2. Christmas is a religious holiday. It’s celebrated on
the 25-th of December. On this day British people
celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. This holiday
means the beginning of the new year and the new
life.
3. In churches people sing Christmas songs, Christmas
carols. Sometimes groups of people walk along the
streets and sing carols at the doors of the houses.
On Christmas Eve (24 December), some people go
to a special church service is called, midnight mass,
which begins at 12 am
4. Santa Claus
Young children are told that Santa Claus will
bring-them presents if they are good. Before going to
bed on Christmas Eve the children hang stockings at
the back of their beds, for Santa Claus to put presents
in when he comes in the middle of the night through
the chimney.
5. Traditional foods
Christmas - a day when people are at home, open
their presents and eat together. The most important
meal of Christmas dinner is turkey with potatoes
and other vegetables, and Christmas pudding. Other
traditional foods include pies and Christmas cake -
small round cakes filled with a mixture of apples,
raisins and spices.
6. People decorate their homes lights, Christmas tree
and put the fireplace and decorated it with toys, lights
and sweets.
7. A wonderful tradition - to decorate the house for
Christmas evergreen sprigs of ivy, holly, etc. - has
been preserved to this day, as usually hung on the
front door sprigs of mistletoe white. Usually, once a
year, on Christmas Eve, men have the right to kiss any
girl who stopped by decoration of this plant.
