level skills..

Reading Eggs is a wonderful resource for your elementary level ELL students. Because it is a Learn to Read program, it covers the 5 Pillars of Reading. With the audio and visual support, as well a reinforcement and repetition, it is a great tool for language acquisition as well.
When working in your districts, if you have a need for a program in the lower grade levels, you can position Reading Eggs and Reading Eggspress, and then transition into ESL ReadingSMART/Reading Mate for your upper grade levels.
