ERP software originated in the 1980s when companies began using accounting software modules to automate functions like accounts payable and receivable. One of the first true ERP products was developed by Macola Software, which integrated accounting and became very successful. ERP software expanded in the 1990s to work on larger computer systems and to integrate more business functions. Modern ERP offers a wide selection of options to meet the needs of companies across industries by integrating operations, managing data flow between departments and outside entities, and expanding capabilities over time.
1. The Early Days Of ERP Software
Over the past several years, companies throughout the U.S. and around the world have
realized the benefits of utilizing ERP (enterprise resource planning) software as a
means of automating and streamlining many of their internal day-to-day functions. This
amazing technology effectively integrates almost every facet of business, including
finance and accounting; sales and customer service; marketing; manufacturing; product
distribution; workflow documents; customer relationship management; human
resources; and more. Thanks to ERP software, information can flow freely between
different departments within the same company, as well as to entities outside the
business, such as vendors and customers.
While there’s no doubt about the benefits that ERP software provides to companies in
virtually all industries, that hasn’t always been the case. In fact, until the 1980s, when
computers became commonplace in modern business, ERP software didn’t even exist.
How it All Began
Back in the 1980s, businesses used primarily personal computers. Even at that early
stage, it became obvious to engineers that software modules designed to handle
accounting functions – accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, etc. –
would provide an enormous benefit to companies. It was at that time that a company
called MCBA developed the first such modules. A short time later, Macola Software
designed one of the first true ERP products, which was based on the original MCBA
modules. The Macola accounting software proved to be a huge success.
Later, in the 1990s, when large-scale computer systems became commonplace, Macola
Software expanded their products to accommodate the ever-evolving computer
technology. It was then, in the 1990s, when we first began seeing a wide variety of ERP
products on the market from many different companies. The capabilities of these newer
products far exceeded those of the original Macola accounting modules. The ERP
software packages that became available in the 1990s more closely resemble those
that we see today.
Modern ERP Technology
When you’re shopping for the right ERP software for your company, you may very well
be pleasantly surprised by the huge selection available. You’ll find, almost literally,
something for everyone in the selection of modern ERP software. No matter what size
2. company you have, or what industry you’re in, there’s sure to be a product perfect for
your application.
In the years since the 1990s, ERP software technology has expanded to include
website design, e-business and e-commerce solutions, and even front-end interfaces
designed to integrate with a “behind-the-scenes” ERP package. There’s no doubt that
business needs have changed markedly over the past 35 years, but one thing has
remained constant – streamlining your business as much as possible is one of the most
important things you can do to ensure your company’s success. In this day and age,
that means one thing – ERP software!
