By: Erika Murphy and Tyler Warren Invisible Children
Our Mission We are a movement seeking to end the long lasting war in Africa and bring children soldiers home. We seek to rebuild schools, educate future leaders, and provide jobs in Northern Uganda. We are the Motivated misfits and masses redefining what it means to be an activist.
Values We value informing the world about the situation going on in Northern Uganda. We value the kids that are being forced to serve in the war. Inspiring young people to go and change the world is very important.
Why We Love IC We both went on a trip to Africa in July 2010. We fell in love with the kids there and don’t approve of children being forced to serve in the war. Our church, Eastside, partners with Invisible Children for many activities.
Specific Programs Invisible Children Bracelet Campaign (ICBC) The ICBC aims to provide employment opportunities to vulnerable displacement camp residents by giving them the chance to earn a good income by making culturally unique bracelets. By selling the bracelets in the US, Invisible Children has been able to raise funds for it’s Legacy Scholarship Program and empower adults living in the camps. Legacy Scholarship Program (LSP) This program launched in 2005. It focuses on increasing access to post-primary education and providing mentoring from local leaders. The LSP is a program managed and operated entirely by Ugandan community leaders. The LSP provides scholarships for orphans, heads of households, abducted returnees, those living positively with HIV/AIDS and child mothers.
Inputs Our team is made up of many people that work together to explicatewhat is going on in Uganda, Africa. We obtain money from fundraisers that our staff put on, and from communities who donate to our organization. We fundraise so we can provide money to our specific programs and to the building of new schools in areas of need.
Process In 2003, three young filmmakers traveled to Africa in search of a story. What started out as a filmmaking adventure transformed into much more when these boys discovered tragedy that disgusted and inspired them. They created a film that has been viewed by millions around the world. We provide schooling. We tell the kids’ stories.
Outputs Millions of dollars have been raised by schools in the US. IC provides literacy trainers to 400 beneficiaries An estimated 900,000 have returned to their homes from the war.
Get Involved! Go to InvisibleChildren.com/frontline to see which way you would like to help! Host a party with your friends Donate money online Fundraise for the kids
Outcomes The children become literate members of society. The children are protected from going into war. The children are brought home from the war. The children get socialized again. Children receive a qualitative education.
Foundation vs. Organization The Thinking Foundation You find education important and build schools in Ethiopia to ensure that kids are being educated. You provide workshops for educators to further develop their leadership skills. Invisible Children We also think that education is important and therefore raise money to improve current schools and provide scholarships and mentoring to students in need. We also want to develop the leadership skills of our promising students to ensure that they can teach others what they have learned.
Foundation vs. Organizationcont… Foundation You support research that is investigating and facilitating change in public schools with the greatest academic need. You provide small or large grants to individual teachers based on a criteria for advancing research for the purpose of significantly improving teaching, leadership and learning. Invisible Children Because education is important, we also conduct research on how many kids need proper education and the number of kids who do not have it. We send fresh college graduates to Northern Uganda to teach children and enhance their reading and writing.
How this links to Critical Thinking We have to organize all of our donations to ensure that the money is being allotted properly. By filming and creating documentaries, we have to gather and to analyzethe data that we receive. We want America to apply all that they have seen in our documentaries to their lives. How this links to Critical Action We want the youth to change the world. We have to make decisions on ways we can improve our fundraising.
Need in the Community Our Community Through our websites and facebook/twitter pages, we help raise awareness of the child soldiers in Uganda. We help people stay appreciative of what they have and all that they are blessed with. Third World Community Rehabilitation centers would be beneficial to kids once they escape from the LRA. We aggrandize emotional support from other countries to inform them that they are being heard.
