The Travel and Tourism
       Industry
What is tourism?

• It is when people travel away from where
they live for reasons of business, leisure or
recreation, for not more than a year before
  they come home.
• Lots of businesses work together to
provide goods and services for tourists.
www.visitbritain.com
• This website is very
    useful for anyone who
    wants to visit Britain.

• It shows places and
    attractions people might
    want to visit.

• It tells people how to
    travel there and what
    transport they might use
    - bus, train, plane, coach.
• www.visitbritain shows tourists where they
can stay as it gives help with finding
  accommodation.

• You can also find out what to do - which
tourist attractions there are and what
  activities there are.
Here are five businesses that provide services to
                   tourists.
• Tour Operators provide information and
advice and can book travel, accommodation
  and tickets for attractions.

• Hotels and bed and breakfast businesses
  provide accommodation and food.

• Trains, buses, coaches and plane companies
  provide transport.

• Other businesses provide tourist
attractions like fair rides and museums.
• Local organisations and businesses give
information and guided visits and help
  visitors find what they need.
1. 2. 3. 4.

5.

Which services are provided by each of the
businesses you can see in the pictures?
The service providers are linked in
 different ways. Train companies promote
attractions so that people will want to buy
train tickets to visit them. What attraction
is being promoted in this video?
What types of accommodation
   are advertised by the
 Colchester tourist office?
Businesses in the travel
  industry are linked.
• They work together to provide services and
  goods for tourists.
• They jointly own some businesses - tour
operators may have their own hotel or
  airline for example.
• They support each other - a local tourist
office will help a local hotel by having its
leaflet in the office or a local bus company’s
  excursions.
The role of the service providers, the
  tourism businesses, is to:

• supply products: food, drinks, travel tickets,
  hotel rooms, souvenirs, postcards

• supply services: give information, coach
tours, book flights, fair rides, give advice

• They make money (profit) for those who
  work in the tourist industry.
What types of tourists are there?

• families, retired people, young adults, school
  children, people with special needs.

• What is a tourist? It is someone who travel
away from home for less than a year. Tourists
can travel for leisure (holidays), work or
  recreation (watching sport, rock-climbing).
Tourists
What needs do tourists have?

• They need accurate information for example
  directions, about facilities (disabled, cots,
highchairs, special diets), about prices and if
  rooms or flights are available.

• They need advice: is a resort noisy or quiet,
how to obtain a visa, how to solve a
  problem.
• Tourists sometimes need help -
  perhaps with small children or
because they are old or disabled.
The facilities and services needed by a
  tourist might be:

• sport facilities - a gym, swimming pool or
  fitness centre

• shopping facilities - places to buy food,
  clothes or souvenirs

• flat surfaces and ramps for wheelchairs
Try answering these questions. The answers are all in the
slideshow so just play it again if you are not sure.

            1. What is a definition of tourism?
                    2. What is a tourist?
 3. What types of tourists are there? Name at least 3.
    4. What needs to tourists have? Name at least 5.
 5. What facilities and services are needed by tourists?
                         Name 5.
6. Can you name 5 businesses that provide services in
                   the tourism industry?
7. What is the role of service providers in the tourism
industry? Can you think of three examples?
8. What links are there between the service providers?
                        Name three.
