This document outlines a research project comparing Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto to the ancient Agora in Athens. The project aims to examine what makes a public square successful by studying the history and functions of both spaces. The theoretical framework draws on concepts of openness, exclusion, community involvement, and sustainability from urban scholars. Methodologies will include personal observation, interviews with planners and workers, archive research, and photograph analysis to understand how the square is used and perceived. Future progress includes planned interviews in March and observation once weather improves to further data collection.
