De term nanotechnologie is afgeleid van het Oudgriekse woord 'nanos', dat dwerg betekent. Een ‘nanometer’ is één miljardste deel van een meter of 50000 maal kleiner dan de diameter van een mensenhaar en ongeveer tienmaal groter dan de diameter van een atoom. Op die kleine schaal heersen andere wetmatigheden . Daardoor vertonen nanoscopische voorwerpen en materialen dikwijls merkwaardige eigenschappen die volledig afwijken van de macroscopische eigenschappen die we kennen. Het is een grote wetenschappelijke en technologische uitdaging om deze eigenschappen te benutten. Daarom worden technieken ontwikkeld om structuren of materialen van onderuit op te bouwen, met als ultieme doel de manipulatie van de individuele atomen en moleculen. Dit is het terrein van de nanotechnologie..
Op dit ogenblik zijn wetenschappers uit verschillende disciplines verwoed bezig om allerhande nanostructuren te fabriceren en te analyseren om nieuwe fenomenen te ontdekken en te bestuderen . Men inspireert zich daarbij op de natuur zelf, die een inspiratiebron is voor de nanotechnoloog. Zo assembleert een cel, uitgaande van eenvoudige basismoleculen heel complexe biologische nanostructuren zoals DNA moleculen en eiwitten en plaatst ze op perfecte wijze in mekaar. Verwacht wordt dat nanotechnologie een radicale omkering kan inluiden een sleuteltechnologie wordt voor de 21ste eeuw. De mogelijkheid om op nanoschaal bouwblokken te synthetiseren met precies gecontroleerde afmetingen en samenstelling en die samen te voegen tot grotere structuren met unieke eigenschappen en functies zal een revolutie veroorzaken in bepaalde segmenten van de materiaal producerende industrie. Daarom worden in de meeste landen de onderzoeksinspanningen opgevoerd.
Volgens sommigen zal nanotechnologie zelfs de biomedische en farmaceutische technologie van vandaag overtreffen wat betreft impact op de samenleving op alle gebieden, van duurzame producten tot militaire toepassingen. Veel materialen, elektronica, en medische toepassingen zullen binnen 20 jaar op de markt verschijnen.
Op de echt lange termijn zet nanotechnologie misschien zelfs onze ideeën over ‘leven’ op de helling en roept ze zelfs ethische bezwaren op.

A p-n junction is formed by placing p-type and n-type semiconductors next to one another.
The p-type, with one less electron, attracts the surplus electron from the n-type to stabilize
itself. Thus the electricity is displaced and generates a flow of electrons, otherwise known as
electricity. When sunlight hits the semiconductor, an electron springs up and is attracted
toward the n-type semiconductor. This causes more negatives in the n-type semiconductors
