Emily Judge – Factual Program
OCTOBER 23, 2015
NEWS WAVE
Haydon School, Pinner
Final Proposal
Producer: Emily Judge
Production title: Factual Program
Introduction
The idea for this production is to create a factual program detailing a man who was stabbed
to death at the RE bar in Eastcote, the title of which should be short and to the point in
order to attract the target audience. The current title I have come up with is News Wave:
Factual Program, as it fits in with other more established news broadcasts such as BBC
News, ITV News and Fox News. Additionally, the connotations of ‘wave’ relate to surges
and outbursts, in this case, of information.
The production is going to contain opinions and conclusions on the knife crime debate and
on the stabbing that occurred 11/10/15 and I am hoping it will be a sort of information-rich
broadcast that will gain attention from the target audience and update them on current
goings-on. In order to avoid bias we will not show any type of opinion and only work with
facts and interviewees.
The production will be broadcasted daily, lasting a short amount of time for each showing.
This decision is based on research, which has shown that other news broadcasts tend
towards a daily publication in order to inform many people as frequently as they can. We
will show different issues of importance each day due to the target audience not learning
anything if we always keep the topic the same, therefore we must keep up with the news
and always broadcast the latest updates.
My aim is to create a production that will inform anyone keen in learning about the newest
affairs without showing any bias as I would like the production to be completely neutral.
As I already mentioned it is going to be an impartial news broadcast, which is quite popular
nowadays as it is neither right wing nor left wing. There are broadcasts focusing on
conservative ordeals and labour ordeals, which aren’t too popular with the overall
population; studies show that people would prefer a news broadcast without an opinion so
that they could make up their own mind about how they feel about current affairs.
The main focus will be on major global debates such as the migration issues, education, the
environment and less on celebrity appearances and events- I’ll leave that to broadcasts
such as MTV and Fox News. Our broadcast will feature seeing issues from every angle,
and research as many different opinions as we can find to get the best understanding of the
matter.
Primary research has been conducted in the form of interviews investigating people’s
thoughts on the serious stabbing event that has taken place. The feedback so far has been
very mixed from a range of interviews- this shows that we are not biased in any way. We
have also created an online survey at surveymonkey.com and shared it on social media
sites so that we get a wide range of feedback.
Distribution
The production will be broadcasted once daily on its own channel entitled ‘Daily Polygon’.
More than once daily would be too frequent for a newly established news broadcast,
additionally there would be too little time to complete complicated editing of the footage and
find suitable stories and interviewees to question. As it is an informative news broadcast, I
have to be sure content is detailed and precise, most of the production time being focused
on getting the correct information into the broadcast.
There is also the potentiality to broadcast it via a website or in some other streaming
format. However, costs and income need to be considered and subscriptions would have to
be set up online before users could access information. While this is a viable idea for the
modern market it would have to be considered at a later date, possibly once the news
broadcast has been established, as there will be costs involved in setting this up and
running it correctly.
It should be broadcasted in every possible place nationwide in order to attract as many
people as possible, it is a new news broadcast so people will need to get familiar with it and
get used to it. There should be a campaign to launch it prior to broadcasting and this should
be done on the internet via email or advertisements on social media sites. My research led
me to conclude that this is where the target audience spend most of their time and are more
likely to receive information from here rather than from an expensive and more complicated
TV ad.
In terms of income, I think there is quite a large competition for my production because my
research shows there are many other news broadcasts that are shown nationwide such as
ITV News and Channel 4 News. However, there are only a few, such as BBC News, that
are impartial and this may increase the chances of my production generating more income
for the company.
Target audience
My first thought about my target audience was that it will be a group of mostly adults looking
but some teenagers aged between 15 and 60. After some research I have decided to split
the age gap to 15-30 and 31-60, this is because most of my target audience will fit into the
15-30 category. Under 20s will pay less attention to the news, however, than over 30s. This
is because this age group is more mature and willing to learn about world affairs.
When looking into the market and audience I targeted my broadcast to anyone that would
like to hear a news broadcast that is completely impartial which focuses more on important
issues rather than celebrity news. A gap in the market existed for me since the only other
impartial news broadcast is the BBC News, which focuses on events that are international
and consists of viewers over the age of 30.
Final proposal
I intend to produce a factual program presented as a news broadcast, featuring headline
news detailing a serious story that will inform the viewers of something that could affect
them. The program will follow the conventions of a typical news broadcast featuring a studio
and actuality footage.
The news broadcast is going to be broadcasted daily, at 6pm, lasting a short amount of
time per showing. The cast will consist of three main crew members; one presenter, one
reporter and one camera operator. The broadcast will include a news ticker to detail the
main recent headlines, the time and a green screen so that we can edit the green colour
into a different image, e.g. city background or actuality footage.
The studio footage will feature a single presenter sat at a desk in formal wear who will
introduce the story. This will be filmed in front of a green screen in room 19 and a
newsroom backdrop will be generated using footage of a news studio.
The external segment will be shot at Eastcote high street and will feature a single reporter.
This reporter will conduct several interviews with passers-by. Actuality footage will be of the
high-street with people walking and a few back alleys around the area. A voice over for this
segment will be created using recording equipment from room 19.
The program will be entitled ‘News Wave’, broadcasted on its dedicated channel ‘Daily
Polygon’ which also shows other international news on sport and celebrities. The title was
chosen as it fits in with other more established news broadcasts such as BBC News, ITV
News and Fox News. Additionally, the connotations of ‘wave’ relate to surges and
outbursts, in this case, of information. It is also very short and catchy, and easy for the
populace to remember.
My target audience is going to be between the ages of 15 and 30, so we will be using bold
and serious font for text that may appear on the screen, for example on the news ticker and
the time. I also targeted my broadcast to anyone that would like to hear a news broadcast
that is completely impartial which focuses more on important issues rather than celebrity
news.
The news broadcast will inform anyone watching, on its first showing, with the current knife
crime debate and about the recent stabbing of Josh Hanson at a bar in Northwest London.
We will also inform viewers about how to stay safe after hours on the streets and in pubs,
and the increases and decreases of knife crime over the years. We will, from then on, we
will show different issues of importance each day due to the target audience not learning
anything if we always keep the topic the same, therefore we must keep up with the news
and always broadcast the latest updates.
Conclusion
In my opinion the biggest selling point is that the broadcast will be completely impartial, a
quality that is very unique in current news broadcasts. This will attract more viewers that do
not have a strong opinion on politics since we do not side with right wing nor left wing
views. I am confident that there is a gap in the market for me since the only other impartial
news broadcast is the BBC News, which focuses on events that are international and
consists of viewers over the age of 30.
The strengths of this broadcast would be the fact that it is brand new and exciting for the
populous; they will feel relieved and refreshed that there is finally a new impartial news
broadcast that isn’t overrated like broadcasts such as the BBC News. I think that the idea of
viewers being involved in reviewing and contributing news stories will be advantageous too.
This would make the broadcast more interactive and popular as usually the public has no
say on what the news broadcasts, whereas with the News Wave there would be
communication from broadcast to viewers and from viewers to broadcast; that has been
proven a very good selling point. As aforementioned I could also potentially broadcast it via
a website or in some other streaming format, thus creating the broadcast’s accessibility and
information-rich foundations.
Sources
Primary sources of information
http://www.surveymonkey.com
We produced a survey on this website to obtain information on what people think of the
stabbing and whether they feel safe in pubs or not.
Questionnaire
We handed out a questionnaire to a sample of students and adults to determine what their
opinions were and whether they thought knife crime is on the rise or not.
Secondary sources of information
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-34500696
This source of information on the murder was perhaps the most reliable, being held on the
UK’s most popular news website, BBC News.
http://www.standard.co.uk/news/crime/police-hunt-man-over-murder-of-clubber-at-eastcote-
wine-bar-a3089981.html
This source was helpful as it gave me objective data and told me who the police were
questioning, giving my research more depth.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-33547806
This site was helpful because it gave me insight on the current situation of knife crime, for
example I have found out that knife crime, after 4 years, has suddenly started to rise again
which is starting to make the Metropolitan Police question what has happened.
