History
Buy Edwin Jeans, which is an anagram of denim (with the “m” upside down), was founded in
1947 by KK Tsunemi. At the time, denim was not manufactured in Japan, and Tsunemi had such
passion for denim that he imported second hand jeans from the US, which would then have to
be washed and mended by hand before being sold.
In 1951, Japan began producing both cotton and denim, but it was low quality and expensive.
Tsunemi used this for comparing the materials, and made him determined to produce his own
fabric.
Then in 1961, the first Edwin Jeans were created and reached the market. Tsunemi wanted his
products to be perfect in everything, fit, quality, workmanship, innovation and fresh designs. By

by the legendary three colored rainbow selvedge, which is still in use today.
The company is now owned by Tsunemi’s son, which has a flagship store in Tokyo, is available in

Washing techniques
The brand has revolutionized denim washing techniques. In 1975, having already introduced the
“one wash” in 1963, Edwin Jeans were the first company in the world to pioneer the
manufacture of the “pre-washed” jeans, a section that is dominating the jeans market today.
Then in the 1980s, Edwin invented “stone washing”, which was a critical moment in the
evolution of the denim industry, and has thus influenced every denim company that exists
today. In the 1990s, Edwin also created the “new vintage” concept.
Products
Edwin Jeans actually make other clothes now as well, such as jackets, belts and hats, but are still
renowned and most famous for their jeans. Their most popular product is the 503 jeans, which
was first sold in 1997. Other popular pieces include the ED-47 which have a classic fit and a fairly
low waist, and the Nashville which have been in production over 20 years. Each pair of jeans
have a unique code printed on the inside, which means all jeans can be traced ‘when’, ’where’,
‘who’ and ‘how’, through its production process.
