1. In today’s business environment, customers are challenged to address a wide variety of frequently conflicting questions and concerns in their organizations. Managing these effectively and coming up with workable, creative solutions will ultimately help to make your business more successful. For each of the concerns outlined on this slide, virtualization can help. This presentation will go into more detail on how virtualization can make a difference for you – and in some cases, an immediate difference.
  2. What is Top of Mind for Companies (our Customers)?I need a comprehensive virtualization strategy for today and in the future.Virtualization is a hot topic, it is very popular, you want to understand what it can do for you. Can it deliver on the promises of Lower Costs both Capital and Operational? You may already have begun your journey and want to know how you can take it to the next level. It would be great to have one tool to manage my physical and virtual assets form the desktop to the datacenterDoes Virtualization just add another tool? You want to make life easier. To do this one tool for management across all of your platforms would help drive down management costs and gain efficiencies.I need to maximize my existing IT investmentsI already have an IT infrastructure. How can I position myself to leverage what I have today, and be ready for the future?

Microsoft’s integrated management solutions give you the visibility into your environment, while increasing your capability to respond to ever changing business requirements. Whether on the desktop to provide the optimal experience for accessing the services you provide, to the datacenter to provide the services to your organization, or into the cloud which provides an elastic scalable infrastructure.
  4. So we have talked about some of the questions you need to consider when evaluating your desktop virtualization strategy. Let’s also talk about what your company’s key business goals are. What is top of mind for your organization?Goal: Reduce TCOSave money: you are looking for ways to lower your desktop administration costsSave Costs: you are looking for ways to have greater contingency in your organization e.g ways to recover from PC failures and PC theftGoal: Increase Business agility and ContinuityYou may be looking for ways to get faster application adoption, deployment and updates with no user interruptionsGoal: Enable anywhere access for usersIf you have mobile workers in your organization, you are likely looking for ways to enable users to access their data from any authorized PC at any timeGoal: Ensure security and complianceDepending on the profile of your organization, you may have specific security and compliance requirements that need to be taken into account as part of your virtualization strategy e.g. HIPPA requirements in the healthcare sectorWindows 7 migrationWindows 7 may be part of your IT plan. You may be looking for ways to expedite this migration and to minimize the effort of same within your organizationAnd management, as you work with local and virtual environments, how are you going to manage everything? What do we mean by management?•       the ability to deliver to users targeted virtual applications, along with physical applications, in addition to software updates and other configuration management services; Integrated incident awareness, response, problem tracking, help desk support, remediation, recovery, and reporting across physical and virtual PCs/Apps•       Centralized, policy-based management – including deployment, patching, and updating through application termination
  5. With Desktop Virtualization, we have broken the bonds between the OS, Application, and Data and User Settings. With Virtualization solutions in each of these areas, we provide our customers the ability to provide the best solution for the customer depending on the individual need. For Data and User Settings: Folder redirection and roaming profiles having the user’s personal profile and data available dynamically on any authorized PC. Providing companies with the ability to back up personal profiles and data to the data center. Solutions: Application Virtualization: Providing end users with the ability to have their business applications available on any authorized PC. Decoupling applications from the operating system (OS) and helping to eliminate application-to-application incompatibility, because applications are no longer installed on the local client machine. In addition, application streaming expedites the application delivery process so that IT no longer needs to install applications locally on every machine.Remote App : programs that are accessed remotely through Terminal Services and appear as if they are running on the end user's local computer. Users can run RemoteApp programs side by side with their local programs. A user can minimize, maximize, and resize the program window, and can easily start multiple programs at the same time. If a user is running more than one RemoteApp program on the same terminal server, the RemoteApp programs will share the same Terminal Services session.VDI: technology enabling users to access their personalized Windows desktops that are hosted on servers. (performance subject to network connection)Session Virtualization: Microsoft has been active in Session Virtualization for over a decade. Session virtualization makes it possible for companies to run an application or an entire desktop in one location, but have it be controlled in another. It allows companies to install and manage session-based desktops and applications, or virtual-machine based desktops on centralized servers in the data center; screen images are delivered to the users, and the users' client machines, in turn, send keystrokes and mouse movements back to the server. When using Session Virtualization, administrators can present users with an entire desktop environment, or with their individual applications and data which they require to complete their task. From a user perspective, these applications are integrated seamlessly—looking, feeling, and behaving like local applications.Enterprise Desktop Virtualization providing companies with the ability to deploy and manage virtual Windows desktops to help enterprises upgrade to the latest version of Windows, without having to worry about application compatibility. Provides companies the ability to run two operating systems on one device, adding virtual image delivery, policy-based provisioning, and centralized management.
  6. Software applications are essential for your business to be competitive. Delivering these applications in a timely, non-intrusive manner is critical to enabling your users to be productive on a daily basis. The application layer is the most challenging and expensive to maintain because it has so many moving parts. One key challenge within application management is to make sure all applications can co-exist. Another key challenge is delivering applications to end users when they need them without impacting their productivity. The challenge for IT becomes optimizing for speed and quality of application service delivery while maximizing the user experience and reducing costs. What are the questions you need to consider, when reviewing your application management strategy? What applications have you deployed? How are you managing them? How long is your new application deployment cycle?Do you have app-app conflict issues?Do you know where applications are installed/executing?How are applications provisioned and maintained?Do you know about all the applications you run/own? Where are applications installed and where do applications execute? Locally? In the cloud? A mix of both? Are they device-centric or user-centric?Is your organization working in a heterogeneous environment that supports Windows XP, Windows Vista®, and Windows 7? Is it important for you to ensure familiar access across those environments on a variety of form factors, including desktops, laptops, and Smartphones? Is it important for you to ensure familiar access across those environments on a variety of form factors, including desktops, laptops, and Smartphones?
  7. Desktop virtualization can help you with your application management strategy by addressing application compatibility, and providing new ways to deliver applications to end users. If companies choose to implement just one part of desktop virtualization, virtualizing applications should be considered because it will bring immediate cost savings, dramatically increase business agility, and improve business continuity. If you are not familiar with Application Virtualization, many of your peers are using it, and Microsoft has a robust case study portfolio highlighting customer experiences (see next slide on App V evidence).  App-V helps eliminate conflicts between applications and removes the need to install those applications on PCs while providing built-in management capabilities which are the key to successful enterprise scale deployments in global businesses. What are the benefits of Application Virtualization?Saves money by simplifying application management lifecycle and significantly reducing regression and application interoperability testing• Increases business agility through faster application adoption, deployment, and updates with no user interruptions for installation or reboot• Enables anywhere access so applications are dynamically available on any authorized PC without application installs – online, offline, or over the Internet• Accelerates Windows and application deployments by reducing the image footprint•Improves business continuity, letting users quickly recover and get provisioned applications to a new PC – without application installs And all of this with Windows 7 integration/a familiar UI to work withAs you think about virtualizing applications, consider that MS’ Application Virtualization together with System Center Configuration Manager and Operations Manager can provide your organization with full enterprise PC Lifecycle Management of both physical and virtual assets and applications
  8. The data layer is your organization’s most valuable asset. You use the data you collect as input to make essential business decisions, and the business insight gained is often proprietary and sensitive. Because of this, organizations must find appropriate ways to protect data and to ensure compliance with data protection standards. Data security, storage, access, and discoverability are major considerations when it comes to this layer. What are the questions to ask when determining your data strategy?Where does the data live in your organization – the local PC, the server, or a mix of both? What is your data backup strategy? What happens if users in your organization lose their PCs?From where should users be able to access data?
  9. A component of your data strategy may include virtualizing the user state layer. User State Virtualization increases business continuity and reduces costs by helping you manage your data layer. This is enabled by two technologies available on the Windows platform – Roaming Profiles and Folder Redirection, together called User State Virtualization. Having user state virtualization in place in your organization can help users quickly recover from PC failures and PC theft.
  10. Virtualizing data and apps is the solution that will provide companies with maximum flexibility For example: Whether a user is Mobile (running in connected and disconnected states), or always connected to a LAN, virtualizing the Application the user needs as well as the Data and User Settings can help an organizationReduce TCO•Save money: reduce application-to-application compatibility test costs•Save Cost: quickly recover from PC failures and PC theftIncrease Business agility•Faster application adoption, deployment and updates with no user interruptions•Quickly recover and get provisioned applications to a new PC – without application installs•Get users’ data on a new PC simply by logging inEnable anywhere access for users•Applications dynamically available on any authorized PC without application installs  - online, offline or over the internet•Enable users to access their data from any authorized PC at any timeExpedite Windows 7 migration•Migrate to Windows 7 now – run older productivity applications inside a Windows XP virtual machine
  11. After virtualizing your user data and applications, consider the OSWhen determining if/how to virtualize the OS, think about what the most common types of worker scenarios are that you need to address? For example, if you virtualize the OS in the datacenter, you will gain the security and efficiencies from that. Server OS virtualization makes sense for certain scenarios where users are connected and the infrastructure is in place to support it. It is also well suited for managing unmanaged desktops bydelivering flexible, secure access for offsite workers/contractors without the need to purchase hardware. It is also well suited for companies in financial services and healthcare that need extremely high levels of security, compliance, and business continuity for desktops. Also, when looking at your OS strategy, you may be considering OS migration. OS Virtualization can help you solve for App-OS migration conflicts e.g. resolving for the small number of applications in your organization that will only run on XP and are stopping you from migrating to Windows 7
  12. Keep critical data highly secure in the data center by removing applications and data from end point devices and locking it down in the datacenterFor companies in highly regulated industries, centralized application tracking helps simplify the burden of regulatory complianceSimplify remote connectivity by enabling access to a rich desktop from a web page or seamlessly integrated with a local desktopEnable flexible work scenarios such as hot-desking and work from homeDesktop environments centralized in the datacenter provide better business continuity and faster return to productivity for disaster recovery scenariosAccelerate and extend deployment of desktops and applications to a wide array of client devices, including clients on which the desktop operating system can’t run nativelyEnable rapid OS upgrades and patching by installing desktops only once in the data center and not locally on end point devicesMED-V separatesthe operating system from the physical hardware and allows a single PC to run virtual machines side by sidewith the host OS. MED-V Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization (MEDV) will enhance deployment and management of Virtual PC images on aWindows® Desktop, while also providing a seamless and simple experience for the end-users, independent of the local desktop configuration and operating system.
  13. VDI for running full Windows 7 desktops in the datacenter as appropriate for connected users• Remote Desktop Services, formerly Terminal Services, provides session-based desktops in the datacenter with higher scale and lower cost, but less personalization and customization than VDI•MED-V to run Windows XP applications that are incompatible with Windows 7 on local Windows desktopsFor small organizations, where you set up each desktop manually, use Windows 7 Pro “Windows XP Mode”
  14. Terminal Services, now Remote Desktop Services has been used successfully by customers for many years. It is a mature technology with a significant amount of knowledge in how to build, support and scale this solution.Like every solution, it was never a silver bullet to wholesale desktop replacement and should be considered for certain scenarios. Common issues with it were: Lack of user isolation meant that some knowledge workers in particular could place significant load on the server, slowing it down for everyoneApplication compatibility issues – some application written specifically for Windows clients couldn’t run on it and additionally some applications ran poorly or conflicted in a multi-user session environmentVDI by comparison is a relatively new technology that addresses some of these issues though has some of its own, namely scalability and TCO.So to compare and contrast:Session Virtualization scales more users per server than VDI. This means you require less servers and less management for a Remote Desktop Session Host Server than a comparable VDI infrastructureApp-V works in both solutions and actually solves many of the issues for application compatibility that were problematic in Session VirtualizationThe same RDP connection protocol is used for both VDI and RDSRDS was built to support both VDI and RDS connections so the service infrastructure is shared and can support both types of users at onceUpsides for VDI:VDI offers better user operating system isolation – this means performance can be better constrained with users doing work that could impact othersVDI has better native application compatibility – applications that only run on Windows client, have application conflict or performance issues can run betterVDI allows users to be admins of their own images – which generally isn’t done in a Remote Desktop Services Session Host environmentUpsides for Session Virtualization:Session Virtualization requires less hardware than VDI – sessions scale much higher per server than VDI desktops by a factor of 3:1. This means you require less servers and less management for a Remote Desktop Session Host Server infrastructure than a comparable VDI infrastructureSessions are cheaper than VDI desktops – because less servers are required, this means less support and management and this drives the TCO cost downServer management is less than VDICan also use App-V – as mentioned above, App-V works in both Session Virtualization and VDI environments.<Closing statement>Because Remote Desktop Services supports both VDI and Session Virtualization you can use both at the same time to achieve the scale and user scenarios that you business demands for an optimal cost/value tradeoff. Lets talk more about how this can be done and how Remote Desktop Services has improved in Windows Server 2008 R2 to support this.
  15. *** This slide should be used to level set the audience on the different between the two types of virtualization approaches. Many customers will blend these and we want to call out the distinctions as we have solutions for both ***Another distinction I’d like to make is between Desktop and App vt. Well, in this case, not only that the technology is different, but also the use-cases are different<click>App-v takes an app and builds a package out of it, isolating the application from other apps in the systemIt’s a great way to resolve conflicts between applications (for instance, diff versions of the same app). You can also run virtualized apps without actually installing them – so it makes apps very portable and provides a whole new way to deliver apps to endpoints<click>DV – which in MS is MED-V + VPC, actually creates a package of a full desktop OS as I mentioned. Its useful when you wish to run applications that are incompatible with the desktop OS, since you can run two OS concurrently on one device Or leverage the same quality, to run two environments on a single PC (e.g. corporate and personalDesktop Virtualization can be server-hosted (“VDI”) or client-hosted. VDI enables a desktop with all applications and user data to be executed centrally and securely in the data center, with users accessing the desktop via a remote desktop protocol (RDP). Client-hosted desktop virtualization creates a separate OS environment on the desktop, allowing a non-compatible legacy or LOB application to operate within a more current desktop operating system. To summarize – 2 diff tech, different use-cases.

  17. It all starts from a Virtual PC image that encapsulates a desktop environment: an operating system (OS), applications, and any management or security tools commonly used desktops. One of the common questions is how do I manage this virtual machine once it’s deployed, how can I deliver applications to it, patch it, apply corporate policies to it, run anti-virus in it, and more. The recommended solution is to join each deployed virtual machine to the organizational Active Directory domain, and manage it as any other desktop.MED-V facilitates this process and makes it easy to configure and transparent for the end user. Then the virtual PC image is loaded into a centralized repository (which is an IIS-based web-server) that holds all the images ready to be deployed. The next component is the management server that enables administrators to take the images from the repository, associate them with a policy, and provision them to Active Directory users or groups. The server components, are controlled from a single management console. Finally, on the end-client, a client component needs to be installed using any standard software distribution that the organization has.The client has two roles:It authorizes against the server, obtains the usage policy, retrieves the image from the repository, and apply the policy to the local Virtual PC settingsThe second role is to manage control the Virtual PC session end-to-end providing a seamless user experienceAn alternative to having the image retrieved by the client, is actually to export the image as a compressed file from the image repository, and use an existing software distribution solution (such as SC Configuration Manager) to deliver that to a predefined location on the client. MED-V client will look at this location for this pre-staged pacakaged, before attempting to retrieve the image from a centralized repository. This way you may reuse existing software distribution servers, rather than having a new farm of servers just to deliver MED-V images,
  18. The rich client advantage – user data can be cached for offline access and then automatically synchronizes with datacenter servers upon re-connection to the network. User Data:DocumentsPicturesMusicVideos User Settings:Appearance and personalizationNetwork and InternetHardware and soundAccessibility
  19. Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) is a centralized desktop delivery solution that enables organizations to store and execute desktop workloads (OS, apps, data) on virtual machines in the datacenter, and presents the UI via a remote desktop protocol (such as RDP) to user devices. With VDI, client operating systems are decoupled from the client devices (such as desktops, laptops and thin clients), and are run as virtual machines on servers. Users are able to interact with these virtual desktops through a remoting protocol such as Microsoft’s RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol). All execution of desktop workloads happens on the server, while the UI is presented via RDP to the user devices, thereby enabling users to have a rich desktop experience.
  20. [Build 1] – The following slide provides a high level overview of the components in RDS. We will look at the new RDSH and RDVH technologies in depth later on.Remote Desktop Session Host Server provides a similar set of functionality as Terminal Server.RD Virtual Host Server is a hyper-v based server that is used to provide VDI functions.RemoteApp and Desktop Web Access Server provides a web based interface for RemoteApp enabled applications as well as one click access to virtual desktops. Highlight that you need Windows 7 on the client to take full advantage of Desktop Connections.RD Gateway to offer secure remote access to RDS servers and infrastructureAll components require an RDS licensing serverPermissions and policy is stored in Active Directory[Build 2]Remote Desktop Client gets connection information from the RD Web Access Server. If the client is outside the network the client connects through the RD Gateway server, if they are internal then can connect directly to an RDSH or RDVH server. In both cases the server that the client connects to is negotiated by the RD connection Broker. The connection broker plays a central role in RDS to make sure clients get connected to appropriate resources. It also helps clients reconnect to disconnected or interrupted session, and makes sure that clients are connecting to the correct servers for VDI resources. At a high level the remote client uses the RD Gateway to obtain access to the RDSH RD Session Host and RDVH servers. The RD Connection Broker connects clients to sessions and VMs on the RDSH and RDVH servers. All Remote Desktop Servers require validation with an RD Licensing Server.
  21. Some of the key components of the Microsoft VDI offering are:Windows Server 2008 with Hyper-V:Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V allows you to virtualize server roles as separate virtual machines (VMs) running on a single physical machine, without the need to buy third-party software. Support for the latest hardware-assisted virtualization technologies allows virtualization of very demanding workloads. Clustering of Windows Server virtualization (WSv) hosts or VMs running on WS hosts and backup of VMs while they are running keep your virtualized servers highly available. New management tools and performance counters make the virtualized environment easier to manage and monitor. Terminal Services (TS) RemoteApp and TS Web Access allow programs that are accessed remotely to be opened with just one click and appear as if they are running seamlessly on the end user's local computer. TS Gateway helps provide secure remote access to Windows-based programs through firewalls – without the need for a virtual private network (VPN).Systems Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008:SCVMM is part of the Systems Center Management suite, which provides integrated management across physical, virtual and session based infrastructure. Virtual Machine Manager 2008 (VMM) supports the management of hosts running Hyper-V, and VMM can actually enable Hyper-V remotely from the VMM 2008 console. It integrates with new clustering support in Windows Server 2008 to allow for fault-tolerant and cluster aware virtual machines to be created, as well as providing VMM-specific functions, such as Intelligent Placement, the Self-Service Portal, and the integrated Library. In addition to support for Hyper-V, SCVMM provides support for non-Microsoft infrastructure, including CITRIX and VMWare. This integrated management capability greatly reduces IT management overheads normally associated with managing virtual desktop environments.Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V):App-V is a part of Microsoft’s Desktop Optimization pack (MDOP), and enables applications to run without the need to visit a desktop, laptop, or terminal server. Applications are no longer installed on the client—and there is minimal impact on the host operating system or other applications. As a result, application conflicts and the need for regression testing are dramatically reduced. Virtual Application deployments, patches, updates, and terminations are more easily managed via policies.Desktop delivery through Citrix Xen Desktop:Citrix XenDesktop™ offers a next-generation, user-centric desktop virtualization solution that provides a complete system for desktop delivery.  XenDesktop dynamically assembles virtual desktops on-demand, providing users a new, yet personalized, desktop each time they log on – ensuring that performance never degrades. In addition, XenDesktop’s high-speed delivery protocol provides unparalleled responsiveness over any network which helps in desktop optimization. As part of Microsoft's VDI roadmap, We plan on introducing our own connection broker technology, as part of Remote Desktop Services (aka Terminal Services). This technology will be a part of Windows Server 2008 R2, and will complement some of the VDI technology currently being built into Windows 7. Additional functionality is expected to include:Support for upto 10 monitorsMultimedia enhancements for remote desktops, including enhanced bidirectional audio, rich D3D and video remoting capability, support for aeroglass, etcHence, in the WS08 R2 timeframe, we will have two options for implementing VDI:For large, complex enterprise deployments, the joint Microsoft and Citrix solution will continue to offer a superior set of features. For small scale departmental implementations, the Microsoft-only stack will provide the best balance of features and price.Organizations that are considering VDI today, are encouraged to deploy the current Microsoft-Citrix offering, as this will enable them to lay a foundation to grow their VDI infrastructure in the future.

  24. In collaboration with our partner base, including Citrix, Microsoft offers a comprehensive set of VDI solutions built on top of Hyper-V that are part of Microsoft’s desktop virtualization strategy and offer a viable alternative to VMware View, in addition to providing companies with more opportunity for ROI on their Microsoft and/or Citrix investments.Eco system: MS as a company has been in existence for 25 + years and has built out a robust partner eco system during that timeMicrosoft has a large partner ISV and SI ecosystem around centralized desktop management, and a robust set of solutions. We have integration with Citrix/Quest and other partners for VDI.
  25. Delivering on the Essential Capabilities: Supporting Ultimate Flexibility with Windows 7, Desktop Virtualization and System CenterEssential Points to Land: All 4 essential capabilities are acheived in this scenarioWorks both online and offline (VDI differentiator) Serves a fast-growing segment of end users: Mobile Workers, a segment that will be more than 30 percent of the workforce by the end of 2011 Storyline: Mobile workers make up an increasing proportion of end users in today’s organization. Between 25 and 30 percent of today’s workers can be classified as mobile, and these users need to be productive regardless of where they are.  The capability of anywhere access for mobile workers is provided by a set of technologies that help IT both manage and give access to Data (Folder Redirection/Offline Files), Applications (Application Virtualization), and User Settings (Roaming User Profiles). The capability of Security and Data Protection is provided by BitLocker on the PC and extended to portable drives by BitLocker To Go. It is protected in transit with DirectAccess, which leverages the security advances of IP v6 and IPSec to ensure data protection. Business Continuity is achieved through these same technologies because if users need quick access to new PCs, they can simply log in with their Active Directory credentials and their data, applications, and computing environment can be provisioned to them on demand. All of this is managed end-to-end from physical to virtual and desktop to datacenter with System Center. Data Points: Swedish Medical Center Case Study (App-V) (http://mscomapps/gcrpinternal/Case_Study_Detail.aspx?casestudyid=201290)
