The document discusses the purpose of album covers and some controversial covers. It notes that album covers are meant to attract listeners to the music and represent the artist/band. Some controversial covers featured nudity, like John Lennon and Yoko Ono's album, or religious/offensive imagery, like some Nirvana and Jimi Hendrix covers. The document advises being aware of potential controversies like nudity, sexuality, violence or drugs when designing an album cover. It also provides some key features commonly included on album covers.
3. Why do albums have covers?
There is one overriding
purpose for album artwork:
to attract listeners to your
music. Essentially, an
album’s artwork is the
equivalent of a book’s
cover. Even though we are
told to never judge books
by their covers, we still do!
Good album artwork is
visually appealing yet
incorporates the music
and musicians into it. In
order to attract listeners,
make sure your artwork
not only looks interesting,
but also represents your
band. It may be unwise to
advertise your music
incorrectly. Although the
song is good having an
unattractive album cover
would not satisfy the sales
needed.
4. Controversial Covers
The front cover displayed
Lennon and Ono frontally
nude, while the rear
cover featured them
from behind. Distributors
were prompted to sell
the album in a plain
brown wrapper, and
copies of the album were
impounded as obscenity
in several jurisdictions.
The cover shows a
picture of a naked
Marilyn Manson. In
which retailer stores
such as Wal-Mart and K
Mart refuse to carry the
album.
The album cover clearly
showed a naked infant
with his penis showing
and is swimming after a
dollar bill. Nirvana
compromised and put a
sticker that read "If
you're offended by this,
you must be a closet
paedophile." over the
genitals. Nirvana saw
continued controversy
for their next album,
Hindu groups in Malaysia
expressed anger at both
the David King illustrated
poster and cover which
shows Hendrix and his
bandmates as the deity
Vishnu. The Malaysian
government's Home
Ministry instituted a ban
on the artwork in June
2014 to protect religious
sensitivities.
The cover sleeve
showing Chris McClure,
a friend of the band,
smoking a cigarette,
was criticised by the
head of
the NHS in Scotland for
"reinforcing the idea
that smoking is OK". The
image on the CD itself is
a shot of an ashtray full
of cigarettes. The band's
product manager
denied the accusation,
and in fact suggested
the opposite — "You
can see from the image
smoking is not doing
him the world of good"
The album artwork is
a sculpture of Lady
Gaga by Jeff Koons
with her legs open
and a gazing ball
placed between them.
Although no nudity is
visible on the artwork,
the album cover was
still censored in the
Middle East and
China. Rather than
traditional censorship,
the gazing ball
between her legs was
enlarged to fully cover
her breasts, and her
legs were coloured
black so they don't
appear naked
The cover
features the
bottom half of a
female's body,
with her skirt as
part of the
ceiling. It was
criticized of being
sexually offensive
as the female's
underwear and
legs are very
clearly visible.
Clearly, when I construct my album artwork
I must be aware of these controversies and
try to avoid it.
This will include nudity, sexually explicit
content, violence and religious content.
This may be an issue due to the theme of
my song, however I must try to avoid the
drug use aspect of it.
