It was written in 1215
It took power from the Monarchs.
This law stated Monarchs had to get confirmation from
Parliament before passing a law. Creating a Rule of Law system.
4. The English Bill of Rights
1689
The English Bill of Rights stated that Monarchs couldn’t pass or
get rid of laws without the confirmation of Parliament. It also
gave citizens freedom from cruel and unusual punishment.
5. The Enlightenment
The Enlightenment was a time of philosophical thinking. A time
when great thinkers started using reason and science.
Took place in the 18th century
6. Charles-Louis Montesquieu
He was from Bordeaux
Montesquieu came up with the idea of having three branches of
government all under the Rule of Law. This method is used here
in America.
7. John Locke
Born in Wrington
1632-1704
Natural Right is the political belief that a person is born with
specific rights that the government cannot take away.
9. Thomas Jefferson
Shadwell, Virginia
Declaration of Independence
“property” was changed to “pursuit of happiness” because they
were to be inalienable rights. Meaning that it couldn’t be taken
away from you.
