Children’s Hospital.
We are always looking for qualified, motivated students who will take advantage of all the
benefits of the internship program. To apply, review the following information and

2. Internship?
Child LifeWhat is the
Children’s Hospital offers a 14-week internship program directed by Child Life Specialists. The intensive nature
of the program will allow students to gain practical, concentrated experience on an undergraduate or graduate
level. Our goal is to develop competent Child Life professionals as stated by the Child Life Council guidelines.
Length of the program: 560 hours over 14 weeks
Prerequisites
• Undergraduate or graduate student
• Completed practicum experiences with children
• Completed core curriculum with approval by the Child Life Council
• Grade point average of 3.0 in major and 2.5 overall
Objectives of the program
• To demonstrate understanding of the role of a Child Life Specialist
• To begin the transition from student to professional
• To develop leadership skills
• To gain exposure to basic knowledge of the organization and administration of a Child Life program
• To develop a professional attitude, growth, maturity and judgment

3. The intern experience
Children’s Hospital Child Life interns will:
• Assist in the assessment of patient needs in terms of Child Life.
• Establish and maintain positive relationships with patients and families.
• Assist staff in helping children and their families adjust to the hospital setting and in preparation for
procedures and surgery.
• Plan and implement play activities for patients in the playroom and at the bedside.
• Accept requests for services from staff and discuss these requests with the Child Life Specialist.
• Assist with special events.
• Attend meetings, in-services and workshops.
• Observe and document the behavior of patients.
• Keep daily census forms and statistical information.
• View videos and read journal articles related to children and health care.
• Assist in supervising volunteers.
• Assist in organizing and maintaining playrooms to ensure that equipment is safe and clean.
• Prepare and present a project to Child Life staff.
• Participate in community education events.
• Be evaluated throughout the internship period.
• Complete other duties as assigned.
