city of St. Petersburg, on the banks of the river Neva.

5. MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE MUSEUM
Is one of the largest and oldest museums in the world.
. The museum has been continuously open to the public since 1852, and visitors from all
over the world can enjoy the part of the collection which is on permanent display.
Hermitage museum was founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great, under the supervision of
the French architect Wallen de la Mont.
It has since housed a major collection of 225 Western European paintings and generally
speaking a treasure of over 3 million paintings by well – known artists.

from different periods and places.
More specifically, visitors can admire exhibits from Greece, exhibits from the ancient and byzantine period.
We can find treasures of the mature classical period and roman masterpieces influenced by the black sea
civilization and the ancient Byzantium.

B MODULE; GREEKS AND SCYTHIANS IN THE NORTHERN BYZEINIA REGION. THIS
EXHIBITION INCLUDES SCULPTURES, JEWELLERY, COINS, ARTIFACTS OF HERSON DURING
THE MIDDLE AGES, COINS OF MEDIEVAL HERSON.

The hermitage museum provides four galleries with thematic sections
concerning Greece.
16. FIRST SECTION;
o“Art monuments of ancient Greece”. Includes Greek vases with written
decoration and ancient Greek coins.
SECOND SECTION;
o“ Greek of the time”. Includes sculptures ,jewelry ,currency .
THIRD SECTION;
o“Art of Cyprus”. Monuments of ancient art of Cyprus and coins of Ancient
Cyprus.
FOURTH SECTION;
o“Byzantine art”. History of coin collection and hagiographies.
17. APHRODITE OF TAURIDA
oThe most impressive Greek exhibit is
APHRODITE OF TAURIDA. It was
constructed between the 2nd and the
3rd century b.C.
19. •There have been cats in the
Hermitage ever since the days of the
Elizabeth Petrovna.
•The reveal of rats in the palace
made the empress to order the cats
to be brought from Kazan, in order
to get rid of the rodents.
20. CATS : THE RESIDENT VERMIN DESTROYERS
oThe cats stayed at the palace even when it became
a museum, in 1764 , to protect the exhibits from the
rats.
oSo they have been continuously living in the
tremendous building’s underbelly for over 250
years .
oOnly after the world war 2 the cat population was
killed. But after a decade they were replaced by a
new group of cats.
21. A NEW START
o The start of the 21st century
made a revolution in the lifes of
the cute felines of the museum.
o 2007; people started adopting
the cats of the museum.
o 2009; the annual day of
Hermitage cats was finally
established.
22. o Today Hermitage houses 74 cats in its
foundations.
o There are three volunteers who take
care of the cats six hours per day.
o There are also kitchens where their
food is prepared as well as a small
hospital.
