Strengths And Weaknesses Of Academic Writing
Writing is a very helpful skill for most of the people who want to achieve success in their life.
Improving your writing skills is very helpful before entering the university. Students are facing a
lot of issues in their university because they are being asked to write academic essays, or scientific
papers, and they did not have the expected skills to write what is being asked from them. On the
other hand, those who have studied APA, and MLA in their high school, or by self
–learning, are more
likely to get high scores in their universities academic essays than those who did not. Those who
have studied academic writing are having a big chance to achieve their goals in their university life
because most of the courses in the university requires...show more content...
My point of weakness is that I always go off topic, and I think most of the students do that in the
beginning of their academic papers practices. It is not easy to stay on topic. However, I have learned
some techniques that made me able to stay on topic, and I would like to mention them to students to
avoid making my mistakes. First, students could make an outline before writing their final draft, and
submit it. This has helped me so much in organizing my paper, and making it easy for me follow up
with the points that I want to talk about without going off topic. Second, students should have a
strong thesis statement, and restating it in each paragraph. By restating your thesis statement, you
are not only making the reader following up with your points, but you are also making your thesis
statement stronger because it has been mentioned in many paragraphs with different examples.
Lastly, students should use transition words in their essay. Transition words helps the reader to
progress from one idea to the next. Therefore, students should learn how to write academic essays,
and take it more seriously because it could improve their

What I Learned For Myself As A Writer
I learned that when you write a paper you should know who your audience is and their level of
knowledge, beginner writer tends to generalize their audience and that result from being
misunderstood or misinterpret by their audience so know your audience is essential to be a good
writer, Also I learned that everything in your paragraph must have a connection to each other, first
it is important to have a clear topic sentence follow by 3 good example that prove the point of the
topic sentence and finish by conclusion, a conclusion should is like a summarization of all the things
you have said in your writing.
What I learned for myself as a writer when I don't know where to begin and what to say, by learning

My Strengths And Weaknesses As A Writer
English classes are fundamental to a child's educational growth. My past English classes have
developed me into the student and writer I am today. My most recent English class, however, has
made the most substantial impact in my academic career. In my eleventh grade English III class I
learned not only the rules of proper citation, but also my strengths and weaknesses as a writer.
Previous to my junior year in high school, my English classes spent minimal time writing papers
where citing information from a text was required. As a result, I had much to learn going into my
English III class. I went from writing simple narratives to complex research papers. This elevation in
writing resulted in me having to learn the rules of citation. Mrs. Bingham, my eleventh grade English
teacher, assigned a research paper that required in–text citations. In order to give the publishers of
certain books and articles credit for the work they had done, I had to create a works cited page.
This works cited page reflected the work of other authors that I put into my research paper. I learned
that when creating a works cited page,...show more content...
Through grading my papers, Mrs. Bingham was able to identify the areas in which I needed to
improve my writing. At the forefront of these improvements was my incorrect use of pronoun
antecedent agreement. In my papers, the antecedent would not match the pronoun it was referring
to, thus leaving my sentences without clear meaning. Along with incorrect pronoun antecedent
agreement, I discovered that I repeated ideas and opinions in my papers. This restating of the same
information, not only resulted in a low grade, but also pointed to my inability to find more
information to discuss. Although my English III class brought to my attention the weaker points of
my writing, I was ultimately able to grow from this constructive criticism into a better

My Writing Style
Kim,
Thank you for allowing me to read your paper. This is a great start to a well written final product.
What do you like about the writing?
I enjoyed reading your paper. You have a writing style that invites the reader to fully engage your
argument. You presented a clear, logical presentation of course material combined with personal
insights and experiences that were well suited for your paper. It was a thorough and thoughtful
presentation of the material. Well done.
How is the writing objective (not overly subjective) communicating ideas with clarity?
You provided a nice balance of objectivity and subjectivity as your cited ample evidence for your
argumentation and interweaved personal reflections and anecdotes into the paper. Your did an
excellent job in using the breadth and depth of texts that were used in our classes, which made for
a well rounded paper. Apart from a few areas of your paper which may need to be reworded and
fine tuned, I would suggest defining a few of the terms that are used in your paper, to make their
meaning more clear to your reader (Weltanschauung, meaning perspective, distorted assumptions
etc.). These are noted in my comments on your paper....show more content...
Your writing provided an orderly and structured approach to the presentation of your argument. I
appreciated your use of citations to support your ideas, which helped the reader understand the
connection between leadership and inquiry. There were a number of instances in which you provide
overt transitions from one paragraph to another which promoted a pattern of thought that was easily
digestible. I would offer the suggestion to use section headings in the paper that correspond to your
key points. Occasionally, I was left wondering which section you were focusing on, even though it
was well

Reflective Essay: How Far I Done As A Writer
When looking back over the previous microthemes and papers I can see how far I have come as a
writer. At the beginning of the semester I was a poor writer who could not grasp the important
aspects of writing. I had many grammatical errors along with many underdeveloped thoughts. Even
though this class was only for a short period of time in order to learn how to write a proper academic
paper, I can see how far I have come. My papers may still be sub–par but in many aspects have come
a long way. I no longer have as many grammatical errors and can further express my thoughts in a
paper. Also by taking this class I have further developed revision skills bylearning new tricks such as
reading out loud and writing thoughts out as a brainstorming

English 101
October 19, 2016 Reflection Paper
It's hard to believe that it's already time for Midterms in my English 101 class. The adventure has
been a lot easier than I at first anticipated. In any case, I am happy that I am taking the class and
learning from it. In the beginning it appeared somewhat hard however I was resolved to compel my
way through this class regardless of what difficulties I needed to persevere.
On the first day of my English 101 class I was apprehensive, I had no clue what's in store from the
class. As I discovered what the class would have been similar to, I let myself know I was going to
attempt to get an B or higher toward the end of the semester and put all the exertion I had into each
paper I kept in touch with, I was not going to set this class aside for later and linger like I use to do.

I have an unmistakable view in my head of what I am going to compose and what structures I have
to utilize. Things have ended up less difficult now since I don't need to experience the battle of how
things are done or on the chance that I don't understand how I should do what I am expected to do.
These aptitudes may empower me to enjoy additionally composing and not need to stress over
having a written assignment.
This course has helped me with many chances to figure out how to properly write papers. Prior to
this class, I had little experience with how to build a legitimate paper. It has taken experience, and
getting normal evaluations, to show me how to precisely write. Despite the fact that this course
required different papers to be turned in, I am appreciative to have possessed the capacity to gain
from my oversights and develop as a writer. I have constantly cherished written work, however now

I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write
an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite
better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and
the "Common Sense" textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the
contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards.
Through the exploration of the "Subjects and Strategies" textbook, I have learned nine different
methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall
theme and tone of the essay when used properly. This past...show more content...
This allowed me to write more extensively on the topic I had chosen which in turn helped expand
the size of my research paper. I received a B on my final draft; the first passing grade I have ever
received on a research paper. I am very satisfied with my grade. When it came to the essays
writing became a little trickier because I had to understand what it was I needed to write about
and the style in which I need to write it in. There are nine essay writing methods which I learned
while attending this course: exemplification, compare/contrast, cause and effect, proposal,
narration, process, division/classification, definition, and argument. The only problems I
encountered when trying to write the essays that were assigned to me by the instructor was
finding suitable subject matter to write about. Once I found my topics for my essay, everything
else became easier. I would first produce a rough draft and then the students, the instructor, and
myself would go over them in class and decided if what I was writing was in its best form. Most
of my rough drafts needed improvement, but if it didn't it wouldn't be a rough draft, so it was
understood. My final drafts were very satisfying for me as well as the grades I received on them.
For my exemplification essay I chose to write about the reasons why condoms

Grit Essay Examples
Grit is a predictor of academic, professional, and personal success. Grit can be defined as strength
of character or the ability to overcome failure and continue to work toward success. People with
grit are not always the people with the most natural ability, but their work ethic and ability to
overcome obstacles allows them to achieve success. Grit is a very valuable characteristic in almost
any venture, as it gives someone an advantage in overcoming the inevitable obstacles they will face.
However, grit is much easier adopted when an individual has a growth mindset. The first step to
obtaining grit is to correlate both self–control and self–confidence when trying to reach an objective.
By doing this, one can focus on the task at hand...show more content...
I had no experience as a runner nor did I have the form. This did not phase me however. That year
I promised myself to push through all the six mile runs, sore legs, gnarly blisters, and at times,
lack of oxygen. At every meet and speed workout practice I pushed myself further and further. I
set a goal every time I kicked off from the starting line and never let myself get discouraged when
I failed. By my senior year, I was the fourth fastest runner on varsity. That year our varsity team
won the district meet, which qualified us to run in the 2016 state meet in Oregon. The
transformation over the years were evident. My determination to accomplish my goal of
becoming a faster runner was complete. If I had simply just given up that first day of practice, I
wouldn't have ran along side of the fastest runners in Oregon or have met the multitude of people
that are now my closest friends. Having a goal sets one up for a challenge, whether it being
physically or mentally, goals keep us active and thinking in more ways than one. Still, if someone
has self–control, confidence, and a goal, they are still not complete. Growth mindset is the cone to
an ice cream. It is the foundation of what I think a successful person is. Without it one couldn't use
the characteristics mentioned above in more ways than one. Someone with a growth mindset believe
that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work, brains and talent
are just the starting point.

The company's creams inventory remains constant because it does not follow a trend in
innovation and changes so often as the other products. The surplus in inventory is a big
disadvantage since; last year's products may not be in style this year in addition to the cost of
storage. For all these reasons their cash flow is less in comparison with previous years causing that
Luxor Cosmetics keeps increasing their bank loans, creating more debt, making it harder to pay out
as 2011. In this particular situation the company could have either decrease its budgeted sales
(productions) or increase its actual sales by improving more effective marketing strategy and
research and development of its products in the markets. This way their inventory would decrease
and their cash flow would increase. (Hopkins, 2009)

Experience Of Writing
Writing, it has it's good, and it's bad. Regardless of who you are however, you have had an
experience with it. College, High School, Middle School, etc. We all have written something at
some point in our lives. Personally I haven't been exposed to massive amounts of writing outside
of school although, I do enjoy writing songs. There's many different types from Novels, Poetry,
Music, all the way to texting. Most people I feel enjoy writing and as do I. I enjoy writing for a few
reasons,One. It allows me to relieve stress or anything on my mind and keep sane. I have a
journal to keep track of days for later memories and I add to it every day. I have a few experiences
worth sharing as well. One of my first experiences seriously writing is when, I was in Highschool,
and had to write a speech. I spent four days writing this speech. Although it wasn't what you would
call outstandingly fun. The speech was for my graduation on the last day of school BSEP. BSEP
was a project all seniors had to complete and pass to graduate. I have been out of school for two
years since that experience....show more content...
I began writing songs about a year ago. The drive really came out of nowhere I wasn't in a very
good place emotionally. Since I was feeling kind of down I began to write songs mostly R&B and
as well as Hip Hop. Writing these however doesn't require much punctuation. I write a lot of
songs, and I have compiled about 30 total in the past year. I get a lot of good feedback from the
people who have heard them but I am very skittish about singing in front of people. I mostly do it
for self satisfaction in my own head it helps me relax. I'm also building a skill that might one day

Growing As A Writer
Growing as a Writer
From writing thoughtful poems to research papers, I have experienced composing a diverse
portfolio of literary analysis and criticisms throughout the school year. I started out the year
writing minimally. By the end of the year, I noticed I was able to express my ideas and thoughts in a
more clear and concise way on paper. Ultimately, each composition allowed me to widen my
horizons as a writer and see how I could improve as a writer.
After analyzing many of my written works, I highlighted my writing weaknesses along with notable
strengths. Evident in my earlier works, my vocabulary was more basic and was not as powerful
unlike my more recent essays. Seeking to improve, I started utilizing words I learned during the year

learned to advance my vocabulary and word choice in addition to incorporating a diversity of
sentence structure. Nearing the end of the school year, I acknowledge that I have grown and
learned more about writing. I anticipate that I will receive even more arduous writing
assignments that require more research and time. Although it will be challenging, I feel confident
that I will do well because I feel well prepared from all I've done this year. As I grow older, I will
have to continue to write. I know I can take the knowledge I've learned this year and apply it to
future papers for years to

The Journey of Writing Writing is something I enjoy doing to share my opinions and ideas.
During this english course, I have learned how to change my writing in ways that make it more
intriguing and effective. The essays I have written during this English 101 course have pushed
me to change my writing process and write more creatively. Those essays have also forced me to
reanalyze my personal opinions and beliefs. After taking this course, I believe that my identity as a

Another aspect that improved while taking English 101, was my writing process. Whenever I began
a new essay, I would create a list of ideas and a simple outline. These things allowed me to process
my ideas and arrange them in a way that made sense. Following these strategies helped me plan my
essays, but they did not allow me to branch my creativity or self–expression. This is because I had a
strict way of organizing my essay which denied me the ability to think creatively and write in
intriguing formats. For example, in my essay "The First Child", I was required to tell a true story
in a creative way. Before starting my paper, I wrote a list and outline which then lead me to write
a formal essay with no creativity or interesting hook. Therefore, when revising my essay I
interviewed the person who gave me their story and used index cards to organize my essay. I also
changed the format and looked for places where I could add more details and imagery. After
editing, my essay became more intriguing and had much more imagery that kept the reader
interested. This is one of my papers where I received good results and positive feedback after
submitting it. Furthermore, I learned through my work in this class that I struggle with conventions
and mechanics. After, submitting many of my essays, I noticed that in my feedback I had received
many notes about conventions, grammar, and punctuation. This revealed to me that I had to work on
proofreading my essay deeper and make

My Writing Experience
Reading and writing has always created a sense of understanding for me in my art. Reading in the
literal sense is a way that we understand text or symbols in our minds which in turn create meaning.
Writing also in a literal sense is our way of communicating our knowledge and emotions to others
through symbols in text. The human experience for all people includes communication and through
reading and writing this experience is created. From the beginning of this course, my only prior
experience with reading and writing were high school level course over literature and reading. I had
an average level of rhetoric, reading, writing and language overall however, understanding the
significance of these subjects was never put forth in such a way until I took this course. I discovered
through this course that reading is a combination of not only our "visual information" but also our
"nonvisual information". My comprehension of reading has evolved from reading...show more

I feel that organization is both a strength and a weakness in my writing. Free writing is something
that helped me gain a better sense of my ideas and through this I was able to create more structured
ideas. However, the formation of a structurally sound essay that contains writing that flows was
extremely difficult for myself. Fluidity was a challenge throughout my time in this course, but is
was also something that created a better voice in my writing. The understanding of reading and
writing in this course was extremely meaningful for me and made a huge impact on my writing
overall. Writing motivates me and inspires me in my own work to create stories and share with
others what I feel is memorable and should be shared. Although it may never be something perfect,
writing is something I wish to continue improving on and creating in order to share with

Becoming A Better Writer : Writing
Upon entering Columbia College, writing was one of my weaker areas. It was very important
that I gained the necessary knowledge and confidence to become a better writer. I didn't know
how to express myself and felt as though my writing was not my interest. As a result of taking
English 101, I have gained a better understanding on how to properly research and build a
satisfactory paper. Every paper that was assigned seemed like a struggle to complete. Before
entering this class, I did not know the meaning of a thesis or why it was important, however, I
obtained this skill quickly. I noticed that every paper has an argument and the thesis helps clarify
the rebuttal. Now, I have a new outlook on writing. It's a way to express my thoughts and allow
others to see things through my eyes. There is no doubt that I still have a long way to go, but I
know if I continue to write, I will get better. Just as I developed more skills in class, the various
papers assigned helped to better structure the writer in me. In addition, the subject areas were not
only interesting, but very informative and made it much easier to write about my experiences. This
portfolio demonstrates the strongest and the weakest of my writing as a first year college student
and as a rising professional of psychology major. As psychology students, we think beyond the norm
and obtain enormous amounts of research for proof, similar to English majors. As a result of

Essay about A Stroke
A stroke is a type of cardiovascular disease that affects the cerebral arteries, those blood vessels
that carry blood to the brain. A stroke occurs when one of those blood vessels in the brain is

occur quickly and may cause: sudden numbness, tingling, or weakness, or paralysis in your face,
arm, or leg, especially on one side of your body. Sudden: vision changes, trouble speaking (slurred

dramatically increase chances of prevention additional damage to the body (2). To have their
symptoms diagnosed, a person must first seek medical treatment. Only 20–25% of patients who are
admitted to the hospital with a stroke arrive in the emergency department within 3 hours of the

How To Write A Paper Airplane Essay
Paper Airplanes
My heart sunk as I stared at the empty page crumple into nothingness. My hands intricately folded
the blank paper and formed an airplane. My hand drew back and sent the plane flying. I grabbed

For ages, I walked around the room, trying to conjure a thought that I could build something off of.
Sadly, I found nothing.
I need something. I need one word. One word will send me to this epiphany of lyrics, an epiphany of

I grabbed another piece of paper. I folded it into an intricate paper airplane. I drew my hand back

But, it didn't land. It caught wind and flew out the window. I'm not sure where it went. I'm not sure
where the wind came from. I'm not sure how this happened.
All I know is that while watching the paper airplane fly out the window, I thought of something. I
thought of something creative, innovative, good, and different. I had an idea. A word. Something
that sparked this energy within me.
This common word was something I should've thought of before. It was something that should've

Describe Yourself As A Writer
When I was young, I always knew that college is important to the major that you choose. When I

lastly the strengths I have.
First, I think about the writing process. When the teacher or professor give me an essay, I start right

for other classes. Once I read the prompt, I start my outline to know what to write in my essay. I just

or sometimes words only. It depends on the topic or essay I write. I find the outline is a helpful way
to get started.

My DevelopmentRhetorical Analysis: This being the first paper I wrote for you, it turned out to be
utter garbage. This was my worst essay because I was overconfident in my own writing ability and
didn't think I had much room to improve on. At the time I felt like it was a top notch essay, but I
have recently gone back and reread it only to notice it as choppy and stale to read. Then the paper
was riddled with comma splices, even after you did a lesson going over how to fix them. It wasn't
out of spite that I kept repeating these mistakes, but instead it was just ignorance on the matter. It
was my goal coming out of that essay to fix those errors and while not perfect, I feel I have
improved in my awareness of the problem. This paper taught me a great deal on how to think more
critically about situations. This new mindset directly came into play in the second essay. I learned
my greatest lesson from this paper. I have so much room for improvement. Now that I can see more
of my errors I can continue to improve and move forwards with my writing abilities.
Literary Analysis: The Literary Analysis was by far my best essay and the one I most enjoyed
writing. The new critical thinking skills I learned in the first essay made writing this paper much
easier. I also found the topics of the

kindergarten. My teacher taught me how to write my name over and over until I could write it with
no errors. All through elementary my teachers taught me...show more content...
I need to learn to quit thinking as much on what I want to write about and how to write about a topic
and just starting jotting stuff down in outline form as it comes to mind. Run–ons and fragments I
need to be able to spot and fix right away or I really need to not have any in my papers at all. My
goals are to write papers and not have to reassure myself that maybe I need to do more research or
have more data or even have to rethink my whole topic over. I would love to have the knowledge
to be a tutor someday and teach other people how to properly write papers, paragraphs, essays,
and maybe even books. To have excellent skills in writing will definitely be a great advantage in
my nursing profession. In nursing, I will have to do lots of charting on my patients. I will have to
do health presentations on various subjects such as exercising, how our society eats, and sex
education if I want to be a course instructor. Researching information on all of those topics I will
have to make sure I do an excellent job on and collect accurate information and statistics so that I
can compare to other sources. Dictating to the doctor means that I will need to write properly so
that he understands what I am saying. Other nurses will have to be able to understand what I am
talking about by my writing skills when doing shift changes. I will have to be very precise so that
other nurses will not

Writing is way that we can express ourselves, it is a way to interface ideas and thoughts and to
prove a point. Throughout my writing experience or process I have struggled with writing
especially using details or really expressing myself my work. In this course Facts & Fiction: Portraits
in World Art I expect to gain more knowledge on how to write a perfectessay, story, letter, and
assignment. I expect to learn new genres and rhetorical situations. I also think my writing will
improve academically and I will develop my skills in writing. Also taking my writing to a different
point of view, level, and writing something different rather than the usual. I look forward to getting
feedback from my peers and learning their thoughts on my writing and how they can help me
improve.
Reading and writing were two things my parents use to always push me to improve and work on
more often. They always told me they are the essentials of everything thing. Even though I
disliked both at a young age as I grew older I preferred writing because I can always change the
way I write and write from my point of view, really be creative with it and prove my point.
Growing up I always loved writing short stories especially scary stories. I always was creative
with them and even made them realistic. To write an essay I usually have a couple of steps
writing an outline, and the thesis a draft and finally a final draft. The most difficult part about this
is writing the thesis because the whole essay revolves the thesis because it summarizes the whole
essay. At the end of some essays, I had to use citations to do that there were many websites that
helped me cite sources such as easybib which was a really simple process. So, citing sources was
one of the easiest things about writing the essay.
Writing to a teacher is way more complex then writing to a fried or a family member. Writing to a
teacher is way more complex, I must make sure that everything is on point or it reaches the state of
protection. Which is having the right format, a great thesis and really conveying the point of the
essay. Writing to a friend or a family member is much easier I usually don't focus on grammatic
errors or writing a perfect thesis. Today some of us don't

Rhetorical Analysis Reflection
This semester has taught me a lot about the different types of writing. I have learned how to draft
and compose a rhetorical analysis based off of an author's ethos, pathos, and logos strategies. Not
only have I been able to critically analyze rhetorical papers, but I have been able to search for
more information to support my ideas or beliefs. Even though this can be time consuming it is
well worth it to have a lot of support and evidence to back my ideas or beliefs on a topic.
Throughout this semester I have more of a general knowledge on rhetorical goals, critical reading and
writing skills, my processes on how to write a paper, and learning a new way of creating an idea
through electronical environments. Each assignment was...show more content...
These cites that were used could be placed in my essay and the flow of the paper would not change
but keep it more organized with my thought process. From the rhetorical essay to the argument
essay, the development of my citing or using references has greatly increased. When I started
with the rhetorical essay it was difficult to understand how to cite the author's work appropriately
but when I moved to the argument essay it was almost natural when citing work. I believe this is
due to the practice that we have had in class. The strategies I find most useful when writing an
essay is having a topic that is of interest. When I wrote the argument essay, I already had a topic
that interested me from the exploratory assignment. Generating an outline was another beneficial
strategy that I had used because I could see the gaps in my writing or where my ideas did not
flow together. Once I had an outline the rough draft was easy to create. I do not mind peer review
but it becomes challenging when the person who is reading your review might not have the same
views as I do. This would mean they were over critical of the paper and made it seem like I
needed to change my entire essay to fit the standards of another classmate versus what the
assignment was about. I did receive good constructive feedback on all of the assignments, which did
end up helping me adjust portions of my writing. I do believe I am the same way to others writing

My Experience In English Writing
English is a core concept in the Untied States and other countries that has allowed inviduals to
advance their knowledge. Not only does English provide an advancement in knowlege, but has
created a way for individuals to share their thoughts and feelings through writing. Which is why
English is one of the four subjects that is required to be taught in almost every school district in
America including mine. I began taking English from a young age which allowed me to take
advanced placement English IV my senior year at Tupelo High School. Advanced Placement English
IV allowed me to further my education in writing, which in return allowed me to overcome
obstacles, low points and discover strengths I never knew I had. Like any other thing in life there
are always obstacles individuals face everyday, for me in my English IV class writing was
something that was very challenging. The first challenge writing presented to me was trying to
organize all of my thoughts, so that it made sense. The first essay I ever wrote in my English class
was a journal entry about a memorable experience, so with that being said I decided I would write
about the experience I had while hunting with my Dad. The hunting experience with my dad had
many different parts, and one of my biggest challenges I had was organizing my thoughts, so that it
flowed correctly. Since I was telling a story within my journal I realized that I was jumping around
more then I should have and this became a problem. I learned

How To Write Essay Papers

  • 1. Strengths And Weaknesses Of Academic Writing Writing is a very helpful skill for most of the people who want to achieve success in their life. Improving your writing skills is very helpful before entering the university. Students are facing a lot of issues in their university because they are being asked to write academic essays, or scientific papers, and they did not have the expected skills to write what is being asked from them. On the other hand, those who have studied APA, and MLA in their high school, or by self –learning, are more likely to get high scores in their universities academic essays than those who did not. Those who have studied academic writing are having a big chance to achieve their goals in their university life because most of the courses in the university requires...show more content... My point of weakness is that I always go off topic, and I think most of the students do that in the beginning of their academic papers practices. It is not easy to stay on topic. However, I have learned some techniques that made me able to stay on topic, and I would like to mention them to students to avoid making my mistakes. First, students could make an outline before writing their final draft, and submit it. This has helped me so much in organizing my paper, and making it easy for me follow up with the points that I want to talk about without going off topic. Second, students should have a strong thesis statement, and restating it in each paragraph. By restating your thesis statement, you are not only making the reader following up with your points, but you are also making your thesis statement stronger because it has been mentioned in many paragraphs with different examples. Lastly, students should use transition words in their essay. Transition words helps the reader to progress from one idea to the next. Therefore, students should learn how to write academic essays, and take it more seriously because it could improve their Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. What I Learned For Myself As A Writer I learned that when you write a paper you should know who your audience is and their level of knowledge, beginner writer tends to generalize their audience and that result from being misunderstood or misinterpret by their audience so know your audience is essential to be a good writer, Also I learned that everything in your paragraph must have a connection to each other, first it is important to have a clear topic sentence follow by 3 good example that prove the point of the topic sentence and finish by conclusion, a conclusion should is like a summarization of all the things you have said in your writing. • 3. My Strengths And Weaknesses As A Writer English classes are fundamental to a child's educational growth. My past English classes have developed me into the student and writer I am today. My most recent English class, however, has made the most substantial impact in my academic career. In my eleventh grade English III class I learned not only the rules of proper citation, but also my strengths and weaknesses as a writer. Previous to my junior year in high school, my English classes spent minimal time writing papers where citing information from a text was required. As a result, I had much to learn going into my English III class. I went from writing simple narratives to complex research papers. This elevation in writing resulted in me having to learn the rules of citation. Mrs. Bingham, my eleventh grade English teacher, assigned a research paper that required in–text citations. In order to give the publishers of certain books and articles credit for the work they had done, I had to create a works cited page. This works cited page reflected the work of other authors that I put into my research paper. I learned that when creating a works cited page,...show more content... Through grading my papers, Mrs. Bingham was able to identify the areas in which I needed to improve my writing. At the forefront of these improvements was my incorrect use of pronoun antecedent agreement. In my papers, the antecedent would not match the pronoun it was referring to, thus leaving my sentences without clear meaning. Along with incorrect pronoun antecedent agreement, I discovered that I repeated ideas and opinions in my papers. This restating of the same information, not only resulted in a low grade, but also pointed to my inability to find more information to discuss. Although my English III class brought to my attention the weaker points of my writing, I was ultimately able to grow from this constructive criticism into a better Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. My Writing Style Kim, Thank you for allowing me to read your paper. This is a great start to a well written final product. What do you like about the writing? I enjoyed reading your paper. You have a writing style that invites the reader to fully engage your argument. You presented a clear, logical presentation of course material combined with personal insights and experiences that were well suited for your paper. It was a thorough and thoughtful presentation of the material. Well done. How is the writing objective (not overly subjective) communicating ideas with clarity? You provided a nice balance of objectivity and subjectivity as your cited ample evidence for your argumentation and interweaved personal reflections and anecdotes into the paper. Your did an excellent job in using the breadth and depth of texts that were used in our classes, which made for a well rounded paper. Apart from a few areas of your paper which may need to be reworded and fine tuned, I would suggest defining a few of the terms that are used in your paper, to make their meaning more clear to your reader (Weltanschauung, meaning perspective, distorted assumptions etc.). These are noted in my comments on your paper....show more content... Your writing provided an orderly and structured approach to the presentation of your argument. I appreciated your use of citations to support your ideas, which helped the reader understand the connection between leadership and inquiry. There were a number of instances in which you provide overt transitions from one paragraph to another which promoted a pattern of thought that was easily digestible. I would offer the suggestion to use section headings in the paper that correspond to your key points. Occasionally, I was left wondering which section you were focusing on, even though it was well Get more content on HelpWriting.net

At the beginning of the semester I was a poor writer who could not grasp the important aspects of writing. I had many grammatical errors along with many underdeveloped thoughts. Even though this class was only for a short period of time in order to learn how to write a proper academic paper, I can see how far I have come. My papers may still be sub–par but in many aspects have come a long way. I no longer have as many grammatical errors and can further express my thoughts in a paper. Also by taking this class I have further developed revision skills bylearning new tricks such as reading out loud and writing thoughts out as a brainstorming Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Reflection In English 101 Whitney Bailey Professor Johnson English 101 October 19, 2016 Reflection Paper It's hard to believe that it's already time for Midterms in my English 101 class. The adventure has been a lot easier than I at first anticipated. In any case, I am happy that I am taking the class and learning from it. In the beginning it appeared somewhat hard however I was resolved to compel my way through this class regardless of what difficulties I needed to persevere. On the first day of my English 101 class I was apprehensive, I had no clue what's in store from the class. As I discovered what the class would have been similar to, I let myself know I was going to attempt to get an B or higher toward the end of the semester and put all the exertion I had into each paper I kept in touch with, I was not going to set this class aside for later and linger like I use to do. These aptitudes may empower me to enjoy additionally composing and not need to stress over having a written assignment. This course has helped me with many chances to figure out how to properly write papers. Prior to this class, I had little experience with how to build a legitimate paper. It has taken experience, and getting normal evaluations, to show me how to precisely write. Despite the fact that this course required different papers to be turned in, I am appreciative to have possessed the capacity to gain from my oversights and develop as a writer. I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and the "Common Sense" textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards. I received a B on my final draft; the first passing grade I have ever received on a research paper. I am very satisfied with my grade. When it came to the essays writing became a little trickier because I had to understand what it was I needed to write about and the style in which I need to write it in. There are nine essay writing methods which I learned while attending this course: exemplification, compare/contrast, cause and effect, proposal, narration, process, division/classification, definition, and argument. The only problems I encountered when trying to write the essays that were assigned to me by the instructor was finding suitable subject matter to write about. Once I found my topics for my essay, everything else became easier. I would first produce a rough draft and then the students, the instructor, and myself would go over them in class and decided if what I was writing was in its best form. Most of my rough drafts needed improvement, but if it didn't it wouldn't be a rough draft, so it was understood. My final drafts were very satisfying for me as well as the grades I received on them. Grit can be defined as strength of character or the ability to overcome failure and continue to work toward success. People with grit are not always the people with the most natural ability, but their work ethic and ability to overcome obstacles allows them to achieve success. Grit is a very valuable characteristic in almost any venture, as it gives someone an advantage in overcoming the inevitable obstacles they will face. However, grit is much easier adopted when an individual has a growth mindset. The first step to obtaining grit is to correlate both self–control and self–confidence when trying to reach an objective. By my senior year, I was the fourth fastest runner on varsity. That year our varsity team won the district meet, which qualified us to run in the 2016 state meet in Oregon. The transformation over the years were evident. My determination to accomplish my goal of becoming a faster runner was complete. If I had simply just given up that first day of practice, I wouldn't have ran along side of the fastest runners in Oregon or have met the multitude of people that are now my closest friends. Having a goal sets one up for a challenge, whether it being physically or mentally, goals keep us active and thinking in more ways than one. Still, if someone has self–control, confidence, and a goal, they are still not complete. Growth mindset is the cone to an ice cream. It is the foundation of what I think a successful person is. Without it one couldn't use the characteristics mentioned above in more ways than one. Someone with a growth mindset believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work, brains and talent are just the starting point. College, High School, Middle School, etc. We all have written something at some point in our lives. Personally I haven't been exposed to massive amounts of writing outside of school although, I do enjoy writing songs. There's many different types from Novels, Poetry, Music, all the way to texting. Those essays have also forced me to reanalyze my personal opinions and beliefs. After taking this course, I believe that my identity as a writer has changed for the better. Whenever I began a new essay, I would create a list of ideas and a simple outline. These things allowed me to process my ideas and arrange them in a way that made sense. Following these strategies helped me plan my essays, but they did not allow me to branch my creativity or self–expression. This is because I had a strict way of organizing my essay which denied me the ability to think creatively and write in intriguing formats. For example, in my essay "The First Child", I was required to tell a true story in a creative way. Before starting my paper, I wrote a list and outline which then lead me to write a formal essay with no creativity or interesting hook. Therefore, when revising my essay I interviewed the person who gave me their story and used index cards to organize my essay. I also changed the format and looked for places where I could add more details and imagery. After editing, my essay became more intriguing and had much more imagery that kept the reader interested. This is one of my papers where I received good results and positive feedback after submitting it. Furthermore, I learned through my work in this class that I struggle with conventions and mechanics. After, submitting many of my essays, I noticed that in my feedback I had received many notes about conventions, grammar, and punctuation. This revealed to me that I had to work on proofreading my essay deeper and make Get more content on HelpWriting.net

It was very important that I gained the necessary knowledge and confidence to become a better writer. I didn't know how to express myself and felt as though my writing was not my interest. As a result of taking English 101, I have gained a better understanding on how to properly research and build a satisfactory paper. Every paper that was assigned seemed like a struggle to complete. Before entering this class, I did not know the meaning of a thesis or why it was important, however, I obtained this skill quickly. I noticed that every paper has an argument and the thesis helps clarify the rebuttal. Now, I have a new outlook on writing. It's a way to express my thoughts and allow others to see things through my eyes. There is no doubt that I still have a long way to go, but I know if I continue to write, I will get better. Just as I developed more skills in class, the various papers assigned helped to better structure the writer in me. In addition, the subject areas were not only interesting, but very informative and made it much easier to write about my experiences. This portfolio demonstrates the strongest and the weakest of my writing as a first year college student and as a rising professional of psychology major. At the time I felt like it was a top notch essay, but I have recently gone back and reread it only to notice it as choppy and stale to read. Then the paper was riddled with comma splices, even after you did a lesson going over how to fix them. It wasn't out of spite that I kept repeating these mistakes, but instead it was just ignorance on the matter. It was my goal coming out of that essay to fix those errors and while not perfect, I feel I have improved in my awareness of the problem. This paper taught me a great deal on how to think more critically about situations. This new mindset directly came into play in the second essay. I learned my greatest lesson from this paper. I have so much room for improvement. Now that I can see more of my errors I can continue to improve and move forwards with my writing abilities. Also taking my writing to a different point of view, level, and writing something different rather than the usual. I look forward to getting feedback from my peers and learning their thoughts on my writing and how they can help me improve. Reading and writing were two things my parents use to always push me to improve and work on more often. They always told me they are the essentials of everything thing. Even though I disliked both at a young age as I grew older I preferred writing because I can always change the way I write and write from my point of view, really be creative with it and prove my point. Growing up I always loved writing short stories especially scary stories. I always was creative with them and even made them realistic. To write an essay I usually have a couple of steps writing an outline, and the thesis a draft and finally a final draft. The most difficult part about this is writing the thesis because the whole essay revolves the thesis because it summarizes the whole essay. I believe this is due to the practice that we have had in class. The strategies I find most useful when writing an essay is having a topic that is of interest. When I wrote the argument essay, I already had a topic that interested me from the exploratory assignment. Generating an outline was another beneficial strategy that I had used because I could see the gaps in my writing or where my ideas did not flow together. This would mean they were over critical of the paper and made it seem like I needed to change my entire essay to fit the standards of another classmate versus what the assignment was about.
