3. Multiculturalism
and the EU
In every mobility a debate is held. The goal is
to foster critical thinking and a healthy
exchange of ideas that we hope will spark
creative solutions and help develop stronger
bonds between our students.
During the Madeiran mobility the main topic at
hand was Multiculturalism. All school partner
communities looked into its meaning and its
differences from interculturalism, their
advantages and disadvantages, good and bad
examples of multiculturalism in each country /
region as well as the history of multiculturalism
in each country.

GUIDELINES
5. Prior to the actual debate in Madeira island, all members of every partner's
school community had the opportunity to share their views on the topic by
contributing to the discussion held online on Flipgrid. Fifty videos were created
generating over 2000 views and nearly 84 hours of engagement.

DEBATINGONLINE
6. On the 9th of May, Europe Day, students and teachers taking part in the No Man is
an Island project gathered in the Madeiran Legislative Assembly to participate in ta
debate about multiculturalism and the European Union.
The debate, which took place in the Committee Room, was attended by the head
of Europe Direct Madeira, Marco Teles, and the President of the Legislative
Assembly, Tranquada Gomes, who opened the event with a short speech
welcoming all participants and addressed the students participating in the debate,
noting that at a time when there is talk of a crisis in Europe, this type of activities
highlights the importance of extolling the fundamental values for the success of the
European project: citizenship, tolerance and respect for others.
The debate lasted about 40 minutes and after a short break the teams had the
opportunity to present how their school/country dealt with any issues raised by
multiculturalism with the aim of promoting the sharing of good practices in each
region.
After the debate, students and teachers learnt a bit more about the history and
culture of Madeirans through a guided tour of the Legislative Assembly
headquarters.
