The mere mention of the words draws people from far and wide and from all mixes of society. The
main problem seems to come up when people really don't know what social justice issues face their
society and the rest of the world. The question comes up of how much real knowledge of this
subject do people invest in. It is quite surprising how many half truths that run rampant in any

The police tortured them both and got names and anything they can use against them. The whole
time trying to get them to admit to the bombing that had taken place in Guilford, England. While
these interrogations were going on the police went out and arrested even more people which was
the McGuire family, Gerry's father, Guiseppe Conlin, and a couple others. Carole Richardson and
Patrick Armstrong were arrested for the bombing as well because they were friends of Gerrys'.
Annie McGuire (his aunt), her sons, Patrick age 14 and Vincent age 16, and her husband Patty and
finally Guiseppe Conlin were charged as being a IRA support network for Gerry and the other
bombers. The only proof that was shown against the McGuire family and Guiseppe was that they
were there and that Annie and the kids had some chemical on their hands that could be used to make
a bomb. It was all circumstantial evidence. They could not really prove they had done anything
wrong. Paul and Gerry finally signed the confessions after many hours of getting beaten. Paul was
forced by gun point and they threatened to kill Gerry's father and only then did he said he would

In Henry Louis Gates, Jr.'s story, "What's in a Name," there is a telling story about a young boy
learning the powerful pain and humiliation in the racist practices of American society. Gates
illustrates how racism can perpetuate prejudice that aims to take away individual identity and put
entire groups of people down. Yet, the fact that Skip was willing to never look Mr. Wilson in the

willing to fight it in his own unique way. The plot of the story is both simple and complex. The
racism Gates experiences is telling and powerful because it is so blatant and yet nonchalant.
Gates' character is simply walking down the street with his father. Upon saying hello to one of
the white Irish men in the town, Gates is perplexed with the response. The man, Mr. Wilson,
responded to Skip's father with "Hello, George," (Gates 131). Gates shows how Skip was
confused, because obviously he knew his father's name was not George. However, his father
responds with "He calls all colored people George" (Gates 132). This was a shocking revelation to
the young character of Skip. He before had believed that Mr. Wilson was not that bad of a guy. Yet,
after this small, but symbolically significant incident, Skip "never again looked Mr. Wilson in the
