Lesson 9: Complements--Objects of Verbs
The idea: Action Verbs often need complements (called direct objects and indirect
objects) to complete their meaning.
Direct Objects Indirect Objects
Word or group of words that
names the receiver of the
action.
*(Answers the question what or whom)
Word or group of wordsthat tells to whom or
what (or for whom and what) an
action is performed.
*(The IO comes between the verb and the DO)
Jack climbed the beanstalk.
The giant's wife protected Jack.
Jesse told his little cousins thestory.

To find the direct
or indirect objects...
Find the action verb in the
sentence.
To find the direct object,
ask what or whom.
To find the indirect object, ask
to whom or what (or for whom
or what).The detective finally solved the mystery.
The campers cooked their food over a fire.
The loud music gave me a headache.
The rabbit in Alice in Wonderland carries a watch.
We offered Jim a ride to the game.
Find the subject in the sentence.
