Cultural asset mapping is a process of collecting, recording, analyzing, and synthesizing information about the cultural resources, networks, and patterns of usage within a community. The presentation discusses conducting a cultural asset mapping project in Niagara to better understand the local cultural sector. Information would be gathered about cultural facilities, organizations, festivals, sites, collections, and human resources to create an inventory of cultural assets.

- Thank you very much. Assets. A term we use to describe something or someone of value. If you come from an arts background – which I do – it is not particularly natural to think of artists, cultural activity, and heritage buildings and features as “things” – but first and foremost asset mapping is about counting. In a municipal system we are quite used to the practice of counting. In St. Catharines we catalogue every single City-owned tree, and being the Garden City, we have thousands of trees listed in this system, and multiple staff managing that list – and those trees are in a virtual sea of municipal assets. In the municipal sector we tend to look at those assets and that system as a means of managing problems and balance sheets. Cultural asset mapping offers something a little different. It offers an opportunity.
