The document makes an extended metaphor comparing women's health and healthcare to maintaining a high performance car like a Ferrari. It notes that while women's bodies are highly functional and resilient, their healthcare needs are underserved with many expenses like birth control and prenatal vitamins not being covered. It encourages men to advocate for better healthcare policies that support women and to express their care, love, and support for the women in their lives through attentive "maintenance."

Ignite Reno April 8, 2010 by Elisa Maser http://www.flickr.com/photos/leapkye/2339478986/ OK … honestly … your wife may not be a “ferrari” .. But she sure as hell isn’t some junker. NO! You’re with her because she’s a world class thrill ride. A marvel of modern elegance. Smart AND sexy. LIKE YOUR CAR
This has been around for a long time … but Like a Toyota Executive, I just have to ask .. Is it the management system, or is it “operator error”?
What’s that saying ? If it’s got tits or tires, it’s going to be trouble? There’s upkeep involved. If you get a little exasperated with her over changing the oil … imagine how she feels about your grasp of the maintenance she’s got go through. Pic: http://www.flickr.com/photos/rgt3/3640294805/ I’m not saying she’s driving something out of her league … You probably drive something similar … you may even drive the same car … Even if you DO drive the same car … and by car … I mean HEALTH CARE … it is a little more involved for her.
Even if you DO drive the same car … and by car … I mean HEALTH CARE … it is a little more involved for her. It’s a little better with health care reform … which is why that is such a big fucking deal.
How much more involved? Let’s say you’re buying a new car (health care) – you’ve got your trade in money, so we’re just looking at “out of pocket” expenses, the cash you have to come up with.
If we were ACTUALLY talking about a car, the average cost of a car (in 2008) was … was $25,200 . Higher deductibles, copays and more out of pocket expenses, for stuff that’s not covered mean famlies are paying about $12,000 out of pocket (plus $13,000 for premiums) so YEAH - $25,000 A YEAR.. For the last quarter before Nov 2008: http://comerica.mediaroom.com/index.php?s=press_releases&item=959 http://www.healthreform.gov/reports/hiddencosts/index.html Higher deductible: $5,329; out of pocket $7,280 = $12,609 http://healthreform.gov/reports/families/ Annual family premium $13,375.
And just like women end up being charged more by CERTAIN mechanics … women pay more A LOT MORE for out of pocket medical expenses than men do But according to the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, (Here: http://www.iwpr.org/pdf/Summer03NL.pdf) The fact is that in their reproductive years, women pay 68 percent more in out-of pocket medical expenses than men, largely due to the pro- hibitive costs of reproductive health care. http://www.healthreform.gov/reports/out_of_pocket/index.html
Which brings the cost of that new car to $42,336. ($25,200 *0.68 = $42,336.) OK … remember this is a METAPHOR …. Meaning, she’s paying 68% more for health care EVERY YEAR. SAME health care.
You don’t buy it to park it … you’re going to live! Meaning you’re going to insure it and then you’re going to drive it. Which costs money. For a car, about $8000 a year. According to AAA annual survey of maintenance Being the clever consumer, , etc.
You won’t be surprised to hear that before health care reform … women were paying as much as 50% more for their health insurance than men … which would bring the cost of insurance to about $12grand (for comparison) According to the New York Times, women pay as much as 50% more than men for health insurance. <div xmlns:cc=&quot;http://creativecommons.org/ns#&quot; about=&quot;http://www.flickr.com/photos/brandonschauer/223090947/&quot;><a rel=&quot;cc:attributionURL&quot; href=&quot;http://www.flickr.com/photos/brandonschauer/&quot;>http://www.flickr.com/photos/brandonschauer/</a> / <a rel=&quot;license&quot; href=&quot;http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/&quot;>CC BY-SA 2.0</a></div>
OK, the car costs more, the insurance costs more, but … everything’s taken care of, right? No it’s sort of like the walls in this picture: birth control? Not covered. Prenatal vitamins? Not covered. Pregnancy? Probably not covered. <div xmlns:cc=&quot;http://creativecommons.org/ns#&quot; about=&quot;http://www.flickr.com/photos/freeparking/3096742730/&quot;><a rel=&quot;cc:attributionURL&quot; href=&quot;http://www.flickr.com/photos/freeparking/&quot;>http://www.flickr.com/photos/freeparking/</a> / <a rel=&quot;license&quot; href=&quot;http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/&quot;>CC BY 2.0</a></div>
Look, said the insurance companies before reform. This is your WIFE we’re talking about. You’re going to spend more on her than you spend on yourself, right? OK – but the upkeep, the maintenance schedule is the same … isn’t it? Women are trained as engine mechanics in thorough Douglas training methods, Douglas Aircraft Company, Long Beach, Calif. Let’s summarize: SAME car / health care: Costs her more Insurance: costs her more Coverage: covers her less
Which brings us to the maintenance schedule. We’re talking about your thrill ride here. She needs some TLC. You don’t just change the oil 4 times a year on this baby. Oh no. <div xmlns:cc=&quot;http://creativecommons.org/ns#&quot; about=&quot;http://www.flickr.com/photos/jorgecorrea/2286850248/&quot;><a rel=&quot;cc:attributionURL&quot; href=&quot;http://www.flickr.com/photos/jorgecorrea/&quot;>http://www.flickr.com/photos/jorgecorrea/</a> / <a rel=&quot;license&quot; href=&quot;http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/&quot;>CC BY 2.0</a></div>
And when we say oil change .. We mean how often she goes in for a regular check up compared to you guys. Comparing that to car care … that’s an oil change – not 4 times a year, but 17 times a year. About every 3 weeks. >>>>> in stead of changing every 3,000 miles (four times a year) … you’re looking at 17 times a year (every 700 miles, every 3 weeks) And you’ll like it … if you know what’s good for you. <div xmlns:cc=&quot;http://creativecommons.org/ns#&quot; about=&quot;http://www.flickr.com/photos/northbaywanderer/121971571/&quot;><a rel=&quot;cc:attributionURL&quot; href=&quot;http://www.flickr.com/photos/northbaywanderer/&quot;>http://www.flickr.com/photos/northbaywanderer/</a> / <a rel=&quot;license&quot; href=&quot;http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/&quot;>CC BY-SA 2.0</a></div>
LOOK – my goal here is to help you see just how much your two main loves have in common. And to encourage you to lavish love and attention on both of them. I’m not the ONLY one who sees the similarities though:
What can you do? Talk dirty to your elected officials!!!! They’re working on health care policy … make sure they take care of your needs!!!! http://www.flickr.com/photos/walkadog/3556095314/
It’s more work and more expensive for her … but SO worth it. Use the coupon <div xmlns:cc=&quot;http://creativecommons.org/ns#&quot; about=&quot;http://www.flickr.com/photos/27398485@N08/3738505442/&quot;><a rel=&quot;cc:attributionURL&quot; href=&quot;http://www.flickr.com/photos/27398485@N08/&quot;>http://www.flickr.com/photos/27398485@N08/</a> / <a rel=&quot;license&quot; href=&quot;http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/&quot;>CC BY-SA 2.0</a></div>
Let her know you appreciate the fact that she takes care of herself. Do your part … just like with a car … proper lubrication IS important. <div xmlns:cc=&quot;http://creativecommons.org/ns#&quot; about=&quot;http://www.flickr.com/photos/myvintagehut/3253402675/&quot;><a rel=&quot;cc:attributionURL&quot; href=&quot;http://www.flickr.com/photos/myvintagehut/&quot;>http://www.flickr.com/photos/myvintagehut/</a> / <a rel=&quot;license&quot; href=&quot;http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/&quot;>CC BY-SA 2.0</a></div>
And that’s it! With proper care and maintenance … that’s just a little more involved than yours … she’ll always be your world class thrill maching.
