The document discusses and compares two remote cultures. It notes that both cultures are seen as "stuck in the past" and not progressing with modern society, though the people in the cultures seem content with their way of life. It also notes some differences between the cultures, such as funeral practices, but also similarities to the author's own upbringing. Overall, the document suggests that while outsiders may view the cultures as in need of help to progress, the people in the cultures prefer to be left alone to continue living as they choose.
1. Remote Cultues
1) My overall impressionof bothculturesisthattheyare both “stuck inthe past” and are not
movingalongwithsociety. We lookatthemand see itas unfortunate, buttheyseemtolike the
livestheylead,andthatisall that matters.
2) Lots of thingsare impliedwithinthese cultures, forexample inthe amanabe (sorryforthe
terrible spelling) tribe, once apersonisdeceaseditissupposedtobe commpnsense thatyou
neverspeakof themagain.
3) These societiesdifferfrommine substantially;howeverJessecowhite’sisnotveryfarfrom
mine.Theyplace where Igrewup,CharlestonWV,isnottoo terriblyfarfromhisbirthplace,
and there were manypeople aroundme growingupwho’slivesresembledthatculture.
4) Again, the similarities betweenthe twoare that we lookat themas strange and wantto help
themprogresswiththe restof us,however,theydon’twantto.
5) These cultureswere probablycreatedatthe same time asall the othersthat resembledthem,
these justdidn’tcontinue to progress.
6) At leastforthe firstculture(amanabe)itwouldtakesyearsandyearstotry to integrate them
intoour society,itisprobablysafertoleave thembe andletthemdo whattheywant.However,
the culture of the White’scouldpossiblybe changed atsome point, butIwouldstill leave it
alone.
