The great challenge to museum architecture lies in providing for the often conflicting uses of the building. On one hand, the important objects in the collection must be preserved, and preservation often requires very specific environments. On the other hand, museums make parts of their collection available to the public, so the environment must be comfortable for people, enabling their movement through the space and providing for their safety.

A design museum is a museum with a focus on product, industrial, graphic, fashion and architectural design. Many design museums were founded as museums for applied arts or decorative arts and started only in the late 20th century to collect design. The first museum of this kind was the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. In Germany the first museum of decorative arts was the Deutsches-Gewerbe-Museum zu Berlin (now Kunstgewerbemuseum), founded in 1868 in Berlin.[1] Also some museums of contemporary or modern art have important design collections, like the MoMA in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris. A special concept has been realised in the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, in which four independent museums cooperate, one of them being Die Neue Sammlung – the largest design museum in the world. Today corporate museums like the Vitra Design Museum, Museo Alessi or Museo Kartell play an important role.

Museum Case Studies http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Museum A museum is an institution that cares for (conserves) a collection of artifacts and other objects of scientific, artistic, cultural, or historical importance and makes them available for public viewing through exhibits that may be permanent or temporary.[1] Most large museums are located in major cities throughout the world and more local ones exist in smaller cities, towns and even the countryside. Museums have varying aims, ranging from serving researchers and specialists to serving the general public. The continuing acceleration in the digitization of information, combined with the increasing capacity of digital information storage, is causing the traditional model of museums (i.e. as static "collections of collections" of three-dimensional specimens and artifacts) to expand to include virtual exhibits and high-resolution images of their collections for perusal, study, and exploration from any place with Internet.[citation needed] The city with the largest number of museums is Mexico City with over 128 museums. According to The World Museum Community, there are more than 55,000 museums in 202 countries.[2]

Architecture is the art of spaces. The human feelings were influenced by architectural space from time to time. Relating to the design of a history museum, it could evoke a certain feeling or memory of a historical event. This dissertation focuses on the influence of architectural space over period of times. A theoretical as well as practical key issue in the design of museum and galleries is how the layout of space interacts with displays to create a specific effect, express the intended message to visitors. This dissertation aims to capture and represent the history of mankind’s understanding of space in the design of an architectural building.

A keynote for the 2015 We are Museums Conference in Berlin, Germany. Museums… why should we care? Much has been written about the changes our culture is experiencing as institutions that once held a place of primary esteem have now somehow become less important than they once were. Museums are at the crux of this change and are wondering how we might preserve and bottle the relevance we hold with our audiences. At the same time, we find that relevance to be changing, ephemeral, and eroding. How should museums answer these fundamental questions about our impact and why we matter at all? When challenged to defend the public investment and trust that we have stewarded for so many years, are we prepared to give a good account? This is my Senior Thesis project for Harrington's BFA program in Interior Design. It's a 40,000 SF Alzheimer's/Memory Care Assisted Living Facility development in an old abandoned school building in Kenosha Wisconsin. The name, Bainbridge, comes from the name of the existing school building (Bain Elementary) and my design concept of "bridge" -- as in "making connections." The location was chosen not only for its architectural bones and the appropriateness of the neighborhood but also for the potential to add a glorius healing garden on the site.
