Bihar lies between 24° 20' and 27° -31' North latitude and 82° 19' and
88° 17' East longitude. With a total area of 94,163 square kilometers,
Bihar is the 12 largest state in India.
Bihar is situated in the Indo – Gangetic plain and has a logically lush
soil. Bihar is chiefly a gigantic elongation of very productive even land.
Bihar plain is divided into two unequal halves (North Bihar and South
Bihar) by the river Ganges[4] which flows through the middle from west
to east. Bihar's land has average elevation above sea level is 173 feet.

agriculture sector to boost up the production of grains and value added
products. The main crops and produce (Grains, Fruits & Vegetables all
together) of the state are as follows-
paddy, wheat, maize and pulses. Main cash crops are sugarcane, potato,

12. Textile Industry (Handloom & Silk)
Textile is among the nine sectors or thrust

are many areas in Bihar which are known for
small-scale textile units. The major locations
for the textile industry are Bhagalpur, Gaya,
Nalanda, Darbhanga, Madhubani, Siwan and
Patna.

14. There are about 83 thousand handlooms in the Bihar and the number of
weavers is approximately 1.3lakh. The major weaving areas are
Madhubani, Gaya, Nalanda, Bhagalpur, Katoria, Patna district etc. There
are 2 weavers’ cooperative institutions at the state level and 6 at the
regional level.
It also coordinates the functions of training, marketing, funding, economic
research and Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme
(PMEGP). The Khadi and Village Industries Board at the state level has its
district level offices, through which it operates in promotion of village
industries.

15. Indian silk industry is one of the largest generators of employment and
foreign exchange for the country. India enjoys a unique global position in
terms of production of all commercially useful varieties of silk.
In Bihar, Bhagalpur region has the great potential of silk industry. More
than a century old Tussar silk weaving industry in Bhagalpur has about
30,000 handloom weavers working on some 25,000 handlooms. The total
value of annual trade is around Rs. 100 crores, about half of which comes
from exports.

the existing sugar mills are also planning to expand their crushing

"The climate of Bihar is very suitable for cane production. In comparison
with southern states, the crop, in Bihar, just needs two rounds of
irrigation. Of the total cultivable area of 54 lakh hectares in the state, only
4.41 percent is covered under the sugarcane cultivation, and there is
ample scope for increasing the area under sugarcane cultivation.

22. Bihar produces good quality of cattle hides and goat skins in large quantity.
The state occupies third rank in the country, next only to West Bengal and
Rajasthan, in terms of availability of hides and skins. Hence, leather based
industry has a great potential in the state. As per the recent survey
conducted by Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI), Bihar produces
annually 2.64 million bovine hides and 5.09 million bovine skins. More
than the number, Bihar is known for its best quality goat skins, cow hides
and calf skins.
Leather-based industries have vast potential in the state owing to Bihar’s
rich cattle population and the high quality of their hides. There are 50,000
footwear artisans in the state.

23. There are 85 leather units, of which 20 manufacturing units each are
located in Patna, Muzaffarpur and Bettiah, and the remaining 25 units
take up only job work.
The leather tanning industry consists of units established under the Bihar
Leather Development Corporation (BLDC) and its sister concern, the Bihar
Finished Leather Ltd; private tanneries operate at Muzaffarpur (six
tanneries in the industrial area at Muzaffarpur) and Mokhamehghat. State
has tanneries as well as footwear units in the private sector. There is
abundant skilled labour available in the State.
