Lifelong Learning in Cardiology
Education and lifelong learning are core to the European Society of Cardiology
(ESC). Supporting training in cardiology and Continuing Medical Education are
commitments essential to the ESC Mission: “to reduce the burden of cardiovascular
disease in Europe”.
This brochure consolidates the activities of the ESC with its Constituent Bodies
(National Societies and the ESC Specialty Centre) in order to guide you through
your Lifelong Learning, Continuing Medical Education (CME), Continuing
Professional Development (CPD) and Research needs.
Although the most traditional means of delivering CME activities remains live events
(congresses & meetings), the ESC is reaching out more and more to its members’
requirements and focusing on distance learning as an increasingly convenient
vehicle for CME and CPD.
All ESC educational activities, from publications to congresses, are structured
around and mapped out on curricula (ESC Core Curriculum for general
cardiology and Specialty Centre Curricula), hence ensuring sound education and
transfer of knowledge. Increasingly, ESC Educational activities involve knowledge
based assessment. This is becoming ever more systematic with distance learning
products, and ultimately with the growing Certification activities of the ESC
Specialty Centre.
The Specialty Centre of the European Society of Cardiology is a world
reference Knowledge Centre in Cardiology. The knowledge, training and
expertise its members have gained via the ESC educational programmes are
recognised and certified, consequently bringing about and promoting excellence in
Cardiology in Europe and worldwide.
Finally, the ESC is, and always has been, an advocate and supporter of research.
Therefore, this guide will also provide you information on the variety of Research
and Training Grants the ESC and their Constituent Bodies offer each year.

3. All ESC educational programmes are, where appropriate, submitted to the EBAC
for CME/CPD accreditation. EBAC works in accordance with standard procedures
established by the UEMS-EACCME.
Continuing Medical Education in Europe - Did you know?
• A CME credit is a unit of time that a physician spends attending a CME activity
(1 CME = 1 hour in most cases)
• Collection of CME Credits is mandatory for Physicians in many European
Countries (Austria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece,
Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia,
Switzerland, United Kingdom).
• CME Credits can be collected for participation in live events, web courses,
articles and CD-ROMs.
• Physicians can collect CME Credits at the National and European level.
• European CME Credits collected by American citizens can be converted
to AMA Pra Category 1 Credit.

28. ESC Grants
ESC Grants, ESC Specialty Centre Grants & Fellowships
The European Society of Cardiology has developed a range of grants to help young professionals in the
field of cardiology access quality training or research activities throughout Europe.
ESC Atherothrombosis Research Grants:
This grant was aimed at European cardiologists under 36 years of age who wished to undertake original basic
or applied/clinical research in the area of atherothrombotic diseases in a European centre of excellence for
a maximum period of one year. Secondary research projects such as meta-analysis projects were excluded.
ESC Research Grants:
A category of grants awarded to medical graduates at any stage in their career but before obtaining a
“permanent“, “senior staff“ or “consultant“ post, or for science graduates with research experience up to
Junior Investigator, Lecturer, Assistant Professorship or equivalent level, whose work has been, or is, related
to cardiovascular research.
ESC Training Grants:
A category of grants awarded to young cardiologists (aged < 36 years) who wish to update their clinical
training with modern cardiological methods, especially when it is impossible to learn particular techniques
in their own country.
ESC Specialty Centre Grants & Fellowship
Council on Cardiovascular Basic Science
Outstanding Achievement Awards
2 awards per year and an honorary plaque. The awards honor basic scientists with outstanding
accomplishments in their early career.
First Contact Initiative Grant for young researchers to establish contacts in top institutions in their field. Two
calls per year for grants.
Council on Cardiovascular Nursing and Allied Professions
Nursing / Allied Professional Investigator Award for PhD prepared nursing professionals in the
cardiovascular field. The award includes a monetary prize and an honorary plaque for the winner. The
other finalists receive also monetary prize.
Post-doctoral grants for mentoring
These grants are proposed to PhD students or new researchers to benefit from mentoring by experienced
nursing professionals.

29. EAE – Echocardiography research Grant
ESC Grants, ESC Specialty Centre Grants & Fellowships
ESC Grants, ESC Specialty Centre Grants & Fellowships
The European Association of Echocardiography (EAE) offers a research Grant programme to help young
doctors to obtain research experience in a high standard academic centre in an ESC member country.
Application deadline: 30 September 2011
EAPCI Grants in interventional cardiology
The EAPCI grants provide an opportunity to medical graduates (under 36) having completed the major
part of their cardiology training but before obtaining a “permanent”, “senior staff” or “consultant“ position
for clinical training in the field of interventional cardiology in an ESC Member country other than their
own. This programme can be considered as a valorisation of the geographical mobility as well as cultural
exchanges and professional practice in the field of cardiology.
Deadline for application: 15 January 2012
EHRA training fellowship programmes
Unique programme for both, where centres and individuals are invited to apply
• 2 Sub-specialities available:
- Clinical Electrophysiology with emphasis on catheter ablation (one or two year programme)
- Arrhythmias and Cardiac Pacing with emphasis on ICD/CRT (one year programme)
Application opens on: 15 September 2011
Deadline: 15 December 2011
HFA – Research Fellowship & Nurse Training Fellowship
The objective of HFA’s fellowship programme is to offer career enhancement and international experience
and at the same time, to encourage advances in the field of heart failure medicine. Generally, winners are
required to work in a different country and attend HFA Congress with a monetary grant.
