manicured lawns and numerous buildings and museums of significant
historical importance. Built almost entirely in the Early English
Gothic architectural style it has the tallest spire of any of Britain’s
Cathedrals at 404ft. Enter the beautiful and serene Cathedral and
discover nearly 800 years of remarkable history including the oldest
working European clock dated 1386 and the finest example of a
preserved Magna Carta document from 1215.
New Forest
5. The “New Forest” is one of England’s most ancient wooded areas and
is the latest “National Park“to be created. It is easily reached within
30 minutes from Bournemouth where you will find an abundance of
pretty villages and small towns to explore. Often used by William the
Conqueror from 1079 as his favourite playground many of its
original tranquil walks, open spaces and delightful forest glades have
remained unchanged since those days. The royal manor constructed at
Lyndhurst soon became the principal place to be seen at with Kings,
Queens and all things royal regularly coming here.
Beaulieu
6. Resting peacefully of the bank of the River Beaulieu is the chocolate
box historic village of Beaulieu which has enchanted visitors for
many centuries. In 1204 King John gave the area to the “Cistercian
Monks” its original name was “Bellus Locus” which translated means
“Beautiful Place” and today it certainly lives up to its early namesake.
It is believed that a short distance away along the river that King
Rufus was slain by an arrow in 1100AD.
Christchurch, Dorset
7. Christchurch is a wonderful place to visit so full of character and
charm and rich with culture and heritage. There is a stunning 11th
Century Priory, a castle, two rivers and a mill dating back to Saxon
times. Christchurch Quayis a great place for riverside walks with
beautiful views across the harbour. It is in a unique location close to
both the peaceful “New Forest National Park” and the impressive
“Dorset World Heritage Coast”. It has a fantastic mix of beautiful
countryside and coastline, terrific heritage and captivating history all
combining to make your visit or stay a memorable one. The towns
award winning floral exhibitions during the summer months add to
the unique character and charm of this beautiful town.
Christchurch Priory
8. What a fascinating place to visit, this medieval monastic church you
see today is little changed since the time when King Henry
VIIIdecreed the church to the population of Christchurch to be used
as their Parish Church. History shows us that there has been a church
on the same site since approximately 800 AD. The present
construction was begun by RanulfFlambard in 1094 and has been in
uninterrupted use as a place of pilgrimage and worship ever since. At
just over 311 feet long it is the longest Parish Church in all of
England and is a fabulous and impressive place to visit whilst in
Christchurch.
