Lots of debate about what Output and Impact are and how they should be measured– we are not going to get into that – but look at how we might capture and deliver the info required. Conceptual picture shows proposed input to Research System/Institutional Repository. E.g. all outputs could be available via Institutional Repository. Where the data source should be other systems e.g. licences in Research System this could be imported into Institutional Repository. Or a report could be created pulling data from the different systems. We may want to add the other questions to one of the central systems (ideally the list could be admin maintained so no need to pipeline technical work if there is a change in questions). RCUK Outputs and Outcomes collection will replace final reports planned for c2011. SWORD was mentioned by RCUK as a potential method of depositing full text in both RCUK and RO systems simultaneously but it was noted there were issues with this. There was also some discussion re Thomson-Reuters data and costs associated with getting data for use in exchange files and possibility of a bulk deal for RO’s to help manage this.* REF research group information could be pulled from this as we already have the lower level detail and we have Research Groups on our HR System. Government change may affect! GU repository originated with the DEADALUS project in 2001 and moved to a full service in 2006. Based on Southampton University ePrints open source software – can run on Linux (and Windows) uses Perl, MySQL, and Apache. Project ends March 2010
Open URL resolver ‘Find More’ (from Innovative Interfaces Ltd) offers alternative places to look (e.g. other biblio sources) from Institutional Repository itself Encore Harvester will import (harvest) records from Institutional Repository and the Theses service and interfile hits from these with the library catalogue hits. Saves user searching in two places. Very clear and improved deposit procedures (metadata and full text) Mediated, proxy and self-deposit options. Many staff trained. R&E staff assisting making for better joined up services and understanding. Addressed advance publications for clinical/life sciences by creating online ISSN and published online fields to allow these publications to be added even though they don’t have volume, issue or pagination details.
Resource - Business Continuity requirements e.g. RAE and resource being diverted to support other systems had to be accommodated – sometimes at very short notice.
